'Hyperactive-2' on @ssensorial concludes an era of exploration and introspection for Kevin Martínez. Some might say dance music isn’t political. Bollocks to that, it has been, it is and always will be political. It’s important that we remember our roots in such strange times and this new release on Optimo Music seeks to emphasise and define the importance of protest.

Recent legislation has been introduced seeking to ban the right to protest, it’s all gone a bit George Orwell but everyone’s been too busy watching shit TV and buying things they don’t need to notice.

Community Theater is the new project from DJ/producer and “dance music historian” Chrissy (Hooversound, Pets Recordings, Dansu Discs) alongside Lisbon-based DJ/producer/vocalist Maria Amor (Paraíso, Naivety).

The first physical release from Brooklyn-based DIY label Sorry Records, Having Everything draws on Chrissy & Maria's shared love of freestyle (the '80s dance genre that blended pop songwriting with electro production), robotic hi-NRG disco, and late-'80s / early-'90s dance pop. These are big, catchy vocal tunes, ready to smash the rave, school dance, cookout, quinceañera, family reunion, auto show, or your lil cousin's birthday party.

The duo’s previous collaboration, “Your Ghost”, was the standout track from Chrissy's 2019 album Resilience (Chiwax), garnering loads of radio & club support, as well as being licensed for a re-release on Needwant with a remix from X-Coast.

Chrissy & Maria were introduced by Lisbon legend Violet (Naive / Dark Entries), who contributes a remix to this EP alongside heavy-hitters Escaflowne (Sorry Records / Fixed Rhythms), Bianca Oblivion (NTS), and Maria’s Paraíso collaborator Shcuro (Naive / Dark Entries).

His music is heavily focused on Italo Disco and classic analog synthesizers, and already got many of you moving when we dropped his killer track ‘Spangle’ during our latest event. 

In this Radio Show he plays some of his other heartwarming productions together with some recent Italo Disco and Indie Dance releases from other artists.

After three EP's in his own name, and one with Moreno Ácido at Holuzam, Diogo makes his debut 12” in the Discos Extendes series with “FINALMENTE!”. In a singular appropriation of the vast legacy of rave culture, Diogo crosses, along four tracks, a certain time span between the 90's and the 2020's, with all kinds of recycling and updates that the exercise entails. Syncopated rhythmic patterns, robust basses, junglist echoes, haunted voices or celestial pads make up a revivalist sound palette, here rearticulated beyond linear structures. “Até Segunda” sets the tone in territories close to Objekt's Theme from Q in a live sound design amidst sudden disturbances and rallying hooks. Tracks 2 and 3 stand out for their plot twists: “Ponto de Não Retorno” starts with a frenetic breaky maze before get immersed in a oneiric landscape, and “What?!” progresses gently within Vancouver coordinates to be opened to a schizophrenic rawness that, from there, completely remakes the track. “Errar É Ok” is an exercise of decompression, melodically woven, with a dreamy coda pointing to nostalgic horizons. Violet closes the EP with a muscular version of “Ponto de Não Retorno”. "Finalmente!" marks for this unstable balance between familiarity and strangeness, intuitiveness and disturbance, euphoria and immersion. Tracks for the dance floor, yes, with a twist, to be rediscovered as often as you like.
