Here is Modern Amusement Podcast 03...I was enjoying a caipirinha in my hotel room on my last night in Sao Paulo this weekend, when I heard a rapid metallic knock at the door…   Thinking it was an errant room service, when I opened the door and saw nothing I was shocked…

Until I heard a series of bleeps and tones and a shiver coming from the ground and looked down.  I was surprised to see b6 the backwards motion robot again.  He was shivering and cold to the touch and his outstretched claw held a disc labeled “Lee Foss – Modern Amusement Podcast 03”   below was a a message from a future me that this was a recording of an old school house set from the early 2000's played at the 2088 Neptune Ball.  While excited to see more evidence that in the future both time travel and planetary colonies are possible I was disappointed that once again there was no tracklisting on the disc.

Joe Ashworth works hard and fast, and because of this, his bio is usually out of date. He spends his days producing and engineering, whilst creating sound art and scoring music for film. From meticulously crafting milliseconds of audio, to playing marathon DJ sets in clubs across Europe and beyond, it is this variety of experiences and stimuli that enriches his work.

Making the decision in 2012 to record and DJ under the name 'Ashworth' gave Joe a chance to really consider how he wants to develop, and a few years of relentless music-making has resulted in a sound that has the gritty honesty of techno, with an experimental and melodic edge to feed the geek inside of him.

2013 saw the start of Ashworth's rise to becoming a prolific new name in electronic music, with his first two releases gaining support from Dixon and Maya Jane Coles. Following this, Ashworth released a collaboration EP with Citizen, one of the biggest rising stars in house music, on Waze and Odyssey's Street Tracks imprint, championed by Pete Tong BBC Radio 1.

Another collaboration, this time with Kiwi, climbed well inside juno's top 10 download chart, followed by an 8/10 mixmag-reviewed exploration of Ashworth's darker sound on Arkhive London, championed by Mano Le Tough amongst others.

Joe's hard work has been definitely been paying off, with releases on, NeedWant, Holic Trax, Little Helpers and Anjunadeep amongst others, and a number of carefully selected remixes.

In summer 2015, Ashworth solidified his musical vision with a full LP on NeedWant, receiving excellent reviews (9/10 DJ mag, Mixmag album of the week). With Ashworth's identity firmly stamped on the electronic music scene, Ashworth appears to be just getting started!

Earlier this month Elyte and Cnyce’s interstellar Soul Clap ship descended on Jæger with the full force of Sun Ra’s most cosmic determination. Holled up in our basement the entire night, they brought the might of a Bootsy Collins platform down on Oslo, with their Funk-determined vision of an electronic future narrated by Mad Max.
Captivating and energetic, their set skated through dance music from the 70’s to the present on a celestial trajectory where no man has ventured before, their destination set to mark the release of their latest- and second album, “Soul Clap”. Like “EFUNK” before it this latest album is a highly intoxicating punchbowl of musical influences concocted from the group’s most primal experiences on the dance floor, distilled for your most hedonistic listening pleasures.
Tracing a line from their Funk roots, with syncopated, bouncing live drums, oozing cool bass-lines, and vocals that call out at you from some foggy hazy corned of a dance floor like a siren song, Soul Clap is undeniably a soul Clap album from cover to cover, while at the same time plotting perhaps a new orbit for the Soul Clap ship.

A duo that needs no introduction, Matthias Reiling and Hauke Freer, both great producers in their own right, are even better together as two man house band @SessionVictim. The Hamburg and Berlin-based best friends have been making music together for about a decade but have known each other for the past twenty years.

Notorious sample diggers, the two are able to craft brand new musicals gems with ideas stemming from cratefuls of records which include genres such as soul, funk, disco, jazz & various others. Locking themselves in the studio for days at a time, they are able to consistently come up with infectious dancefloor groovers. With all of that time spent digging for records, it's no wonder that they are phenomenal behind the decks as well, bringing an unparalleled, contagious vibe with them wherever they go.

With two widely successful albums under their belt, Matthias and Hauke have been hard at work on their anticipated third LP. If you've caught them live at any point this year then you have likely heard snippets of what's to come. For the time being though, we're glad to settle for their current Matching Half EP out on Delusions of Grandeur as well as their upcoming solo contributions on XK Records.

For the 2nd instalment of the mix series which focuses on those “sunday energy vibes” with UKG - we have a takeover from one of our favourite labels. Their Bandcamp description describes their direction perfectly - “Creativity without order. A platform for music with no signature sound - for the lovers and the listeners.” Their output since they started just shows their versatility of the label itself with a wide range of sounds from jazz to house to breakbeat. You name it.

It’s the first time i’ve contributed to a UKG channel so it was a pleasure putting together some favourites, some unreleased bits from friends, and a few shameless bangers from Mike Millrain just for good measure. Here’s my sunday dim sum recipe, had a lot of fun recording it and it came together in the first take so that’s always nice. Strictly steppers and blastoise. much love, ell x

Stepping up for NorthSouth podcast number 5 is the brain behind Banoffee Pies Records - Ell, aka DJ Autumn. DJ Food - A Magpies, Maps & Moons Reader

DJ Autumn (@autumn-bpr) plays various pivotal roles in the UK dance music scene. Firstly, he is label manager at Banoffee Pies Records. It's a buy on sight imprint and network of various sub-labels such as Otaku, Beats, Limited Series and the ambient Sonder Series that plots an always tasteful path between broken beat, garage and minimal clubs sounds from cutting edge artists. Those sounds also characterise his own DJ sets and radio shows everywhere from Worldwide FM to NTS to the BBC. From high tempo intensity to tripped out atmospherics,  he's an ever present vibesman who also founded his own Headroom Festival in 2019.

His mix for us this week is a stripped back and dubbed out winter warmer. Always oozing a sense of cool and control, it builds through the most cavernous of bass spaces and icy sci-fi sonics towards a skeletal jungle workout that gets you on your toes. The sounds are always rich and soulful so pull you deep into a comforting musical world. And we can all make time for that right now.
