Composed for soloist Ittai Shapira, the concerto reflects on the devastation of New Orleans and the musical communities of the Delta, five years later.

you must learn to ride, to work with foreign species, to insert your will into every fork and plate and pan you cook with until the food is an extension of the hands that prepared it and the brain that dreamed it.
you must learn to score thick paper and fold it into designs.
you must learn to squeeze lemons into smiling forces that sputter up.
that’s the important thing, that’s how this piece was written, that’s how your beast/trained or confined/can run

As the doctor held the fragile, bloody bundle, the family shared smiles round the hospital bed. The doctor, puzzled by the solitude this little thing possessed, inspected it closer, then whispered something in the ear of the proud man standing by. The man, ever so gently, took the swaddled thing from the doctor, and, just to be sure himself, took another peek under the white blanket, barely able to contain himself. "It's... It's a band!"
