Animix is back! I'm sooooo happy to be returning to the series with this new mix by local talent Hannah D (@hld). Brisbane's finest import, and curator of @thespacebetweenus, has recently taken the Melbourne scene by storm with her fun, groovy style & flawless skill. This mix is total euphoria, which I think really reflects the mood of the Melbourne scene at the moment in a (sort of) post-covid world.

For the 97th entry in the Honcho Podcast Series, we welcome Baronhawk Poiter (@baronhawkpoitier)! Growing up in PG County, Maryland nestled between Baltimore and Washington, DC shaped life for artist Baronhawk Poitier. Listening to local radio stations and sorting through records while working at The Record Exchange heavily influenced his pursuit of a career as a producer and DJ. He was recognized alongside mentor Kris Klayton aka Karizma/ Kaytronik with a grant from the National Endowment of Arts for electronic music production. Baronhawk expresses his passion for cultural preservation and education working with dance legends at the nonprofit culture and education project Urban Artistry, Inc. He has also earned a name for himself within the LGBTQIA+ dance music community as a member of the unique DC based queer artist collective “The NeedleExchange,” who are known for their independent events, raves and DJ residencies. 

In February of this year, we hosted Baronhawk for the Not Mass weekly stream. His outstanding mix blew us all a way and served as a beautiful 90 minute escape of house and funk. Baronhawk radiates joy; you can always count on him to bring a smile to your face.

Ghost Phone on the mix, "I'm never sure what to say about mixes or Ghost Phone, I like to let people make their own minds up and take from it what they will. I wanted to do something that will rattle your speakers and tug on your heartstrings, beautiful but also weighty, where sexy meets weird. It's probably the most 'dancefloor' GP mix yet but then again that depends on what you think the dancefloor is or what it should be. In my world, this is what it looks like.”

Jointly shepherded by Albert Salinas (@wooky) and Philip Sherburne (@psherburne), two friends living in Cardedeu, Catalonia, and on the Balearic island of Menorca, Balmat grew out of Lapsus Radio, a weekly show on Spain’s Radio 3 (https://www.rtve.es/play/audios/lapsus). Balmat’s mission is simple: to foster new ideas, expand upon personal obsessions, and put enveloping sounds out into the world.
“Balmat” means “empty” or “void” in Catalan. But quite apart from any negative connotations, we prefer to think of it in terms of possibility: a space waiting to be filled.

Next up on the mix series is one of 2020’s most exciting breakout artists, @JamesBangura. The Washington DC producer has become synonymous with the quality that's come from NYC’s Towhead and Haus Of Altr's compilations, whilst Mister Saturday Night dropped ‘Interpretation of Sound’ on wax at the end last year. His musical roots are mutli-disciplinary. Once a military man and marching band member, his early years were spent playing piano and break dancing.

2021 is forecast to be another exciting one, particularly on 12 inch: An EP on Art-E-Fax came in January and there’s rumours of a project on a UK label who’s logo is an eight legged underwater creature, amongst others.

Think Jungle come US House and Techno. His productions are some of the least genre defining around, with dusty, industrial textures a plenty, presumably influenced from his blog house days. Whilst James Bangura is very much at the forefront of the club scene at present, his recent 12” projects are very much bodies of work, those fit for listening as well as the dance.
