"Traces" is about a dream I had where I kept trying to see someone's face, but every time I went to turn them around to face me, it was their back again. It was very odd and frustrating, but it was visually very strong. So I wanted to transpose that feeling and visual into a song about two lovers who are doomed to repeat the same mistakes over and over again until it all falls apart. I was incredibly lucky to collaborate with the amazing Amp Live for the music on this track. His particular brand of strong and deep alt-hip hop beats allowed me to explore my version of R&B vocals, which was an awesome experience. Very happy with how it turned out!

Ultimately, “Del Mar” is a song about addiction and hopelessness. Lyrically, I culled a lot of incidents from my past to tell a story about how I felt several years ago at the darkest point in my life, where I was very lost and barely had a place to sleep at night. To juxtapose such a dark theme, I kept the music very uplifting, dreamy, and melodic which I hope creates an interesting experience for the listener. My favorite thing about the song is Adaline’s part; I asked her to write her lyrics and melody like she is the warm, welcoming voice of death, beckoning the weakened traveller to just let go and come with her. Luckily, I overcame that voice in real life.
