Aaron Martin & Christoph Berg’s split called “Day Has Ended” is a piece of quiet, intimate music, interfused with daylight and covered by a soft mist of evening dreams. This album spans the course of a day until the point where night falls.

The first part, created by Aaron Martin, is a water-colour, cool and delicate. The twinkling sun reflected itself in a slow river, transparent silvery clouds sparkle and brush the heads of drowsy trees. The closer to the middle of the album, the lower goes the gentle shadow, saturating. In the second part - Christoph Berg’s one, water-colour turns into gouache. The sound becomes more full, more sensuous, it comes in waves, like breath of a sleeping man.

Just close your eyes, be all ears and you’ll feel – the night is not silent. Sweet tune of twilight and darkness full of echo, humming blue, vague voice of the strings and clear gleaming of bright stars in a velvet sky – that is the night.

It’s a perfect and severely sincere work, slightly bittered with melancholy.

Aaron Martin is a very talented multi-instrumentalist from Topeka, Kansas who has releases on such labels as Experimedia, Preservation, Under The Spire, Sonic Meditations.

Christoph Berg is composer and sound artist currently living and working in Berlin focusing on fragile acoustic chamber music compositions. Also writes electro-acoustic music as Field Rotation. He has releases on Facture, hibernate, Denovali Records, Fluid Audio.

When I woke up this morning I was feeling particularly inspired to create. I wasn't really relishing the idea of being up just yet so after I opened up a window I climbed back into bed and attempted to watch Lost in Translation. During the course of the next hour, I sat there and felt the cool breeze and listened to the birds making their presence known. I decided to do something creative with all of this sound I was currently ingesting.

What followed was me setting up my field recording device and recording a few minutes of the general ambiance. I then set about to record individual sounds incorporating whatever I happened to have on my porch: a few pine cones that fell recently, I handful of leaves and other tree debris from the wind, my barbeque and a broom.

I decided to make a track as quickly as I could, incorporating the sounds from the morning. I sampled the movie, I recorded my voice, I chopped up and edited some of the recordings I made in Sound Forge and quickly opened Ableton to get to work.

What you're about to hear is what I created. More or less in about 3 hours. I tried to limit the number of VST's used, with no significant editing and none of the destructive methods I typically take with my work after the fact. All of the drum and percussive sounds included in this were made this morning from what I recorded. There's a link to pay what you like via my bandcamp page where you'll get this track as well as a drum kit (individual wavs for each sound) full of the noises I recorded as an added bonus alongside this track. I've not released a new mix for a long time because I've been busy working on a new album (which you can hear soon), and the Emergence live show, which is coming in a new form for next year.

Few things provoke the imagination more than an unsolved mystery. When no reasonable explanation can be given, our mind becomes more creative, hypothesizing and searching for plausible answers. There is pleasure to be found in this search, if we dispense with the idea that everything should be understood. Exploring the unknown has been a theme running through the Monte Verità series, not for the purpose of greater understanding, but to feel this sense of excitement through curiosity.
