Hospital Record’s soulful drum and bass aficionado Makoto is back with his seventh studio album, ‘Motion Of Change’. Following on from his popular ‘What You Need’ EP and the vibrant ‘Maybe We’ll Make It (feat. Mark Force and Archaik)’, his new album brings a blend of jungle, jazz, funk, and soul with Makoto’s signature euphoric touch. With over twenty years in the game, Makoto’s immaculate discography and signature sound have seen the Japanese born producer pave the way for liquid drum & bass all the way into 2022. A true pioneer of his craft since his Good Looking Records days of the late 90s, he’s since racked up an impressive amount of releases on Innerground, UKF, Liquid V and his very own imprint Human Elements.

More recently, Makoto’s output includes his two Hospital albums ‘Salvation’ (2017) and ‘Tomodachi Sessions’ (2019), and the hugely popular ‘What You Need’ ft Vonne selected as the first ever drum & bass track to be played on Sarah Story’s BBC Radio 1 Future Dance show, alongside support from the likes of DJ Marky, Bryan Gee, Flava D, Nu:Tone, Lenzman and more.

The motivational ‘Step Into Your Power’ features ravishing vocals from rising D+B superstar Ruth Royall. Makoto’s production skills don’t go a miss as he cooks up luscious pad hits and a booming bottom end. With the pair recently releasing the flavourful ‘New Love’ on Soulvent Records, expect good vibes galore as two of the most uplifting sound suppliers in drum & bass collide once again.

Makoto unleashes spaced out synth work, soulful guitar licks and a dynamic crescendo of instrumentation on album title track ‘Motion Of Change’ with Hospital Records’ latest signing, the immensely talented singer-songwriter, SOLAH delivering sweet melodies and majestic high notes.

Makoto travels into deeper territories on ‘Explorer’ ft Degs, as he provides grittier production complete with a moody bassline. Karina’s soothingly crafted vocals compliment the sincere violins and trademark production prowess from Makoto, making ‘Without You’ another future soulful singalong anthem.

When it comes to funkily uplifting drum 'n' bass, no-one does it like @souldnb

From the addition of live instruments to their deejay sets, to their twisting of the liquid funk formula across their discography, these guys have always brought something fresh and unexpected to the table. With releases on labels like Liquid V, Fokuz and now Four Corners, it's clear their combination of technical musicality and uncompromising party vibes are a winner.

And this is a particularly special release. As the EP title 'Friends' suggests, this one's all about collaborations, and Simple Souls clearly have some very talented mates to call on. 

Link and Jimmy Danger jump in for 'Blue Note Swing', where Jimmy's laid-back bars ride over a slick piano-led groove, interspersed with ice-cool instrumental solos. Then there's more jazz beauty to be found in the Kodan collab 'Wave' where horns lead the way and keys set the tone.

But there's even more to discover. Professor Funk laces 'Survivors' blending influences of hip-hop with atmospheric DnB, while 'Ride On' featuring MC Fedora takes us into full singalong anthem mode.

In short, this EP sounds like musicians of all kinds – producers, instrumentalists and vocalists – finding joy in the possibilities of DnB, and paying that forward to the listener and raver. These are feel good tunes by and for people who care about music, and that makes it an essential acquisition.

While Toronto has long been known for the grittier side of drum-n-bass music, the Romanian-born, classically trained Polaris brings an altogether different sound to the fore. At once melancholy and hopeful, jubilant and wistful, he has forged a musical identity that elevates drum-n-bass on a cinematic scale. After rising in the ranks of the Toronto DnB scene, he entered the global awareness in 2016 in grand fashion. His fruitful creative partnership with fellow Torontonian, Schematic, would see the release of their “NBD” on Inner City Dance, and “Please Don’t” and “Bring the Heat” on Technique Recordings, which also released his collaboration with Stranjah, “Aquarius”. Hospital Records came knocking as well, putting two Polaris tracks on their “Future Sound of Canada” EP, his goose bump-inducing stormer with Schematic, “Conduit”, and his own “The Light In Your Eyes”, which would go on to be voted one of the top ten Hospital tracks of 2016. To cap off the year, Med School included his “Found You” on their “New Blood 2016 LP”. He would link up with Schematic again on the Technique “Summer 2017” LP with “So Long”, as well as a pair of tracks in 2018, “City Life” on Inner City Dance, and “Sculpture” on Hospital’s “Sick Music 2018” LP. The label also released the majestic Polaris tune, “Blue Sky Thinking” on the “Hospitality in the Park 2018” LP, as well as two tunes for their soundtrack to the video game Forza Horizon, “Lessons Learned”, and “Empire”. Now hard at work on a solo EP, fans of lush, evocative drum-n-bass have much to anticipate in the next year and beyond.
