'Delta-Sleep-Inducing Peptide (D.S.I.P.) was founded in 1989 by Dieter Mauson + Siegmar Fricke. Until 1994 D.S.I.P. produced around 25 cassettes, published on various tape-labels all around the world and on the privately run D.S.I.P.-cassette-label. The music was recorded with electronic equipment on analogue tape-recorders and cassette-decks in their own homestudios in Hamburg, Mainz and Wilhelmshaven/Germany. D.S.I.P. exclusively concentrated on the realisation of experimental + subtle soundtracks which can be described as mind-cinema of the subconscious. The stages of sleep + phenomena of dreams have been musically explored in an idiosyncratic sound-approach. In 1993 D.S.I.P. contributed also to a vinyl-LP entitled "Abschied aus Berne" (including a track by Asmus Tietchens) with an extraordinary soundscape of 10 minutes. Live-performances took place in Belgium and Germany (Herford, Bochum, Hamburg, Mainz). After the last tape PRE-NATAL in summer 1994, D.S.I.P. stopped. Now, 19 years later, the project has been reactivated involving remastered tapes (digital downloads), video-material, photos and a non-chronological mixture of old and new material.

HONEST JON'S GRAVEYARD MIX

'So I guess the idea was to bring together some music that's broadly representative of the shop: what we sell, support and distribute. It's a mixture of old an new, obscure and more widely known but more importantly, that I've found scattered around the shop over the years of being both a customer and an employee. It's rough, improvisational and I wanted to make it sound similar to when I track records for customers or even for myself when I dig for music during my breaks or at the end of the day - switching quickly between genres and styles, but that somehow still makes sense as a whole unit of music.

It was recorded at home, after digging up 12s and LP's from my collection - 2 turntables and a 2-channel mixer. Vinyl only.

KENKEY SPECIAL

'Kenkey Special is different in many ways from my other material. Whereas the tracks on the album (and the EPs) were often tightly harmonically and rhythmically integrated, these tracks are often more atonal and the rhythms more chaotic. There are hints of almost bebop-like phrases. Chord sequences move aimlessly to uncertain destinations...
There is a sense of disintegration and disconnection.

There is one major technical change that I've used for the first time here - phasing rhythms that aren't locked into the tempo (You can hear one example around the 33 minute mark in the high synth plinks).

The tone is distorted and uglier than before. The title came from a sign I saw in an African market (it wasn't in Africa). I didn't know what it meant at the time, but I found the words evocative, and that combined with some negative events started to shape this new material and the feel of the mix.'

DISCOFUTURE

'As I'm assuming is the case for most music fans, I often find myself fluctuating between moments of admiration and slight frustration with the state of new music. Admiration at new sounds I hear then, at times, frustration that sounds I want to hear aren't available. This unavailability can be due to stagnation within particular scenes or scenes just simply heading in different directions to what I'd prefer. That doesn't mean that the available music is substandard... nor does it mean I'm left bitter or unhappy either. Far from it, actually. However, it does often lead me to explore music from the past in an attempt to envision what these non-existent futures would sound like. This is a process I've done several times in the past and I often end this process by creating a "discofuture" mix in an attempt to create this imagined future... to have the past masquerading as the future. These mixes have been made for personal use in the past but Blowing Up the Workshop has been kind enough to let me share this one with you. I hope you enjoy it.'
