Amateur Dance is Melbourne’s 20y/o Joseph Cookson. Fresh to the world of electronica, Cookson makes emotional, uplifting house music that belies his newcomer status. Harmonically rich & deceptively simple, Amateur Dance’s unique production pairs with engaging samples to create something that resonates on both dance floors as well as headphones.

With typical self-depreciating style comes Amateur Dance’s new EP, ‘Talking About Yourself’. The four-track release exerts a newfound confidence & finesse; with Cookson beginning to embrace his own distinctive take on house music. Rich with narrative-inducing samples, luscious pads and analogue warmth, the ‘Talking About Yourself’ EP is simplistic, encompassing and devastatingly effective.

Taking cues from the likes of Omar-S, A Guy Called Gerald & DJ Koze, Amateur Dance’s records are transparent and free of constraint – it’s simply Cookson being Cookson; embracing his inexperience to create music uniquely his own. Having already been featured on prominent online publications (Pitchfork, The Fader) off the back of his independently released ‘Keep It Up’ EP, Amateur Dance is proof you don’t necessarily need the know-how; just the guts to dive in the deep end.
