Steve Bug is one of electronic music’s true originals. His relentless commitment to quality has made him one of the world’s most revered artists and curators, and along with his label Poker Flat has made a sizeable contribution to the house and techno scene as we know it.
Although dedicated to his own labels Steve’s talents have na- turally attracted the attention of other imprints. Bedrock, Knee Deep In Sound, Minus, Cocoon and Defected are just some of the labels that have championed original tracks and remixes.
Following on from 'Time Flies 1 here is the second decade in Steve Bug's ongoing and impressive career, highlighting his best productions from the years 2009 - 2019.
From instantly recognisable classics like Chordwalk Empire, The Arpeggio or Coconut Paradise to more stripped down raw and tracky vibes his full range of talents is present.
Not to be missed are Bug's collaborations with Cle, Langen- berg, Mr V or Jake the Rapper. The fact that it’s easy to imagi- ne another compilation with as many tracks again is testament not just to his prolificness, but also the quality control applied to every release. Steve Bug - Time Flies 2 (The Best of Steve Bug 2009 - 2019)

Kicking off the new year Steve Bug style – Poker Flat Recordings sets course for another year of quality house music. The label boss himself presents us with the first transmission of 2014 - and the title succinctly nails what to expect.

'Simple, Thick & Raw' contains three tracks that are simultaneously gritty, tough and highly effective. 

'The Arpeggio' contains Bug’s signature control of tension – an arpeggiated synth line bubbles along, hardly restrained, on top of a firing drum pattern, resulting in a groove wound tight and packed with suspense. 

'Thickest Bass' is also fairly self explanatory- a pitched down vocal introduces what might just be the filthiest bottom end Bug has ever produced. The track has a raw, off-kilter quality that will see it destroy many clubs when dropped at the optimum moment.

'Smoking Parrot' completes the trio, a tough yet spacey burner that builds into a indisputable floor-rocker, complete with punchy claps, descending bass-line and Bug’s well honed dynamics.

'Life in Circles'  completes the release - a tech house pearl with a touch of acid.

Celebrating the 150th vinyl EP release, and as a prelude to 15 years of Poker Flat Recordings, Steve Bug returns to his own label to drop a sizzling three track EP of powerful, seductive house music.

Lead cut 'Pelican Glide' exhibits his trademark driving grooves and highly effective off-kilter synths - the sort of track that turns dance floors and festivals upside down when dropped at the right moment. The deep kick hits hard while clever interplay between pads, melodic leads and percussion keep the tension finely tuned.

Fellow Berliners youANDme yield a remix of 'Pelican Glide', which transforms the track into something spacey and cinematic, before subtly reintroducing Steve Bug's killer synth line.

Also gracing this release is 'Till It's Gone'; built around a tough-as-nails house groove, and coupled with a breathy, alluring vocal from Delhia De France: the grand diva of the German electronic scene.

Inspired by the success of last summer's retrospective on Poker Flat, Steve Bug takes up his Traffic Signs moniker once more for a fabulous jam that more than merits the 10-year wait. The uncredited tunes that first came out under this name were classic jack tracks that devastated dancefloors - and 'Cookie Jar' is a more than worthy successor.

This is stripped-down house, Chicago-esque, direct and determined to make you move. Berlin legend Jake The Rapper adds downright dirty humour with a spoken vocal fit for an age of internet sextapes and celebrity photo hacking. 'I like what you're cookin. Those cookies smell goooood,' he rascalously declares.
Three mixes and an instrumental version sprinkle the musical equivalent of chocolate chips, pecans and Brazilian stardust over the original. Steve Bug makes fine adjustments for the club, bouncing around the kick drums and doubling the synth riff with strings, while Joyce Muniz's dark, strobing treatment adds a dirty bass line for sexy, sweat-drenched dancefloors everywhere. Stripping away the vocal on the dub, Muniz's production talents are all the more scintillating, irresistibly kinetic from beginning to end.

The brilliant video for 'Cookie Jar' has been created by swiss-french duo Ben & Julia, who let us take part in their playful, colorful and surreal world that suits the song so well.

Not content with presiding over three out- standing labels - Dessous, Audiomatique and Poker Flat (now in its 16th year) - and dusting down his long-dormant Traffic Si- gns pseudonym for the brilliant "Cookie Jar", Steve Bug finds time in his schedule to spoil you with another stellar release.

The title track "Coconut Paradise" is a ma- sterclass in crisp, high-definition house, as dubby synths, a solid kick and an insistent bass stab form a deeply hypnotic groove. Sustained tones surge in from the distance - all the elements coming together to create a perpetual motion machine.

"Thick As Mud" lives up to its name: this is house music that draws on the deep and deadly palette and spacious arrangements of dubstep and glitch, burnished with sni- ckering percussive repetitions and scything synths.

"Pants on Fire" is a restlessly inventive bricolage of unconventional percussive sounds and textures. Metallic tones ping and bounce deliciously in every direction.

Following on from the well received Chord Cluster 12" from late 2017, the irresistible pairing of Steve Bug (@stevebug) and Langenberg (@langenberg) return with 'Paradise Sold' - a full ten track album of exquisitely crafted house music on Bug’s own Poker Flat Recordings. 

Neither Steve Bug nor Langenberg needs much introduction due to the sizeable contributions both have made in building the European house and techno scene as we know it. Bug’s relentless commitment to quality - both in his own work and in the many producers he has championed - has made him one of electronic music's most revered artists and curators.

Langenberg aka Max Heesen is the deep guru of the German Deep House Scene. One half of the duo Ribn, he has released on labels like Drumpoet, STH- LM Audio, Strax Leaves, Ovum and most notably on Dessous who put out his debut solo LP released in late 2016. Put these two dons in a studio together, and the results are truly special.

The album is a masterclass in house music production and came to life as a true collaborative work. "It feels great to work with Max and I don't know why we didn't get to work together earlier" says Steve Bug. "It feels very natural to be in the studio together and our two worlds match easily. I think I speak for the both of us, when I say, by combining forces we came up with tunes, that we wouldn't have created on our own."

"I really enjoyed the process of making this album", adds Langenberg. "We weren't just sending tracks back and forth over the internet. It was the two of us working together in the studio. It was interesting to experience how the tracks came to life. In the end all the tracks have both of our handwritings, but the final result has become bigger than just the sum of our individual input."

Paradise Sold is a hardware-heavy production, with the Moog Sub 37, Dave Smith Sequential Prophet 6, Studio Electronics Omega 8, Roland Juno 60, Juno 106, and TB 303 all used before the entire albums was mixed down with engineering legend turned producer Hannes Bieger at his studio to make use of his analog mixing gear.

01 Steve Bug & Cle -  It's Time - Snippet

Steve Bug drops a new outstanding 12” on his own highly prolific Poker Flat Recordings. Those Grooves is the perfect primer for his upcoming album (due out in autumn 2012), and sees the man in fine form - masterfully in control of his sound and producing tracks with a depth of dancefloor knowledge most other producers would die for. 

"Those Grooves", the lead track locks into its exquisitely crafted groove early on, holding a taut balance between its individual elements. Mid way through its 10 minutes, Bug drops the tempo and lets the groove breath, before bringing it all back home  - an audacious late night club weapon.
 
The flip side is no less dramatic – "Tell Me Why'" creeps up, evolving slowing but surely – before an edgy, freaked out bass line drops over the crisp drums. A true peak-time burner with enough energy and tension to smash any floor.

A year after ‘Together / That’s Right’, long-time friends and sonic sparring partners Steve Bug and Cle return to Rejected with two more statements of timeless intent that tap into the classic foundations of true techno story telling.

Long builds, emotional chords, layers and narrative twists are the devils in the detail as the pair present another couple of ageless hypnotic trips: The craftily titled ‘Tweaky Blinders’ takes the lead with its sombre one stroke chords whispering over the robust kicks and salubrious subs while the wily acid flurries between the spaces. Stately, immersive and coded with sentiment; drop it and watch the crowd march in unison.

The equally wryly titled ‘Bark Side Of The Moog’ follows suit. Once again there’s a solemn air to the chords as they sway with pensive poignancy. This time the drum arrangement is much more full frontal and unavoidable. Rolling with a sense of momentum that’s almost mid 90s prog in its energy, shine and behaviour, yet again Steve and Cle have nailed the timeless feel. Hopefully this will become an annual thing and they’ll return to Rejected for another round this time next year….

Originally dropping on vinyl only in 2015, Apes Go Bananas is both the name of the label, and that of the production team behind the mighty Kerri On. 

The duo happen to be Steve Bug and Clé, and the boys have decided to re-release the track on Dessous with a pair of killer remixes. 

The original still sounds fresh and raw, a continued homage to one of the greatest, with Chandler-esque crisp drums and deep, jazzy chords. 

First up on remix duties is James Dexter, the young Brit with the golden touch, who adds his distinctive take on the track. The drums knock hard and the groove is tightly wound, with the vocal snippets and spacey synth opening the vibe up. 

Langenberg, the Berlin producer and long time Steve Bug collaborator, also goes deep with his refix. The jazzy chords are brought to the fore, and the shaker-heavy groove snakes around the melody to create a sure-fire deep burner.

Steve Bug, one of the world's most renowned artists in the electronic music circuit, presents his fifth and most mature longplayer. "Noir" doesn't deny its roots, but expands the usual spectrum and invites the listener to an exciting listening pleasure.
The title is ‘Noir’. The cover is dominated by the filmic aesthetics of light and shadow. The title evokes a world of shady transactions and secret crimes. Most of the tracks emit a suitably dark and moody atmosphere, with at least three directly referencing the film noir genre – From the well-known classic ‘The Spiral Staircase’, to more obscure ‘Somewhere in the Night’, and ‘The Seventh Victim’. Is ‘Noir’ a concept album? Origi- nally it was planned that way, but in the end Steve found the concept too rigid.

"I play all over the world on a constant basis, and always come back with different impressions", says Steve Bug. "Accordingly, this changes the music that I produce. I’ve had the idea to make a concept album for some time, but on the other hand, that’s not the way I work. My music expresses my moods, and of course, they are always changing. "

The material for the new album was created over a period of three years, which makes its consistency and coherence all the more amaz- ing.	The mood is dark, spooked. Over the relentless beats and basslines ghostly sounds swirl and conspire. Although all the pieces are driven by head-rushing beats, ‘Noir’ is more than ever, a listening album. "If I had worked longer on the album, I probably would have replaced even more of the dance tracks with listening tracks", says Steve. "I think a lot of albums in dance music are not convining as albums - more a collection of tracks, than a coherent whole."

‘Noir’ is definitely different. Although the film noir concept isn’t carried through completely, it infuses the spirit of the record in a way reminicent of the sci-fi obsession of Jeff Mills or Carl Craig. In fact, ‘Noir’ could soundtrack a 21st Century ‘Blade Runner’ - tracks such as the pre-re- leased single ‘Those Grooves’ and ‘No Adjustments’, with their evocative spoken word texts, play in to a vision of an apocalyptic-dystopian disco.

‘Noir’ is very much an electronic album. Richer than its predecessor, these tracks easily transcend the merely functional - Steve Bug has in- jected the harmonies with serious emotion. Avoiding the trap of many house music producers, Steve has resisted the temptation to throw in an album full of live instrumentation, explaining: "the results have never convinced me. You have to find musicians who understand repetitive music, otherwise the whole thing is so watery." ‘Poison of Choice’, with its sensational guitar solo, is the exception - and the result of a techni- cal difficulty. Due to non-compatible plug-ins, access was blocked to a sample, and Steve ended up asking his mixer Hannes Bieger to play the guitar chords. While the recording was made, the idea to add the solo happened and the results were so good they ended up defining the track. Two of the standout tracks involve sublime vocals from performers Steve has a strong affinity for. Emilie Chick, the Portland born, genre- scrambling rising star brings a femme fatale’s touch of jazz to 'Moment of Ease'.
The aforementioned 'No Adjustments' with its driving, edgy groove and out of control synth, is enhanced by the spoken word exhortation to just let the beats flow - the unmistakable work of the Foremost Poet Johnny Dangerous.

Aside from that, Steve Bug has always recorded everything on his own – and similarly, developed his distinctive harmonic knowledge by himself. "I have no training as a musician - I taught myself about harmonies. When I realised that many of my heroes in electronic music, whose mu- sic always seemed so rich, was done with the help of others, I have al- ways been a little disappointed". In this respect Steve can be proud about the fact that his experience producing the intricate and exceptional ‘Noir’ was achieved on his own.

From the driving opener ‘Tell Me Why’ to the emotional closing track ‘The Seventh Victim’, Steve Bug has crafted a rounded, atmospheric al- bum that throws a long and impressive shadow over most contemporary dance albums.

Fresh on the trail of this year’s exceptional long player ‘Noir’, Steve Bug returns with perhaps his most deep house-oriented track in a while – ‘The Long Run’.

Teaming up with US house legend Mr. V, who inititally donated vocals only, the collaboration brought up Mr V‘s own interpretation of Bug‘s track. This release is as delicious a serving of classic New York deep house as you will hear all year – or any year.

Dessous’ main man is at the controls, riding out a sumptuous, Rhodes-driven groove that references golden era Kerri Chandler and friends, but remains completely rooted in 2012. Mr V’s spoken word vocal lays out the manifesto for these two house pioneers – both are committed to quality music, made with passion and respect.

Next stop on ‘The Long Run’ is Mr. V’s stunning take on the same track. Ratcheting up the percussive elements, the New York native injects hints of the Latin rhythms that define many of his productions, making this into a stone-cold club banger whatever the party.

Both tracks come with corresponding instrumental versions for the DJs, rounding out this irresistible release that continues Dessous’ outstanding run of releases this year.
