On the 23rd of June, following months of increasing tension between the Wagner Group and the Russian Ministry of Defence, Yevgeny Prigozhin launched his rebellion. Prigozhin's forces quickly took control of the head quarter's of Russia's Southern Military District in the city of Rostov-on-Don, after which an armoured column of Wagner troops advanced towards Moscow.

In today's episode of Interregnum I asked Richard Seymour about Prighozin's background in crime and his early business ventures, the founding of the Wagner Group, the scope of its operations and its reputation for appalling violence. And we also talked about why Richard thinks Prighozin can accurately be described as a fascist. Finally, Richard addressed the claim, made by some analysts that the abortive rebellion actually leaves Putin in a stronger position.

Interregnum - The meaning of Prigozhin's rebellion

Passionate about electronic music from an early age, by setting foot in a famous record store of the time, Diki Records (Mouscon), fell directly in love; to the point of becoming a vinyl addict then fascinated by the scene and the underground universe by the Belgian clubs Fuse (Brussels), Silo (Leuven) or Decadance (Ghent) made him want to perform on stage in a dj set, first performance in 2009.

His way of doing is to find a compromise between groove, deep and hypnotic so that it shakes a minimum while traveling. He draws his inspiration from artists such as Mathias Kaden - Paco Osuna - Marco Carola - Raresh - Mathew Jonson - Raudive - Ricardo Villalobos - Damian Schwartz - Tadeo - Alex Under - Mr G (Colin McBean) - ZIP and many others.

Richard Seymour returns to PTO to discuss the crisis and background to the crisis in Israel-Palestine. A little over a week ago US national security advisor Jake Sullivan, speaking at the the Atlantic festival, rattled off a list of positive developments in the Middle East which he argued had allowed the Biden administration to focus on issues elsewhere in the world. Referencing the truce in Yemen, a decline in hostility in the US's relationship with Iran and what he characterised as America's stable presence in Iraq - where around 2,500 US soldiers remain - he commented that “The Middle East region is quieter today than it has been in two decades.”

On Saturday Sullivan's comments came back to haunt him as Hamas carried out an unprecedentedly large scale breakout from the Gaza strip and launched attacks on the Israeli military and Israeli civilians that have claimed over 1200 lives at the time of recording. Deaths on the Palestinian side from Israel's predictable assault on Gaza are heading towards parity, and undoubtedly those numbers will escalate dramatically as Israel continues its air campaign and prepares to launch a ground assault. The following interview with Richard Seymour was recorded earlier today - the 11th of October - and before it became apparent that a national unity government would be formed in Israel.

Interregnum - The Israel-Hamas conflict

Lara Friedman, President of the Foundation for Middle East Peace joins PTO to discuss the dire situation in Gaza and the West Bank, and the dramatic escalation of islamophobia and anti-Arab racism in the United States. In the second half of the episode, international security expert Paul Rogers joins the show again to talk about how Israel is likely to approach its attempt to destroy Hamas, and the risks of regional escalation.

Palestinian writer Amjad Iraqi joins the show to talk about where Israel's assault on Gaza is going. We talked about Israel's professed goal to wipe out Hamas in the Gaza strip and what Israel intends to do with the territory and its population after the end of Operation Iron Swords. We also discussed how seriously to take the statements of Western governments who profess to support a viable Palestinian state alongside Israel, and we spoke about how liberal Zionism is a phenomenon that exists more in the minds of western policy makers, and liberal journalists, than it does in Israel itself.

At Well is the teaser single for All Is Well’s upcoming debut album “A Break In Time”. (out: 24/11/2023)

Inspired by Carl Craig’s At Les, hence the title At Well, the track draws influence not only from Carl Craig’s early albums (More Songs About Food and Revolutionary Art and Landcruising), but also the early 90s Warp sound (e.g. the Artificial Intelligence compilations). It’s definitely a nostalgia piece. The original album version is accompanied by the two DJ-friendly Night Versions for the clubs and features live strings arrangement played by Pete Whitfield. This was a highlight moment during All Is Well’s live performance of the album at Mutek festival in 2021.

A Break In Time

A Break In Time is an ambient album written during the lockdown as a sort of calming therapy / meditation exercise. The project quickly took form with a unique sonic identity and message inspired by this feeling isolation felt during that time. The album is about fragility, naivety, contemplating our vulnerability but also of our resilience and the feeling of alone/together.

This album might have taken less than a year to make, but it’s a culmination of influences drawing back to his early 90s growing up in Québec City. He was then known simply as Everything, performing live in Raves and Chill Out Room, armed with nothing but a 909, an SH-101 an Ensoniq EPS and a Quadraverb. His love for ambient music never faded. With early influences such as Carl Craig seminal “Landcruising”, Warp’s “Artificial Intelligence” and Black Dog Production “Bytes”, this album bridges the gap between here and there, now and then : where time stands still.
This is a collaborative release from Compost Records and Drumpoet Community.

Since TONE dropped his debut album last year ‘So I Can See You’ on Rhythm Section INTL to prominent acclaim, he has entasked his musical community to remix the album - namely members of the CURL collective. Formed in 2016 by Micachu, Coby Sey, and Brother May, they have performed together and released compilations from the likes of Lol K, Bianca Scout, Raisa K and others, who all feature on the remix album. As the version LP has taken fruition, Tone has played SXSW, Cafe OTO and 180 Strand, and simultaneously continuing his journey as a hard-working family man. 

TONE’s debut was filled with an ariose spoken singing style, post-punk tones and a back-to-basics production style courtesy of his 8-track tape machine - perfect elements for any remixer. With no specific brief, artists indulged in their specific visions. Trevor Jackson’s industrial dub aesthetic is brought to ‘Move Now’, his first remix since working for deftones’ ‘White Pony’ deluxe reissue in 2020. Stay Lo contributes a tribute to the early 10s ‘dreamstep’ with tik-tok friendly ‘In & Out’ remix and meditative chug from ‘So I Can See You Pt. 2’ by Coby Sey and Tone himself. 

The ‘So I Can See You’ LP represented cause and effect between his relationship with his own creativity and the emergence of his daughter, from pregnancy and beyond, and thus the remix LP explores the wider sonic variety of Tone and his musical compatriots.
