Following on from an ever so impressive run of artists like Carl Kennedy,
WEES and Backwall, John Dahlbacks Mutants Records
are keeping the hype rolling, launching straight into another ground
breaking sound from German triple-threat DBN.
DBN are no strangers to the electronic music scene having gained respect
from such substantial artists as Nicky Romero, Sebastian Ingrosso and
EDX along their journey. Now with the years of experience under their
belt the boys are at the top of their game, recently working alongside
Tony Romera and remixing Lost Frequencies’ smash ‘Are You With
Me?’

The latest helping from the boys sees them welcome Madita into the
studio who lays down and inspirational vocal that really takes a hold of
the breakdown sections and forms one of the key focal point of
‘Asteroid’. DBN let the monster out more so within the drop, creating a
bass line that will be stuck in your head for days after, bouncing over a
solid shuffling combo of kicks, snare and hats. The production is on
point, delivering a vast listening experience that will fit both the
underground and main stage festival scene.
On the flip comes another appearance from Mutants hottest man right
now, David Vrong, who takes a more subtle approach for his say on the
club banger. The vocal still has a dominant stance throughout, however
the support behind it comes in the form of a solid house groover that
continues to roll with simplistic pulsing bass and irresistible drums.

Following last year’s breakthrough album “Tundra”, Lakker return to R&S with a very special new project.
 
Lakker were commissioned by the RE:VIVE Initiative to create a new conceptual work solely sampling field recording, TV and radio broadcasts from the Dutch National AV archive, The Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision. The curated material provided all related to and was representative of the theme the “Dutch and water”
 
The resulting 8 track release “Struggle and Emerge” is a tense soundtrack to the machine driven mid-20th century that captures the complex relationship between the Dutch and the water that surrounds them- unyielding, colossal, industrial. 
 
Broadcasts from the flood of 1953, which claimed over 1,800 lives and decimated the southern province of Zeeland are sampled in the gloomy “Open Clouds”. The contemplative “Broken Clouds” features a radio broadcast the day after the Nazis inundated the Wieringermeer Polder in 1945 in an act of desperation before retreating.
 
In order to combat the catastrophic power of the sea Dutch engineering has needed to go to equal extremes. On the album, the propulsive and dramatic “Reclamation” blaring “Ever Rising” and pummeling “Maeslantkering Gating” capture the sheer size, scale and power that is Dutch flood protection. Lakker gained inspiration from archival footage of the closing of the 32km Afsluitdijk, a man made barrier protecting the Netherlands from the vicious North Sea, a first hand visits to the futuristic engineering marvel, Maeslantkering and the never ending challenge of keeping the sea at bay. 
 
To gain insight into their topic, Lakker ventured on a tour around the Netherlands, meeting leading academic experts in the field. From the world’s premier flood defense department at TU Delft, to a professor of amphibious culture at the Free University of Amsterdam, to art historians and specialists on the ground; the duo were given first hand insight into the centuries long tumultuous relationship between the Dutch and the water.

Five years deep into the game, all nine lives fully intact: Utrechtian feral feline Larry De Kat prowls his way onto Pets… And we really don’t need to tell you how purrrrfectly apt this debut union is. 
Fresh from launching his own Katnip imprint (and putting the final touches on a hush-hush disco edit series), Pets have managed to prise four of his finest, broadest creations from his creative claws. Each one floor-bound, each one backing up the hype he’s enjoyed from the likes of Axel Boman, Mark E and Laurent Garnier, each one making us feel like cats who got the creamiest of creams… 
‘I Know You Can Hear Me’ takes the lead on a more direct tip that you might expect from De Kat. Big pumps wrapped in a fine vibe balance of Detroit and Parisian house textures, but done with Larry’s signature dubby, jacking style, it’s the perfect paws-sitive statement of intent. 
Slinking deeper into the EP, ‘Naakte Groove’ lives up to its nude name with a lean-but-warm bass riff that purrs with finesse around a straight-up strutting drum arrangement. So much fun in such a tight, detailed groove, you’ll want this on loop forever. 
‘Amlou’ stalks up behind with dusty, thumping charm. Rolling and scratching like it was 20 years younger, there’s an innate physicality in the drums that snaps you out when the big disco hook rides in from nowhere. 
Finally we hit ‘She Doesn’t’. The dubbiest groove of the set, all eyes are on that bulbous sub, rippling synths and precision tuned snare shot. Hypnotic, heavy, unhurried and heads down… These sounds are fur real. Like all the best stray cats, expect Larry to return to Pets as and when he pleases.

While unveiling the ‘Mutant Tournament’ Quartet last year, label boss Nachtbraker was quietly hunting for new music behind the scenes. Being the fine huntsman he is, he came out of the woods with sonic bits and bobs so delectable he had no choice but to spread them out over two brand new quartets. That’s right, eight records in total, to be released over the course of the next 18 months.
We’re delighted to introduce you to Scott Franka, who’s at the helm of the first missive. This creative head from Amsterdam has been making music since the tender age of 11, but it wasn’t until he adopted his Scott Franka moniker that he really found his groove. His music encompasses influences from dub and dark techno to classic drumpcomputer and synth-heavy house. Franka’s style takes cues from Detroit, Chicago and the UK, and yet is also very personal and forward thinking at the same time. ’The Gym’ might be his solo debut, but a smattering of releases from the man is on the horizon.
The best way to introduce you to Scott Franka’s musicality is “The Gym” on A1. Starting of with sweet, melancholic chords and 808 hats Scott turns your world upside down after the first break. Try to keep your head steady, and get that dirty look of your face.. doesn’t work right? It’s just too good. “Toenail” is up next, and its undeniable groove and incredible amalgamation of synths and strings make for an absolute early hours melter. Flip over for ‘Sorry’ to hear Franka knock it out of the ballpark with its heavy breakbeat and UK-style bass. Finally, there’s ‘Street’, a mesmerising groover, rounding things off nicely.
The release doesn’t only mark its first artist EP, it also marks a new look for the label. Building on the muscular, pheromone-rich theme of the first Quartet, Elsemarijn Bruys developed a fresh concept for both new Quartets with a little help from Scott Franka, who is involved in numerous art projects in Amsterdam. And in case you’re wondering: yes, that’s an actual picture of a bodybuilder, painted from head to toe. Don’t ask us how, just marvel.
