The Host Tale

The concept behind the joint-venture consisting of d.b.h and the two turntable wizards Chrisfader and Testa is quite simple: Take a specific genre of music, sample and flip it into danceable beats. 

In the case of their second EP "Dabkeh", named after a popular Mediterranean form of line-dancing, the subject of the musical explorations is the Arab world. The three guys from RLS spent quite some time mining old vinyl or cassettes to create the tracks on this EP, in the hopes of getting some wild Dabkeh moves started on dancefloors worldwide!

This is a 66 minute audio essay on The Travelling Archive, an archive of field recordings from Bengal, written and presented by singer and writer Moushumi Bhowmik. The essay was written for presentation on Baba Betar, an internet radio, that partnered Chobi Mela International Festival of Photography 2021 and was hosted by Arfun Ahmed. The theme of the festival was Shunyo, which could mean both zero, emptiness or the point from which to start all over again.

In this essay, Moushumi remembers people and places by listening to voices from past and continuing journeys within and around Bengal. Bengal is both a physical space and a space of the mind in this story. Wistfully told, it draws the listener into a very personal field of listening by weaving song with sound and sound with silence. Moushumi sits in her room in Kolkata, and as she talks, recording herself, the night moves towards dawn. Dogs bark, the last trains pass through the station, a plane goes swimming in the sky, people call out, they open and shut doors and windows, while slowly in the dark a map unfurls.

This soundtrack has been mixed by Sabyasachi Pal.

As a composer one of the most rewarding activities is teaching people about soundscape composition. In my workshops participants learn about the soundscape and take part in field recording and composition activities. These workshops bring a variety of people together all with an eagerness to learn something new while sharing their own creative experiences. Their own experiences of their sonic environment and connections to place offer the composer a fresh insight into a new place, such as Trafford, Manchester.

This piece is a celebration of cultural diversity, a showcase of creative ideas through the exploration of our sonic environment. The recordings gathered from these activities have been used to create a new soundscape, one in which is inspired by the creative explorations of the participants during the workshops.

I would like to thank all of the participants who attended the workshops and the staff at Seed Studios for making this happen. I would also like to thank Gemma Bass and Gary Farr for inviting me to collaborate with them on this project.

'Listening and not listening to voices: Interrogating the prejudicial foundations of the sound arts canon' is an peer reviewed audio paper first published by Seismograf (https://seismograf.org)in `November 2017. It was based on a keynote lecture given at 'Sound Art Matters', a conference held in Aarhus, Denmark in 2016.

Abstract
We live in sound, it is all around us. We are implicated in the social relationships and ideologies that we hear reflected back to us. Sound art offers the chance to critique the world that we hear, and to produce new and different possibilities. Are sound artists taking up the challenge of offering new ways of knowing or changing the world, and does this need new ways of listening and understanding? Can sound art act as a tool for radical change by ‘de-conditioning’ our listening and helping us cross linguistic, cultural, geographic, ethnic, gendered, specied and sexual prejudicial borders? This audio paper will consider how new listenings might lead to a richer, more inclusive sound art, that can embrace and celebrate difference.
