A unique type of breakthrough act delivers this week's mix.

Marquis Hawkes debuted in 2012, releasing a trio of EPs on Glasgow's Dixon Avenue Basement Jams label. Drawing from classic Chicago house, with a no frills approach to production that made him the perfect fit for the label (whose motto is "real rockin' raw shit from the street for the clubs"), the EPs made him an instant one-to-watch in house and techno. 2014 was Hawkes' most productive year yet: as well as another record on Dixon Avenue, he delivered records for European labels that fit his approach (Clone Jack for Daze, Creme Organisation) and inked a deal with Houndstooth, who released his Fifty Fathoms Deep EP.

Hawkes is no kid, however (if you didn't gather that from the illustration above): a British ex pat in Berlin, he was making music for 15 years before finding success as Marqius, and his FACT mix draws from two decades of buying and making dance records. DBX, Kerri Chandler, Armando and Roy Davis Jr are all included, while there's also an airing for newer, but still classic-sounding house from Leon Vynehall and Delroy Edwards.

ItaloJohnson operate a zero bullshit policy. An uncomplicated musical vision that rests on preserving intimacy, sociality and space in the club, the faceless trio have been making a name for themselves since 2010 with a series of hand-stamped 12” releases showcasing their timeless house sound.

The collective expanded on their no-frills musical vision in our recent feature with them. Off key fondue parties and records "handstamped by virgins" aside, guiding the three is an underlying imperative to make decisions for the right reasons: their anonymity nothing more than a method that works well for them, something that relies on a sociality that the internet has effectively negated over the years. Back at our mammoth Stay True Scotland broadcast earlier this month, one track came real close to bringing The Caves' roof down during Nina Kraviz's powerhouse headline set. "I Wanna Go Bang" very nearly executed its titular statement – well, if the song was more about wrecking balls and less about...oh, never mind.

The vocals that stalk the track, so wholly devoid of humanity, rub up against razor-sharp claps and serious bounce in the subs. It's weighty warehouse techno of the highest order, set to devastate dark basements and big tents alike throughout the year. Simply put: Icelandic producer Bjarki has delivered a bomb.
