Upfront 063: Mixpak

BleeD's first release of 2016 comes from American techno heavyweight and label debutant, DJ Spider. The highly regarded New York scene vet serves up a typically harsh, potent EP – featuring a remix by label boss Volte-Face.

Burning Museums is a continuation of Spider's prophecies of complete societal collapse; it is said to “represent the loss of knowledge of mankind by the modern scientists who are destroying ancient texts in their attempt to erase history.” First up on the B-side and giving the EP the oomph you'd expect from such a description is "Divine Builders". Right from the beginning of the track you are hurtled into DJ Spider's unnerving world of anger and destruction. A seriously kicking beat, supernatural voices and transportive noisy based synths combine brilliantly, painting a picture of possessed scientists running riot in a museum – or something like that.

When premiering Volte-Face and Daniel Avery's "Rote 2" last year, we said "We’ll stop running these BleeDing premieres when they give us a reason to." No change there then.
 
Keep your ear close to the ground, Burning Museums is dropping on BleeD later this month.

"In homage to the musical diversity at Dimensions 2016, we’ve embarked on an hour-long exploration of melodies and grooves from around the world, from Libya to Malta, Kenya to Trinidad & Tobago, and much closer to home. There’s also a few odes to the Dimensions lineup in there too, with a 7” from Kai Alcé and remix from Joe Claussel. Es war Nacht und die kleine Haselmaus war sehr sehr schläfrig. Die ganze Nacht war sie auf Futtersuche, und nun wollte sie endlich schlafen. Aber wie sollte sie einschlafen, wenn die Vögel einen solchen Krach machten? "Ruhe!" schrie die Haselmaus, doch niemand kümmerte sich darum. Zuerst war sie ärgerlich, dann wurde sie echt wütend. "Ich werde mich beim großen Waldgeist beklagen!" drohte sie. Bald darauf stand sie auch schon vor dem Herrn des Waldes und klagte: "Großer Herr, ich bin ein Nachttier und muss mich am Tage ausruhen und schlafen. Könntest du meinen Nachbarn nicht befehlen ruhig zu sein?" "Haselmaus", sagte der Herr, "ich behandle alle Tiere gleich. Du beklagst dich über die Vögel. Hast du schon mal daran gedacht, dass es sie auch stören könnte, wenn du nachts pfeifst oder piepst? Oder wenn die Eule schreit und der Dachs schnaubt?" Nein, daran hatte die kleine Haselmaus noch nie gedacht. Sie ließ den Kopf hängen. Da spielte der Waldgeist auf seiner Flöte und webte um die Haselmaus einen Zauberwall... Später konnte sie sich nicht mehr daran erinnern, wie sie nach Hause gekommen und eingeschlafen war. Aber die Musik hatte sie noch lange in den Ohren.
