Memory Tapes - 03 - Green Knight

After blazing out of Bushwick in 2011 with the two buzz-worthy singles, “I’m His Girl” and “Friend Crush”, a reputation for turning live gigs into spontaneous DIY parties (and vice versa), and a bio built to withstand the most cynical indie-blog cred-vetting – Brooklyn’s Friends will release their debut album Manifest!, June 4th on Lucky Number (World excl US) and June 5th on Fat Possum (US).

Produced by the band – singer Samantha Urbani; multi-instrumentalists Lesley Hann, Matthew Molnar, and Nikki Shapiro; and drummer Oliver Duncan –its twelve tracks were recorded between last summer and this spring with engineer Daniel Schlett at Strange Weather studios in Brooklyn.

Full track-listing and more details are forthcoming but, for now, as a further provocative taster we are delighted to present the anthemic “Mind Control”, which is to be the band’s next single and the album’s climax. 

Mixed by Paul Epworth, it sums up the seditious streak of Manifest!  The musical choices are brazen even by Friends’ standards: superfly bass, slinky synth, crybaby wah, bongo solo, group chants.  Lyrically, it also might be the Friends manifesto, were it not for the strong possibility that Ms. Urbani is taking the piss, poking a bit of good-natured fun at her band's 'indie' image and at our expectations of it.

Noah, is a Nagoya-based female artist, whose popular works include her winning piece in Cokiyu’s “Your Thorn Remixes”.

Sela., is a 19 years old young producer that hails from California, US, who is known for his excellent production work for Kitty (Kitty Pryde), the 17 years old tumblr-wave rapper.

When Noah and Sela., these 2 talented young artists crossed path at flau label, this impressive split ep was born.

In this brilliant split , Noah constructed her own musical world by infusing the wonderful elements of R&B, Trip-Hop, electronic into the classical music she learned from her formal music education, with feathery voices, beautiful chorus, and charming piano touches painting the backdrop.
On the other side, the young Sela. boldly adopted the approach to deconstruct Hip-Hop/R&B music into simplest loops, and gracefully steering these loops to create his distinctive minimal ambient and imaginative night music.

Welcome to the new world created by these 2 amazingly talented young artists Noah and Sela., a world where construction and deconstruction occurred, a world where mellow downtempo music is tastefully conceived.

Coastal Cities have announced the release of their double A side single ‘Entropic / Nothing Ever Changes’, released through Once Upon A Time Records. This young 5 piece - who boast a sound fuelled by jagged funked-up guitars, 80's tinged keyboard riffs and youthful summer vibes - will see the follow up to last year’s ‘Relief / The Voyage’ single released on 3rd June 2013. Their previous releases saw them gain some impressive radio airplay, with Huw Stephens, Nick Grimshaw, Jen Long, Rob Da Bank, Steve Lamacq, Chris Hawkins, Danielle Perry to name just a few, having spun their work. And now fresh out of college, with this new single, Coastal Cities are bound to impress further as they take another step into the world armed with their own individual take on UK indie.
 
‘Entropic’, a track which has summer vibes pumping through its veins, was produced by Hugh Worskett (Delphic) and mixed by Adrian Bushby (The Rapture, Two Door Cinema Club). The song is about making the most of life whilst you can, and there is every chance this hook filled single will allow Coastal Cities to do exactly that. ‘Nothing Ever Changes’, also produced by Worksett, is about the anticipation of waiting for something to happen which takes you by surprise, but until then everything just staying the same. Both tracks are extremely impressive efforts, boasting a mature sound, years older than they are, with a dose of their youth adding a freshness and originality.
 
Last year saw them play the Kitsune night at Les Inrocks Festival in Paris and 1,2,3,4 in London and this April Coastal Cities will be performing a handful of shows in and around London with more to be announced to promote the release of ‘Entropic / Nothing Ever Changes’.
