Getting behind the decks is an act of empowerment. Both in the message it carries and in the people who convey it. This is what @steiner0 stands for with her energetic, cathartic music, in which she offers an escape from the violence of everyday life. A fervent activist, she cannot imagine any music that is not political. Simply because declaring oneself "apolitical" already constitutes a political position, often associated with privileges. Steiner knows and feels every day that she evolves in an environment still largely dominated by people assigned male at birth, white, able-bodied, thin and heterosexual. Although the environment is changing, there is still a lot of progress to be made. And to fight this battle, you need strength. That's the motto she had when recording this mix that will make you want to smash everything, or at least capitalism and patriarchy.

We are very happy to introduce @steiner0 as part of our podcast series with our personal interview and a hot mix. TY <3

• How did you get into DJing?
There are 3 moments that really clicked: the first was when my friend and DJ Fazee asked me what emotion I wanted to express when preparing a mix. For the first time, I was introduced to music via something other than technique (and mansplaining). The 2nd was when I started breaking down the elements of a track, allowing myself to explore this art. The 3rd was when I played for the first time in front of my friends. realising that I already had a pretty clear idea of the energy I wanted to convey. The last two were on psychedelics. Taken when I'm feeling good and with a clear intention, they have really helped me to overcome creative blockages.
• Where do you get inspirations?
I like to explore in a broad way, without limiting myself to one musical genre. What counts for me is the energy of a track, and how it sticks to my intention. I like looking at sets on Youtube, going through other people's buy lists on Bandcamp, watching other's artists tracklists. I never hesitate to ask for a track id. I also have a small job in a club here in Leipzig, as part of the mjut's awareness team. This exposes me to a lot of music that I might not have discovered on my own. My daily job has a sex & relationship therapist is also inspiring me. Music is a tool for getting messages across. It's a good thing I've got a lot of it!
• Where do you prefer to DJ or to make music in general?
I always feel much more comfortable in small room than in big ones, and I like being on the same level as the crowd. Being perched on a stage, with lots of lights, makes me quite uncomfortable and prevents me from feeling the vibe on the dancefloor. And the icing on the cake is when my friends are on the front line! I can feel pretty anxious, and seeing familiar faces reassures me.

• Did you have any specific thoughts about your podcast?
It's an opening set that I played at Kulturlounge last week, for the Technose collective. It was a challenge for me because I play pretty angry stuff and tend to get the peak time or closing timeslots. Setting up the mood, starting from nothing is quite challenging. I explored quite a few genres, like neoperreo and psytrance, with the kind of hard-hitting techno I cherish. Music really is a cathartic tool for me, especially when it comes to anger. It's an emotion that for a long time I considered negative, not to be expressed, even more so when you've been socialized and perceived as a woman. With my music, I explore the joy and sexiness of anger, how it unites us and how it has a healing power. It allows be to be calmer in the everyday life. 
• What would you like to change in the music scene if you could?
We need to facilitate access to DJing and production for people who are minorized in the sector: in other words, everyone except able-bodied white cis heterosexual men with money. It's all very well to say that we need diversified line-ups, but without the possibility of practising on professional equipment, we won't make it. It creates a gap. That's why we started the DJ workshops for FLINTA* and BIPOC people with my friends Two Dots. But we need more of them, everywhere. Another crucial thing is to train the staff and to hire an awareness team in order to make the club a safer space for the public, the artists and the workers.
• What was your first record?
Not a record but the 1st track I bought is Sin (Original Mix) from Rem Siman.
• What memories do you have of your music lessons? Would your
teachers consider you in the music/ club industry today? 
It was hell! I couldn't plug the holes in my flute and I found having to sing alone in front of everyone very distressing! The songs we were learning were just as boring (and problematic). I hated it so much that I did everything I could to be forgotten and I don't think any of the teachers remember me.

Bitter Babe's curation for Rhythmic Culture sets a variety of South American artists in the limelight. For her second instalment, she picked the Toronto-based DJ, producer and curator Ana Luisa from Caracas, Venezuela for our podcast series. Her selection and productions are eclectic, not bound by genre, and mostly influenced by Latin American rhythms and experimental club sounds. Her music has been released on Caballito Netlabel, NAAFI, Jupiter4 and Deprerreo. She is the co-founder of Toronto-based club night Veneno and a resident on ISO Radio where she hosts Dimensión Ideal: a monthly show highlighting peripheral and experimental Latin American electronic music.

Bitter Babe: "Ana Luisa is part of the Latin American diaspora, from Venezuela based in Canada. In my opinion one of the most exciting DJs to hear for Latin club music, and now making her own productions. Slowly but steady positioning as one of the upcoming artist to watch closely."

Sex & Relationship Therapist by day, Steiner gets behind the decks by night, using music as a cathartic and activist tool.
After sanding the dance floors of Lyon and Paris, Steiner moved to Berlin and finally settled in Leipzig. She joined the Kiebitz collective, and pressed the "play" button for the first time in 2022. She develops a wide musical universe, being particularly fond of techno, whether acid, hard, bouncy, industrial or rave, and takes great pleasure in adding touches of hardstyle, latinxcore, trance or psytrance. Her sets are marked by a clever mix of tension and musical slaps, leaving little respite to her audience.
Last but not least, Steiner is co-hosting DJ workshops for FLINTA & BIPoC with the producer and DJ Two Dots, and fights to make clubs safer places for all, being part of awareness teams and hosting workshops about consent & boundaries.

Your genre/sound
I like to mix and explore genres and defining myself in a single one is complicated. I would say I evolve between trance, whether bouncy or hard, techno, from acid, rave, hard and sometimes psy trance, Latin club/core/trance. 

Where are you from?
I was born in Geneva, Switzerland, but grew up in France, on the Swiss border and near Paris.

How long have you been DJing?
-Since the beginning of 2022

How has your journey been so far?
As many other FLINTA*, I started my journey with a huge imposture syndrome. Between the moment I bought a controller, and the first time I play there were 2 years, with barely no practice. But with time, and the support of some DJ friends who unravel DJing bit by bit, I got out of this frozen and self-judgmental mode. The unblocking was accelerated by a psychedelic trip, with the intention to do so. I started to play with @twodotz. He really support me in exploring my own universe and to trust myself. I joined the Kiebitz collective and it helped me to have a group of supporting friends, and occasions to play at private parties at the beginning.
Early on, I recorded and posted my mixes on my Soundcloud. I sent it to venues and collectives I liked. I'm not going to lie, most of them ignored me. But I didn't give up and kept on doing it until someone trusted me. I got booked for a queer party serie called No No No!. I was very stressed because it was my debut in a club and this one was Distillery, one of the biggest venues in Leipzig! And then, I got booked at this party serie again, and other bookers started to reach out. But it was and is still the result of hard work over the long term. Since then, I've been booked in venues in Leipzig such as Institut für Zukunft, Elipamanoke, mjut, but also in Berlin at Mensch Meier, Club Ost or in Paris at À La Folie. I would love to say it was all a 
If my musical journey evolves through time, it's always with the same goal to express an emotion. It's dominated by anger, as it's an emotion i struggle for a while to feel and to externalize.  But lately, I've also been exploring some lighter mood, more bouncy and let's see what's gonna come in the future!
I'm co-hosting Dj workshops for FLINTA* and BIPOC people only, with Two Dots. I would never have taken the plunge if I hadn't attended a workshop for FLINTA. It's important for me to share and pass on, to help other people in the club scene overcome their own hang-ups, and to practice on the club equipment.
I'd like to tell you that everything has always gone smoothly, but that's not true. I've had a lot of inappropriate comments and criticisms, whether about my music, my technique, my looks, or my political stances. It's a bumpy road where people don't do you any favours, but as long as I feel the joy of playing and as long as I take the audience with me, I'll carry on.  

What is important to you in a Safer Space?
- That no place nor person are 100% safe and it's crucial that we all reflect on our behaviours and privileges. It's an individual AND a collective effort.

Anything else you would like to say or share with the world?
- Music is political and will always be.
