Over the past few years, Luca Binatti released a steady stream of quality EPs that showcased a remarkable talent with a clear understanding of what makes dance music unique. Also known for his guise as D:fferent Place, where house music is the main topic, Luca's boldest experiments belong under the Pressure Point project.

Pressure Point's debut on Pluie/Noir is no different — a collection of four ultra-personal tracks drenched in honest emotion and playful psychedelia. And it sounds as human as it sounds outer-worldly. Inspired by music genres unrestricted by the club ecosystems, "Ghost on Tape" features compositions that span from deeply spacial house to low-swung ultra-detailed minimal. 

Cover artwork features a stunning painting by the exquisite London-based artist David Surman. "Mask of a King / Midas" is inspired by Agamemnon's mask found in ancient Mycenae and Picasso's last self-portraits, furthering the emotional impact of the release as a whole.

Total creativity is something not many artists in the frame of electronic music or graphical art can claim to possess. Confined by what their gear can accomplish, the demand to keep developing new sonic formulas is often a thankless task. So what happens when the mind actually controls the machines (or digital mediums), rather than the reverse?

The ten artists commissioned by Pluie/Noir to construct Volume 2 of ‘Thoughts on Sight and Sound’, the second volume of the debut release of the label’s side-project Experimental Media, were faced with a complex but endlessly rewarding assignment: “Let us hear your thoughts”. 

From in-house artists under secret alias to new guests, Vol. 2 follows the same path of sonic experimentalism with no strings attached. 

The entire compilation was graphicaly translated with visual acuity by Vitrio in forms and shapes of limitless interpretations. Like any flexible, innovative mind, the cassette format provides an opportunity for the music to evolve with the listener, morphing with each listen. Like a new pair of jeans, the listener ‘wears’ this in, eventually absorbing something truly unique and personal, albeit ephemeral.

Hiatus over, Pluie/Noir podcasts are back, this time with a name little name change, in anticipation of a new collaboration with the @ringsofneptune agency managed by both @soundslikenies and @cleymoore. This podcast has been ready for more than a year, but due to the uncertainty of the future of this project, it was put on hiatus for a while.

Anestie Gomez is not a new name in the scene. His meticulous arrangements, a naïve approach to electronic and an unprecedented love for analog synthesizers have made him stand out over the last years as one of the youngest and most promising talents rising from Greece.

The four-tracker 'Short Stories for Tall People' marks his debut on Pluie/Noir and showcases his versatility both as a story-teller and a groove maker, with the perfect balance between machine rhythms and organic warmth for the upcoming seasons. A-side’s “No Regrets” (A1) is the EP’s warmest piece, with a clearly light-hearted approach to musical composition reminiscent of Mediterranean sunny days, while "Gurunext" (A2) shifts the tone entirely to a sonic palette of robotic glitches where groove is key, pleasing the micro-house aficionados craving detail and swing. The B-side has Anestie Gomez exploring a deeper organicity: 'Surmena' (B1) is a hypnosis-inducing, constantly moving composition clearly aimed at after-hours where time and space seem untraceable, and 'Supervixen' (B2) is the EP’s jazziest exploration around heavy drum programming, swing, and deep low-ends that ebb and flow with a very peculiar yet organic steadiness.

Pluie/Noir’s close admiration for the land of the rising sun and its artists is not new. Having released two very solid EP’s from veterans Radiq and Fumiya Tanaka in the past, the imprint drives its attention to Japan once again, this time to showcase the work of the young and talented Berlin-based artist Yuzo Iwata.

Already established as a valuable and passionate organizer and DJ in Japan’s music scene, Yuzo’s ‘Kiteki EP’ is his first vinyl output after his move to Berlin, and a perfect showcase of his skills in story-telling, musical composition, and sonic wizardry. “True Story (Kyakushoku Mix)” (A1) is the EP’s melodic behemoth: spanning through all sorts of emotional states, ‘True Story’ is a piece that‘s as ‘cinematographic sci-fi’ as it is ‘early-morning club’, especially due to its very particular movement of tension and release. "Night Train" (B1) is the set piece of Yuzo’s story about locomotion: a hypnosis-inducing, constantly moving musical translation of a night-time train ride through Japan, with a dubby deep low-end that constantly reminds the listener to keep moving. ‘Ueno’ (B2) is the last track of the EP and also the name of a train station in Tokyo, which (not) coincidently is the last station from multiple regions in Japan since a long time. Here, like a chameleon, Yuzo shows his versatility as a producer capable of bending musical genres where groove and sonic engagement are key to success.

The release was visually interpreted by the Japanese painter Mamoru Kondo through a traditional and highly special technique of rock painting mixed with animal glue, translating Yuzo’s musical train into a unique graphical work.

To celebrate our 6 years of existence we've decided to release a series of podcasts consisting of live-recorded performances on key Pluie/Noir events, from artists soon to be released on the imprint. This session from Peter F. Spiess was recorded live on the "6 Years of Pluie/Noir" event at Club der Visionaere.

— Hi Peter. Welcome to the series. How are you lately?
Hello, and thanks for letting me be part of this! I'm pretty well since the holidays just started for me and my family.

— You’ve been more or less out of the radar over the past 10 years. Why? Did you stop making music over this period to focus on other things?
I never stopped making music but during these years family life and my day job didn't leave much room for producing music the way I used to. I focused on chip music and worked with tracker programs on vintage computers whenever possible.

Around a year ago my I moved into a bigger house with my family and started building up a little home studio again. Since then I'm finally following my (sometimes pretty abstract) vision of electronic dance music again. I really missed that a lot over the last years.

— This mix was recorded live from the 6 Years of Pluie/Noir event at Club der Visionaere. What’s your setup and how do you prepare for your performances?
That was a very special event for me, as I'm a huge fan of Pluie/Noir and it was my first time at CDV. I always worked with a rather minimal setup when doing live sets. When I started playing gigs more than twenty years ago I usually only took an Akai MPC, a little Mixer and one or two analogue synths with me.

Since I wanted to play many of my old tracks from my Klang Elektronik releases I used an Elektron Octatrack as the main playback machine. I cut lots of loops from the old material to keep a maximum of flexibility while building up the live set. The other machine I used at the CDV was a Novation Circuit which to me is a pretty capable little box for live use. Both machines give me enough freedom to create completely new edits of my tracks.

— This is the year people will see you again on vinyl. What’s coming up?
Yes, there are three releases planned to come out on different labels so far. I'm also doing remixes again with at least one being scheduled for release later this year.

I'm really excited about all of them but I'm also super happy to play live again after such a long pause. 

The planned release on Pluie/Noir can be seen as the follow up to my Crystal Polymorphs album from 2001 since it will be the longest and most versatile release of my music since then. I think Bruno did an amazing job when selecting and combining the tracks for this double vinyl.

— Future plans, be it artistic or personal?
I hope to be much more creative in the future. It's such a fundamental part of my life and it has been suppressed for far too long. 

I'm very thankful for meeting so many nice people through my music!

Peter F. Spiess is no newcomer, especially to those akin to a type of ultra minimized dance music explored between the late ’90s and the early ’00s. Peter’s one of those artists blessed with an unparalleled ability to abstract and simplify dance music down to its purest elements: sonic bare-bones, both rich and impactful.

Peter’s debut on Pluie/Noir, “Polymorphs XX”, is the spiritual successor to “Crystal Polymorphs”, the artist’s only album over the last 20 years and a bold collection of memorable electronic music cuts that achieved a low-key cult-status between diggers and DJs alike from all around the globe. Showcasing creations both old and new, "Polymorphs XX" dives further into Peter’s ultra-personal sonic cosmos in a 12 track album with music written over the last 20 years, spanning from ultra minimized glitch-techno to low-swung electro.

Pluie/Noir is finally back with a two-track EP from Vlad Caia.
Swan Lake shows with finesse his staggering skills to craft cinematographic atmospheres in danceable patterns, bending musical styles and constantly reminding us that club music can be so much more. Both sides share the same classical-inspired background while still being quite different in mood and lightness. Striking at 14 minutes each, the progression on these tracks remain sophisticated and visionary, messing with your head and heart in unexpected ways. 
'Swan Lake' is a delicate yet striking piece, with a precise yet unusual drum-programming and intelligent classical-music sampling. The flip-side 'Eternal Sunshine' is a darker toned track, with slight-flashes of acid in it's core bass-line and ever-lifting tense chords that unexpectedly rumble between the intense atmosphere and lift both your body and soul.
Artwork was handpainted by designer Max Binski, Pluie/Noir's curator and art director.

Originally planned as the first part of a 3xLP album, ‘Kepler 66 Hotline’ is a collection of tracks deeply inspired by 90's sci-fi infected Detroit electro, drenched in deep mellow tones, weird outer-worldly timbres and sharp drum-arrangements.

According to its creators: 

"This post-apocalyptic journey is set in 2046 A.D. far out on the Kepler 66 Planet, where The Douglas Brothers (Alchemists of Sound) have now set up their inter-dimensional sonic fortress. Due to complications on Earth and a third world war breaking out, Earth's population was forced to migrate to unknown territories. Those with pride choose to stay, while others took off to finally create their Utopias on alternate dimensions.

EVANO
 
You are the first artist chosen for our conceptual podcast series. What made you accept pluie/noir’s invitation to be part of the collective?
:: I stumbled upon Cleymoores’ soundcloud profile in June 2011 and wrote him an email regarding his particular sound and technique. I liked it immediately. I was soon invited to join pluie/noir and it was my pleasure to be a part of such promising concept. I think it will be a prolific connection.
 
You have started your first DJing experiences in 2004, 8 years later in what did music change your life?
:: It changed my life in many aspects. I found my passion and discovered the possibility of artistic expression in it. It occupies my mind in a positive way, and over the years it helped me meet some wonderful and amazing people. As being a DJ/producer I found the ideal way to channel my perception of music and feelings to the people.

The electronic music scene changed a lot in the last decades. What are the main differences you feel from when you started djin' until now?
:: If we are speaking about the past eight years, I don't think there were such big changes in electronic music. Everything was, and still is overflowed with such hyper production, that is difficult to find the things you really like. Therefore the sole digging became a much longer process for me. But it became also essentially different. Music has so much to offer if you search deeper and longer. For me there are no long nights when I start searching for some underrated, old and mostly unheard material. I spend less time on beatport and more on pages like discogs and decks. So I buy more vinyl, but still try to follow many net-labels that I like and support.
 
What's your take on experimental minimalist approach ? Will you stick to it?
:: It’s hard to say. That is the genre that fits to me at the moment. The minimal approach fascinates me more in production than in DJing. So I’ll try to keep my production experimental as much as possible. It’s a challenge, being accurate, exploring every single track in the song and make it unique. For me it’s a rational, systematic research in sound. On the other hand I do what feels right, so it’s also instinctive and unpredictable.
 
You're a dj and a producer. What inspires you?
:: Modular systems and Sonic art. And everything else I hear and see.

AYANE
 
You were responsible for illustrating Evano’s podcast. What can you tell us about your triptych? 
:: It's a fabulous podcast. I got myself lost in some very distinct moments. Since I got the oportunity to make it into a triptych, It was easier for me to separate some moments of the podcast in 3 different stages. Even though the 3 posters work solo as 3 distinct moments of the podcast, they are meant to be felt as a whole, and feel the mutations of the sound in a visual way from the first third to the final one.
 
In japanese, "Ayane" means “aya” (colour), “aya” (design) or “aya” (kimono design) combined with the “ne” (sound). Does your name mean that your influences are essentially Oriental ones?
 :: I have a special bond with the japanese culture. I really enjoy their simplicity, the minimalism taken to extreme, either it's in graphic design, industrial design, architecture, music or cinema. They have a supreme attention to detail, sometimes getting close to the utopic perfection. “Ayane” reflects that bond I have to Japan, and their simplicity.
 
You were invited by Exquisite Collective from Buenos Aires, along with Max Binsky and João Ricardo, to represent Pluie/Noir in a International project called Exquisite Corpse, that will be published online (web page and behance) and probably later in a book. What can you tell us about this ?
:: The Exquisite Collective started off as a platform to enable the exchange and interaction between artists, designers, photographers and creatives from all over the world. This project is based on a type of word "game" called Exquisite Corpse, used among surrealists. It's a creative factory! Each participant will contribute to this project, in sequence, with a personal illustration connected to the last in at least one element.
I already did my contribution, Max Binski and João will follow.

Color or Pantone ?
:: Blue Klein! Ah ... and "running donkey". An expression I created to something like pantone color of 2012: tangerine tango. I never think of a colors as a standalone, I think of them as a pair of colours or more. But Blue Klein is an exception. It's a good standalone color, I picture it alone in different forms, textures, contexts, probably by direct influence of Yves Klein. 
 
Is Design a Passion, and is it your only one? Where can we find AYANE ?
:: Yes, a true passion. "Those who run happy don't get tired".
Design is my work and also my hobby, and its great that it is so. I have a full time job at an Industrial Design company called Mordomias in Porto, and I also do freelance work in my "free" time.
Graphic Design is a tool. A tool of self-expression. I just need time and space to make the magic happen. Music is a different passion, but ultimately it can be my inspirational muse.

PLACID STRAIT aka SHCAA

Welcome Monsieur Sacha. How are you feeling lately?
Shcaa: I'm feeling quite happy, thanks! Got my first vinyl released this week on Sharing Tones, and now this podcast.. two very precious things for me, all good!

You're a quite talented and heteroclite emerging artist. Does music fill your day-by-day routine? What do you do for a living?
Shcaa: I'm still a student. Even though, as I like to say, I often feel like I'm doing music and only studying in my free time.. I do not produce everyday though, and I'm not planning to make it my only activity. That comes only if I feel something. I rather have a listening routine! When I wake up, the first thing I do is play a record.

The story-telling and all it's betweens seem to be your major focus on music making. What are your main inspirations (not necessarily related to electronic music)?
Sacha: True, sometimes it is a story, sometimes it is simply a context, a set of mind that I am trying to reproduce. My tracks often represent something that I perceive as somehow important for me but remains ineffable, so I link it with the closest subjective ideas that come to me thinking of it, like some kind of very inner and nuanced feelings or memories. So I start by arranging a track somewhere in space, and I add many elements trying to reproduce those feeling. It's ideas that I cannot express with single meanings.

"Iz Pepla". What does it mean, how does it relate to your podcast, when and how was it recorded?
Sacha: I was going to name the podcast "from ashes" when it was half way done; I had this feeling it was somehow going back in time in the first part (or just a reverse of some sort), until there is nothing left, then going back again but through a completely new path. Then I thought "from ashes" sounded too holywoodian, so I translated it in Russian as I just came back from Moscow and I was quite moved by the whole experience there.
It's a cut-paste-edit of tracks, using quite a lot of field recordings to add a notion of space as well as consistency while going from one to another.

What are your plans for the future?
Sacha: Moving back to Paris this autumn! I left 15 years ago when I was just a child so it's definitely going to affect my creative process, as I started producing in London. I really want to express what I have in mind for Placid Strait the same way I'm slightly starting to do as Shcaa.


JULI JAH

Welcome aboard! How's life Juli?
Juli: Hey! Good days, busy, nice, colored. Ah, and sunny! Spring is finally here.

You have a bachelor in Interior Architecture. What do you do for a living nowadays?
Juli: Yes, architecture is great, but I play with way more smaller details than drawing floor plans, I draw illustrations.

Your work is balanced between ultra detail and the strictly necessary minimalistic strokes. How do you work most of the times, and how do you describe your technique?
Juli: Techno ink and needles. Music as my inspiration; watercolor, rapidograph and isograph ink pens as tools and techniques.
Topic, hard to say. Sometimes I have a briefing, sometimes not. I can only say that designs are at their best when a client trusts me entirely, and I do my work how I feel it needs to be done.

What can you tell us about your triptych?
Juli: Ah, those ladies. "See no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil". You know it? Almost the same. And by the way, Shcaa made a great job too tying all this together.

What's next on your bucket list for 2012?
Juli: Creating more stuff, meeting more people and showing more arts.

After several years of hiatus, we're rebooting Pluie/Noir's Bandcamp to release a unique album from a good friend and newcomer Shōen, marking a well-needed return of the Experimental Media sub-label. Shōen's album "Plant.æ" is a delicately soothing sonic adventure of morphing echoes, otherworldly rhythms, and hazy textures: a collection of tracks that perfectly fits PNEM's catalog and caters to our long-time devotion to ambient and experimental electronics.

A message from Shoen:

"Dear Listeners,

This album was created as a reflection of my dreams. It was produced in one week, spontaneously, using only my modular system and the organelle. The music you hear in dreams is often very hard to remember, but through a lot of meditation, I found a way to translate it. A few years ago I made the choice to live by the sea, where I can sustain myself and get inspiration from the birds, the fishes, and kinky little crabs. That's exactly what I tried to convey in this album: my own little world. They say inspiration comes from your quality of life, and I believe in this deeply! That’s why I’d like to thank all the people who directly or indirectly helped me in my artistic and human development.

First of all, to my own blood: I’m really grateful to have my mum, dad and my sister’s daily and unconditional support.

I'd like to thank Bruno and Pluie/Noir, for allowing me to express myself on this beautiful project, and for believing in me. A big thank you to my friends: to Louise, who gave me a lot of inspiration and without whom this album wouldn’t be the same.
