Hey again! "Black Billy'' is a new song written by my neighbor and music buddy, Ted Bales (shown in this grainy pic). We get together on Tuesdays, so call ourselves the Tuesday Troubadours. Song is about a guy with a dark soul whose only friends are his bottle and his gun. It rocks! Please have a listen. BB

Lonely on the mountain
running through the snow
Searching for some shelter
Such a long way to go
He looks up in the sky
Sees the eagle flying high
And wishes for wings

Born to hunt in solitude
An outcast from the pack
Fighting for survival
Never looking back
Never questions why
But he looks up to the sky
And wishes for wings

Free is his spirit
But he’s tied to the ground
Seldom leaves a track
And he moves without a sound
The night will hear his cry
As the moon shines in his eye
A voice inside him sings
How I wish I had wings



Someday his steps will falter
His journey will finally end
But his spirit will live forever

Please Subscribe 2 my YouTube channel/Like this video/leave Comments.  Here's another collaboration between poet Michael Lee Johnson and songwriter, arranger & singer Mike Turner, adapting Michael’s free-verse poem, “Jukebox Collage,” into song.

Michael’s poem evokes the 1950s with visions of drive-ins and sock-hops, all revolving around classic rock and roll artists and songs, ultimately bringing the recollections into the 1970s. But it goes beyond mere nostalgia, with references to the hopes and dreams of those eras that went unfulfilled, from lost love to the death of Buddy Holly.

Mike’s song adaptation zeros in on the ‘50s part of the poem, fleshing out the music and dancing with some added references to songs like “Maybellene” and “Jailhouse Rock” and the towering rock and roll artists of the era like Chuck Berry, Little Richard and Jackie Wilson. It retains the poignant aspects of the poem - love that was supposed to last forever, but didn’t; and the deaths of Buddy Holly, Richie Valens and The Big Bopper - and the reflection that though these times are long past, they’re still real to those who lived them. The musical arrangement reinforces the nostalgia, arranged as a rockabilly song with pumping bass, rhythm guitar and pounding piano that evokes Jerry Lee Lewis.

Flower Girl (Tears in Your Eyes), is about the mystery of how strangers come together as if by divine will. My lady friend and I were driving inside Mount Carmel Cemetery, Hillside, Illinois. It is a Catholic cemetery, the final resting place of numerous organized crime figures, the most notorious of these being Al Capone. We slowed down and noticed a young adult crying while placing flowers at a mausoleum. We stop see her; she notes and approaches the truck window in tears to express her hurt, her sorrow. For about two minutes, confessions of stories and information were exchanged as if drawn into by divine intentions. This was a week before Mother’s Day. In the middle of the Coronavirus pandemic, there is a time of fear, death, and paranoia, even close proximity to others. May 2020.
