ד"ר מרטין לותר קינג הבן היה אמריקאי שלחם לזכויות האדם של השחורים בארצות הברית. קינג גם זכה בפרס נובל לשלום על המחאה שלו, שדגלה באי-אלימות. הוא החל את דרכו בפעילות לזכויות אדם כשארגן חרם אוטובוסים והיה הנשיא הראשון של ארגון זכויות האדם בארה"ב, שדגל בשוויון בין שחורים ללבנים. הוא ארגן ועמד בראש פעולות המחאה הלא-אלימות ששיאן היה במצעד שערכו לעיר וושינגטון, מצעד למען תעסוקה וחירות. בסיום המצעד נשא קינג את נאומו המפורסם "יש לי חלום", שדיבר על חזון לעתיד טוב יותר. נאום זה נחשב אחד הנאומים החשובים והמשמעותיים בתולדות ארה"ב.

בהמשך פעילותו הציבורית ועד שנרצח, עסק מרטין לותר קינג גם בפעילות מחאה נגד העוני ונגד מלחמת וייטנאם, שני נושאים חשובים וקשים באמריקה של שנות ה-60.

מרטין לותר קינג נרצח על ידי מתנקש כשביקר בעיר ממפיס, כדי לתמוך במאבקם של פועלי הזבל השחורים, להשוואת שכרם לזה של הלבנים שעבדו באותה העבודה. על שמו קבעו וחוגגים בארה"ב את החג הלאומי "יום מרטין לותר קינג".
