SYSTEM | Mix Series

There is nothing safe about @dis_fig. The Berlin-based artist makes confrontational, unconventional music that harnesses the power of chaos. She initially came up on the New York club scene but was always most interested in the weirder end of the spectrum so moved to Berlin. It is there that she has established herself as someone who operates on the fringes of the dance floor. Her debut album PURGE in 2019 was wrought with emotional turmoil thanks to her own unique vocal work, while the electronics were just as twisted and harrowing. Last year she showed another side to her vocal skills on In Blue, a collaborative album of bass-heavy dreamscapes with The Bug.

This week's mix is 90 minutes of fulsome body music, contorting rhythms and exaggerated percussion. The boundaries between club, techno, jungle, rap and bass are blurred as Dis Fig plots a route through them all with great control. Even when tempos jump around wildly, there is no break in the flow, and to end such a high octane ride on the sultry mind nineties r&b of Total is a stroke of genius.

The latest Unsound Podcast is a mix made by LCY, released on the day they play at the Unsound 2021 opening party in 89 tonight. LCY's mix references UK club music's past, yet also drives forward into the future, in the way that it fluidly weaves together experimentation and their percussive sound. They say of their mix: 'This mix was a bit of a focus on breaks. I’ve found that when I’m anticipating something all I want to listen to is drums rhythms and textures and not much melody at all ~ the hour acts as a warm up to my set for unsound tonight infused with uk club sounds and should make you feel ready to go and dance'.

Crack Mix 447: TSVI & Loraine James

Manchester’s BFTT brings his serendipitous club moments to the Untitled 909 mix series, describing his contribution as a ‘Best Of Compilation of some big blend moments that have happened during recent sets.’ 

Including unreleased tracks from himself, YCO Cru, Henzo and ‘internet friends’, BFTT’s mix excels in building pace, slowly chugging along via the percussive rhythms of Le Motel, Toma Kami, and Mistareez before an Amerie moment flips the switch. From then on, it’s go big or go home! 

Earlier this year, BFTT released his most reflective work to date on TT, a seven-track album titled ‘Redefines’, that was four years in the making. The album followed on from previous EPs on AD 93, All Centre, Mutualism and YCO - the label he co-runs with aya.

The Fusion Mes Couilles residents delivered three hours of a fuckin mental hammering of everything "ball breaking": hardcore, acid, techno, ghetto tech, trap, jungle and everything inbetween. Mean and fringe burning; people were pulling themselves up the the stairs, out the dungeon, needing a break, having no idea what just hit 'em!

Here is the final 1.5h of what was a really special set. Needless to say, you can hear everyone present, well and truly got loose.
