Disquiet Junto Project 0613: Test Drive

At SPILL Festival's Think Tank in February, 14 of us co-created an audio visual collage using the letters and poetry of Edward Fitzgerald (audio version here: https://soundcloud.com/leonclowes/something-of-a-queer-nature). This opened Jan Pulsford's Woodbridge Ambient Music Festival 2023 (https://woodbridgeambientmusicfestival.net/) on Friday.

Never one to let any scraps of sound materials go to waste (you should see the hoarding on my Google Drive), I took tiny fragments of sounds we recorded at SPILL (including the recorder playing by @kate-gallaher) and made this piece this week. I'm really rather pleased with it. Clever little thing, Logic Pro X. I call mine Larry: what do you call yours?

This is my response to this week's @naviar-records haiku challenge. Such an encouraging and kind community that Marcus puts a great deal of time and love into, and it really shows. I'm so grateful to have these weekly email prompts, listening back I'm so pleased with what I've taught myself and learned from others.

Janice Doppler spent her writing energy on grant proposals and curriculum development during her career as a teacher and school administrator. Retiring enabled her to develop her creative self—carving realistic birds from wood and nature journaling.

Her heart was captured by haiku during a senior-center workshop that she attended on a whim. Her haiku and haibun have been widely published. Step 1: Pick a single percussion instrument.

Step 2: Record between 4 and 12 different short examples (roughly 20 to 60 seconds each) of playing that instrument. Imagine that each recording is by a different musician exercising a different aspect of the instrument. Make no deliberate attempt to match key or tempo or sonic quality between them.

Step 3: Imagine moving through space over the course of time, and encountering the sounds — overlapping somewhat — as you proceed. Arrange the recordings over the course of a track so that at least one and at most five of the examples are audible at any one time. To further the spatial movement, each could fade in at the beginning and fade out. They might, as well, move from position to position within the stereo field.

Step 4: If you wish, consider adding a noise bed underneath the entire piece to sew all of the pieces together, to provide a sense of the space one is moving through.

Eight Important Steps When Your Track Is Done:

Step 1: Include “disquiet0612” (no spaces or quotation marks) in the name of your tracks.

Step 2: If your audio-hosting platform allows for tags, be sure to also include the project tag “disquiet0612” (no spaces or quotation marks). If you’re posting on SoundCloud in particular, this is essential to subsequent location of tracks for the creation of a project playlist.

Step 3: Upload your tracks. It is helpful but not essential that you use SoundCloud to host your tracks.

Tin drum ( DIY drum sample maker ) - disquiet0612

Something I've been meaning to do is explore the (electric) upright bass, which has hardly been used over the years it's been in the house. A disquiet YouTube video is also well overdue and I have also been meaning to experiment with a bottleneck on bass ... So, this is a triple whammy of stuff I've been wanting to get around to ...

Disquiet Junto Project 0613: Test Drive
The Assignment: Do something you’ve been meaning to do.

A few weeks ago, a friend was having really bad pneumothorax problems and sent me a short video on how to use something called a triple-ball breath-training device. Despite the negative circumstances (and the friend is doing better now), I liked the sound of the video clip (a single breath followed by three clicks and a release) tremendously and have been trying to use the sample for weeks. I've certainly got a handful of unfinished tracks with that sample .... but none finished yet. Today I started fresh and loaded the sample into ye good ol Fieldscaper - and liked the result. I did some post-processing on the two instances of the sample in Reaper. The track is now completely based on the sound of the mentioned sample. Have fun with it.

I decided to test drive Enso Looper, which I bought a while ago but never properly used. So as in a proper test drive, I (briefly) consulted the manual, took the wheel, hit the gas pedal (record) and went for it. No change of course or second takes allowed. After this test drive I still don’t properly understand how Enso should be used - but something came out of it. Next step (maybe): read the manual again.

Disquiet0613 - Singular Brushstroke

Been meaning to get around to posting something to a Disquiet Junto, and since this Junto is about finally getting around to something this seemed like a good time to jump in.

Musically the idea is to do music for meditators, similar to the sound bath genre. Sound Bath music usually uses sounds associated with Buddhism, like gongs and bells from Tibet. I find those instruments a little corny, appropriated, exoticist. My background is americana and folk. That's what I can play in an authentic way. So the main instruments here are from bluegrass - an old Gibson mandolin and a National steel guitar. In addition to those I'm playing a synthesizer, an Arturia Microfreak, using a bell sound that recalls traditional sound bath influences. All of these sounds are passing through a Microcosm pedal, which adds some classic ambient flavors like delay, glitching, and heavy reverb. The song that this is all based on is a fiddle tune called "The Black Water Fall."

Given all that is going on in the world at the moment, I thought "anxiety" would be a good word to choose for the first half of the track. Of the many words conveying the same thing, I chose "botheration," mainly because I liked the sound of it, but also because it also captures the annoying aspects of our current time. So, "botheration" takes over at about the half way mark. As for process, I began with a nervous and somewhat chaotic drum sequence and then augmented that with a  few mournful strums from the Terra and then fired up my Landscape Stereofield for a bit of noise. Halfway through the drum beats give way to some darkness, again thanks to the Terra and ends with a flourish of pure noise.

My 33 1/3 series book about the Aphex Twin album <i>Selected Ambient Works Volume II</i> was published in 2014. The book was one of the top 5 bestselling titles for the calendar year, and in 2015 was ranked by Pitchfork as one of the "33 best" of the 100-plus books in the 33 1/3 series. It has subsequently been translated into Japanese (2019) and Spanish (2018)

I've exhibited sound art at galleries in Los Angeles (Crewest), Manhattan (apex art), and Dubai (DUTAC), and I had a audio-visual installation at the San Jose Museum of Art as part of its 45th anniversary.
