HTRK’s Ghostly International debut 'Work (work, work)' is a flat-lined study of desire and submission, sentimentality and dysphoria. The London by way of Berlin and Melbourne art-rock duo (pronounced “Hate Rock”) finished the album’s production while grieving the sudden loss of founding member and bassist Sean Stewart to suicide in March ‘10. And while that tragedy has certainly found its way into the music’s bottomless sonic void, 'Work (work, work),' written from 2006-10 in Berlin and London, is about much more than abject darkness. Much, much more.
On 'Work (work, work)', HTRK craft a stark soundscape: achingly slow 808 beats, eerie synth arpeggios, vaporous guitar noise, and Jonnine Standish’s androgynous, detached vocals, dripping with reverb. And yet it’s the careful way the pair combine those elements—organizing and juxtaposing them with a minimalist’s attention to detail—that makes their music so emotionally devastating. “Ice Eyes Eis” starts things off by enveloping you in a slippery erotic zone, in which a German sex TV babe splays herself over a molasses-slow beat and clouds of dry-ice atmosphere. The creeping “Eat Yr Heart” embodies HTRK’s touch with sonic unease, showcasing a high-pitched horror-movie synth obligato that flits like a swarm of bats around Standish’s declarations of longing (“glucose, cellulose, saccharine”/ “you fill me up then make me starve, eat yr heart”). Late-album highlight “Love Triangle” takes a more sensuous tone, describing a perfect three-person encounter (“he on she on me / she on me on he / bermuda bermuda bermuda”) over textured guitar swirls and a languorous drum-machine march.
For all of Work (work, work)’s more abrasive elements, its sense of bleakness and mourning, one finds a surprisingly romantic core. A sense of doomed melancholy, a heavy heart, lives below the layers of a murky and heavy space. HTRK’s remaining members, Jonnine Standish and guitarist Nigel Yang, sweeten their heavier sonic reference points (Pan Sonic, Suicide, et al) into songs of love and lust, creating an imaginary party record for the end of time. And what of all that “work”? In the end, HTRK’s album title seems both to refer to the tireless craft that went into its creation, as well as Standish and Yang’s endless quest to extract beauty from melancholy.

The third and final part of the "waldgeschichten" 12inch series highlights and expands upon pole´s distinctive sound, connecting to the first two parts of the trilogy in a charming way. Again a fundamental element is the very specific drum sound embedded in complex dubby structures, seamlessly unified with the warm and deep basslines.

If you have had the pleasure of listening to one of pole´s live concerts recently, then you will immediately recognize the "lurch" and "moos".


 

After the stripped down second part of the trilogy, with its wintery atmosphere, these tracks appear to be floating in melancholy. The field recordings and sounds fade away into echoes, grounded with massive bass.

 

This is a perfect conclusion to the series, offering a foretaste of the upcoming pole album.

Following on from the success of their debut LP 'La Belle Vie' from earlier this year, the French duo have been busy in the studio producing La Beat Tape. 20 tracks deep, the release is aimed squarely at the DJs, with a succession of guaranteed party-starters. This is rounded out with some typically quirky interludes, jazzy beat excursions and blissed out trip hop.
Souleance are producer Fulgeance (Musique Large / One Handed Music) and DJ Soulist (What The Funk Paris?). Since releasing their debut EP (Le Monde) back in 2009, they have built a solid reputation for their idiosyncratic take on modern beats. With fans including Gilles Peterson, Danny Breaks, Lefto and Mr Thing, their debut album was the culmination of 3 years of beat-making, touring, partying and drinking too much Pimms. Whilst other producers would rest on their laurels after releasing their debut, Souleance got straight back into the studio to produce La Beat Tape - their sole aim to create tracks that they would DJ with themselves. The result is 20 tracks of pure dancefloor fire peppered with a smattering of chilled, lounge tracks in classic Souleance style.
Like any classic beat tape, variety is the key, and Souleance do not disappoint. La Beat Tape takes in heavy Turkish breaks (Sauce Samourai), Hammond funk (L'insouleance), tripped out western cinematics (Tout Doux), brooding jazz (Kipseli Street Interlude), Shadow-esque breaks (Strongest Love), Just Blaze-style horn-heavy hip hop (Como Estan Bitches), 80s synth-hop (Cocktail Time) and much much more.
The release is available as a budget-priced download with a limited edition 7" containing four tracks that we feel will be most useful for the DJs. With artwork by long-term collaborator Alice Dufay, it's sure to join their previous vinyl releases as a genuine collectors item.

The 40th release on Balanced Records revisits the label’s early ambient directions while carving out a new sonic path forward. Swedish sound designer, Skyscaper (not to be confused with skyscraper) creates layered and textured soundscapes in Noctilucent Clouds that are clearly matched to the spatial and atmospheric themes he explores as an artist. Label manager Kasm takes the title track to new depths with gorgeous melodic sketches, abstract beats and the rich distinctive vocals of SuhniSea. Geocorona offers a minimal dubby techno feel with subtle, punctuated percussive flares overtop cosmic background noise.

Anders Peterson is a sound designer, composer and audio postproduction engineer, who runs GS Mastering & Post, providing audio post solutions. He also runs a small label called Ghost Sounds, and records music under a couple of different aliases, Skyscaper being one of them.

Since 1995, Kasm has covered the spectrum of breakbeat and bass influenced music from drum & bass, downtempo, afrobeat, dub, broken beat and future bass styles. As one of the original founders of Balanced and current label manager, Kasm has been integral to the label's growth and identity both on the international stage and with cultivating artists from the flatlands. He also co-hosts Quadrafunk, Winnipeg’s longest running DJ show on CKUW which has been on the airwaves since 1999 and is an Artistic Director of the Manitoba Electronic Music Exhibition.

UK based SuhniSea is a music aficionado with an encyclopedic knowledge and radar for the freshest sounds. Her roots as a jazz, hip hop and soul radio show host and DJ gradually extend her selections to include electronic, house and bass music. With over ten years in radio production, including her nationally acclaimed show Mic Check, at CKUW (ckuw.ca) she’s also noted as a music reviewer and writer.
