Q: Hi Biko, thank you so much for sharing a very joyful tip of your far-stretching record collection with us in this podcast episode. We can not wait to invite you for a real-life session to share your love on a dancefloor with us. Is there a record that stands out for you personally in this mix? 

If I have to choose one song from this mix it would be Yemba Aba by Ghanian artist Kojo Frimpong on the album Megye Mani. A wonderful piece of digital Highlife with hints of Synth-Pop and Electro. It has such an amazing drive combined with those lyrics which will send everyone to another dimension. Fun fact about this record, it got recorded at Black and White Studio in Muiden and released on the Dutch label Bigstof Production.

Q: What is the first record that you’ve ever bought, and do you still play/listen to it? 

The first record I ever bought was Fatima Yamaha’s classic What’s A Girl To Do. As a dj I don’t use it at all because my taste in music has shifted a lot since I bought that record but I occasionally put it on for listening pleasure. The vocal sample which is the voice of Scarlett Johansson gets me every time. It is sampled from the film Lost In Translation, an amazing movie about the loneliness of two characters who wander through an immense, chaotic city of which they do not speak the language or understand the culture.

Q; Who is currently your favorite producer?

Since I mainly play music from the 80’s and 90’s it will be a producer from that era. The producer who is one of my favorites has got to be Don Laka. He has released some amazing solo LP’s, but also produced a lot of music for other musicians in South Africa such as Brenda Fassie. He was also one of the main producers of Kwaito in the 90’s, in that time he also co-launched the record company that was to become Kalawa Jazmee. Kwaito has to be one of my favorite genres which emerged in the Townships of Johannesburg and it is heavily influenced by Hip Hop, Jazz, Ragga, and House.

Q: What is your favorite record shop?

My favorite record shop has to be Rush Hour in Amsterdam. They have an amazing selection for dj’s. If you like Techno, go to Rush Hour. If you like Disco, go to Rush Hour. If you like World music, go to Rush Hour. Besides all the new releases, they also have an amazing second-hand collection which gets updated every Monday around 12:00 p.m. so check their store or site! And last but not least, the instore sessions they used to have prior to corona.

@Yadavasoflute, the self-described instrument fumbler and radio mumbler hosts a monthly radio show ‘Expansions’ on NTS Manchester alongside fellow Manchester producer and studio collaborators @Contoursmusic. 

As co-founder of long-standing Mancunian club night So Flute, a community focussed party with an open music policy, Yadava draws upon soulful grooves and rhythms with a particular inflection towards jazz-influenced and percussive sounds. 

Contours is the project of musician, producer and DJ Tom Burford. Growing up playing drums and percussion, Contours’ productions draw heavily upon this, incorporating sounds and rhythms from Africa and Latin America coupled with those more often heard spilling out of dark sweaty basement clubs. 

These two forces combined led to a mix that explores the spaces, rhythms and textures that sit between house, jazz, afro, latin and broken-beat.

Invece stamattina mi ha telefonato piangente l’amico Guglielmo Mascio, annunciandomi la tua scomparsa; sono corso subito a registrare questo nastro, come tributo, testimonianza per tutti i Clubbers e DJ community..

La registrazione è del 1997 “Star Trek Night” al Mazoom – Le Plaisir Club. Ringrazio Mario Psx che mi ha recuperato il flyer originale dell’epoca!

Questo è il tuo particolarissimo sound, uno stile unico ed inconfondibile, che ti ha sempre caratterizzato e che mi ha ispirato molto. Non so quante volte avrò ascoltato questo nastro, alla disperata ricerca di un pezzo intitolato "Hot Love" ...

E' stato sempre un sogno condividere la consolle con un Big come te; a volte i sogni si avverano e anzi mai avrei immaginato, di essere invitato da te Roma a mettere vinili assieme anche a tuo figlio Gianmaria. Dutch producer and DJ Poko poko pushes an eclectic house and disco sound that oozes charisma, funk, soul, colour and good energy. Releasing on acclaimed imprints like Monologues Records, Feedasoul, House Cookin’ and Tomorrow Is Now Kid! He’s building a very impressive catalogue and a global fanbase with it.
 
His name comes from the Italian musical direction Poco a poco – ‘little by little’. “I’ve always felt strongly related to that term and used it a lot when the world around me felt like moving too fast” he says. “This project should be a life’s work and should evolve over time. Wherever it goes or takes me. No pressure, no obligations, just a way of living.” And so it has gone in his freewheeling journey as Poko poko so far, building up his production output and finding increasing success on quality house music labels, as well as some free downloads given away by the likes of Eton Messy and successful edits released to world wide acclaim.

Often to be found spreading his musical gospel in clubs in the Southern side of the Netherlands, he also sounds out musical missives from his @atmym radio show. “It can vary from long-lost funk and disco treasures to early ‘90s Chicago or acid house and from slick mid-tempo West Coast boogie and late ‘70s soul steppers to new wave or psychedelic rock and back to techno and electro again. I like catchy, snappy and quirky stuff, so if there’s a common theme which runs through my style as a DJ, it must be that.”
