An interview with Dr. Shriya Patnaik by Prof. Nicole Bourbonnais, Associate Professor of International History & Politics and Co-director of the Gender Centre at the Geneva Graduate Institute, based on her doctoral research. Shriya's research problematises the passage of colonial and postcolonial legal and policy measures, as well as sexual regulation projects, surrounding Devadasi abolition in the modern Indian nation-state, culminating in the extinction of the regional Devadasi community in the state of Odisha (colloquially known as Maharis) in 2021. This work also provides an opportunity to shed light on the current political climate's impacts on iterations of popular culture and regional memory surrounding this community, especially in how history is rewritten and de-historicised through the lens of these actors in the present.

Crises—whether driven by conflict, climate shocks, or economic instability—rarely affect everyone equally. Women and girls often bear the heaviest burdens, facing heightened food insecurity, disrupted livelihoods, and increased risks to their health and safety. Yet, women are not only victims of crisis—they are powerful drivers of resilience and recovery. “Empowerment in Crisis: Gender-Responsive Solutions for Fragile Food Systems” brings together researchers, policymakers, and practitioners to examine how gender inequalities are deepened by crises, and how response strategies can be designed to reverse these patterns. The discussion will highlight practical approaches that place women at the center of crisis response and recovery—strengthening their voices, protecting their rights, and harnessing their leadership to build more resilient and equitable food systems.

In this episode, regular host Liz David-Barrett speaks with Emily Elia about her experimental research on voter behaviour and corruption in Latin American democracies. The conversation delves into the "feminization strategy", examining the level to which deploying women candidates after corruption scandals actually works to restore party credibility. The conversation also explores emerging questions about who becomes an anti-corruption fighter in politics and whether voters can tell genuine reformers from those just paying lip service to clean government.

Step into inner space, where people can explore and reflect on their feelings. The wars and environmental crises happening outside our walls also take place inside, manifesting as grief, anguish, and fear – emotions that often engender isolation and a sense of disconnection. Pepe Dayaw performed an original ambient ‘live set,’ inviting participants to rest and ponder their connection to human and other-than-human life on this planet. Dayaw blended musical styles, spoken words, and live and recorded sounds, including local colors, exotic motors, and nomadic journeys. Here, for a brief moment, we can listen and move within the spaces between us.

Jericho Records USA – The Story Behind the Sound

Welcome to Jericho Records USA.
This isn’t a traditional label — it’s the archive of a lifetime spent writing, recording, experimenting, breaking rules, and rebuilding myself through music.

The original Jericho Records was an independent label my father started in the 1950s. What you’re hearing here is something new — my continuation of that legacy, shaped by the times, the tools, and the life I’ve lived.

I grew up in a musical home. My father ran the church music ministry, my mother played piano, and I was singing before I could read. Drums at 5. Guitar at 7. Bass. Saxophone. Piano. Songwriting became the way I made sense of the world, and I’ve written close to a thousand songs — with thousands more to come. I later graduated from Full Sail University with a degree in Audio Production, blending old-school recording with modern technology.

You’ll notice the sounds here are diverse. That’s intentional.
I create under different artist names, different styles, different worlds — but the voice behind all of it is mine.

And to be fully transparent:

• Some tracks are traditional studio recordings — real drums, real guitars, real vocals, all performed by me.
• Some tracks blend live instruments, VSTs, and AI-assisted production.
• Some began as my raw guitar or vocal recording and were “covered” or re-interpreted through AI tools.
• Some are fully AI-generated compositions created from my prompts.
• But every song — no matter the method — was written by me and comes from real experiences, real chapters of my life.

AI, to me, is another instrument — another creative partner.
It doesn’t replace my voice or my story; it helps me bring more of it into the world.

Over the years I’ve worked with incredible people, including Dez Dickerson (Prince & The Revolution) and Tim Gaines (Stryper), and I’ve shared stages with bands like Drivin’ N’ Cryin, Corey Taylor, Saving Abel, Hinder, and Avenged Sevenfold. But the journey didn’t end there — it evolved.

Jericho Records USA is where all those chapters live at once:
the human hands, the digital experiments, the scars, the healing, the imagination, and the divine spark that keeps me creating.

If you’re here, I hope you find something that resonates — something that reminds you that music, in any form, is a lifeline.
