"TOPLAP DÜSSELDORF is a group of artists that has existed since 2018 to explore and promote live coding. In order to make this increasingly popular technique of composing and performing electronic music more widely known, the group is releasing with _EXECUTE Vol. 1 the works of Düsseldorf artists together with the works of the international live coding scene as a compilation for the first time.

In their performances, live coders reveal the inner workings of software, manipulate it directly in the source code, and in the process improvise to create music or moving images. The process of programming is made visible to the audience through a projection of the computer screen. Live coding works in all music genres and is shown in many livestreams and all over the world in concert halls, clubs and on so-called algoraves.

What is unique about live coding is the combination of cool computer science, strictly rule-based and merciless in its treatment of errors, with musical improvisation, which is usually free and open to deviations from the usual. In this way, the live coders fill the sobriety of programming with aesthetic life, making the hidden beauty of code audible and visible to connoisseurs and lay listeners and viewers."

Wir sprechen. Aber was tun wir, wenn wir sprechen? Drücken wir unser Inneres aus? Wenden wir ein äußeres Sprachsystem an? Sprechen ist eine materielle Praxis, sie ist an Töne, an den Körper und häufig an Medien gebunden. Unser Sprechen ist Teil unserer täglichen Praktiken, ohne zu sprechen, könnten wir diese gar nicht ausführen. In der kritischen Gesellschaftstheorie wurde von den einen vertreten, dass die Sprache auf Verständigung zielt, demnach können wir alle die Sprache wie einen gemeinsamen Schatz verwenden. Andere vertraten die Ansicht, dass jede Klasse eine eigene Sprache ausbildet, die Beherrschten hätten dann keine Sprache, in der sie sich über ihre Freiheitsbestrebungen verständigen könnten. Vološinovs Buch ist ein wichtiger Beitrag, der im Zusammenhang des legendären Bachtin-Kreises in den 1920er Jahren in Leningrad entstanden ist. Ihm zufolge besteht die Sprache aus Zeichen, Zeichen sind ideologisches Material. Wir verstehen Zeichen, indem wir Zeichen auf andere Zeichen beziehen. Wörter sind Zeichen par excellence. Das Reden findet zeichenhaft statt, mit der Äußerung von Wörtern beziehen wir uns immer dialogisch auf andere und geben ihnen überkreuzte Bedeutungen. Wir nehmen die Zeichen als innere Rede in unser Bewusstsein hinein, das sich dadurch überhaupt erst bildet und aus Zeichen besteht. Der Klassenkampf findet im Inneren des Zeichenmaterials statt und wird um die Bedeutungen der Zeichen geführt.

“I am thrilled to engage with my peers, knowledge and cultural producers, students, and especially fallists as a part of Donna Kukama’s ‘The Free School For Art and Other Necessary ‘Fings (Until Fees Fall)*’. There has been a lot said about WHY decolonization is necessary, and it is time to start imagining and fashioning the HOW, practically. This is necessary, especially bearing in mind the existing dominant culture and a call for the recovery of lost and fading knowledge systems. ‘The Free School for Art and Other Necessary ‘Fings’ forms part of a series of important interventions that have taken place in support of the #FeesMustFall Movement. Aside from my support of the movement as a human being and activist, I have been particularly impressed with the call for decolononized education.
 
I am even more excited about the conversation in the second part of the program where I will be engaging with my father, an artist who has had a profound impact on my outlook and practice as an artist. I was introduced to African literature in his study. He has always worked in Sepedi and English. My favourite work of his is the bilingual Sepedi Idioms published in 2004 and the staffrider stuff of course!

He comes from a different generation. Growing up, he was surrounded by his language, so he has complete access to his traditional archive. This is unlike our generation, which is in a process of rehabilitating that access. I am interested in how we can use generational knowledge to Recolonize, in the quest of decolonizing.” - Masello Motana.

*The Free School for Art and Other Necessary 'Fings is a virus that will pop up in various locations, carried by different bodies, with the aim to spread until there is free quality decolonized education in our lifetime. It was established by Donna Kukama in 2016.

The Free School for Art and other Necessary Fings: MAROPENG with Masello Motana and Nape Motana

Velkommen til en ny samtale i serien av tankegods-kvelder, hvor vi presenterer og diskuterer arbeidet til sentrale og toneangivende teoretikere, filosofer og forfattere. Denne gangen skal det handle om den russiske filosofen og litteraturviteren Mikhail M. Bakhtin.

I panelet: 

OLA HARSTAD – stipendiat ved Institutt for lærerutdanning / Institutt for pedagogikk og livslang læring (NTNU). Han arbeider med en ph.d.-avhandling i krysningspunktet mellom litteraturdidaktikk og pedagogisk filosofi. 

ATLE SKAFTUN – professor i lesevitenskap ved Lesesenteret (Universitetet i Stavanger). Han er dr.art fra Universitet i Tromsø, hvor han disputerte i 2002 med en avhandling i nordisk litteraturvitenskap om Knut Hamsuns dialogiske realisme. Skaftun har skrevet en rekke artikler og bøker om litteratur og lesing, ofte med utgangspunkt i Bakhtins dialogisme.

Samtalen ledes av Sindre Dagsland, stipendiat ved Institutt for lærerutdanning / Institutt for språk og litteratur (NTNU). Han har nettopp sendt inn en doktoravhandling i anvendt språkvitenskap hvor Bakhtin er et viktig teoretisk utgangspunkt. Dagsland spiller også i bandet Bakhtinians, som bruker Bakhtins begrep flerstemmighet som konseptuelt utgangspunkt for musikk-, litteratur- og kunstprosjekter.
