Germany’s Tilman inaugurates his new imprint Pleasant Systems this June with the ‘Adventures’ EP, featuring collaborations with Will Buck and Rhode & Brown.

Mainz, Germany based producer and DJ Tilman has been dropping his twist on contemporary house over the past decade on labels such as Shall Not Fade, Life Is For Living and Quality Vibes as well as his own Fine imprint, run in collaboration with Johannes Albert. Here though, Tilman marks a new beginning with the launch of Pleasant Systems, a new imprint designed to shine a light on vintage inspired house sounds from both himself and friends.

Up first is ‘What’s Mine Is Mine’, a collaboration with Brooklyn’s Will Buck which lays down an amalgamation of airy synth pads, choppy bass stabs, bright piano lines and enchanting flute like melodies atop a swinging drum groove. ‘Strawberry Fields’ follows, stripping things back to shuffled percussion, billowing ethereal textures and wandering sub bass tones while fluttering brass tones and resonant leads ebb and flow within.

‘Velvet Park’ opens the flip side, this time joining forces with Rhode & Brown, embracing a classic sound with raw crunchy drums, delayed piano chords, bumpy bass stabs, cinematic strings and brass hooks throughout. ‘Lovin'’ then rounds out the release, dropping the tempo, featuring the voice of Tilman himself and laying focus on off-kilter organic percussion, twinkling resonant tones, eighties tinged synth chords and g funk moog style bass to perfectly conclude Pleasant System’s debut...

This EP was a long time in the making. The last project completed at my Studio in Detroit before moving to NY a year ago with brother Javonntte - someone I love and respect endlessly. We laid everything down over the course of four days. We played drums together, we had homies in the studio getting down with us while ad libbing parts (you can even hear them in the background if you listen carefully). We ended up with a ton of content that I whittled down, arranged, mixed, edited, and mastered into this. The iconic Delano Smith filled in on remix duties for what was originally slated to be Mike Huckaby who had agreed to do this project just a month before his passing. Del did it justice. The stems were passed back, I mixed it down with extra moody flavor and we agreed it was perfect. I hope you all enjoy this as much as I did making it. I love you Huck and I love you Eric and I'm sorry you guys couldn't see the end result.

The established heavy hitting outfit, Nicepeople, kick things off for 2022 in true style. Dropping early next year is their latest slice of house heaven, the package comes in the shape of three originals from Gourment De Funk, and a nostalgic "Chicago Boogie'' trip with the legendary Roy Davis Jr. Sounds good already, right?

Title track "A Love Supreme" initiates proceedings on the A side, slick percussion teases you into a journey of funk bliss, warm and infectious bass taking you on a cruise, with feel good strings all working in sweet harmony to make this a must have record. On a more driven tip is "The Way You Move" another animated groove experience, and boasts some smooth sax action for the fans amongst us.

Roy Davis Jr’s "Chicago Boogie" remix of "The Way You Move" is an upbeat number for the peak time dance floors out there. The irresistible bass totally takes over your movements, you can not help but to move to a track like this, the veteran producer certainly not letting us down with this one, fitting the ethos of the label, and yet crammed with the signature sound we have all come to adore from Roy over the years. Closing off the EP is the "Never Lost (GDF Morning Dub)" seductive deep house for the early morning dancers. Crisp hi-hats brushing by as you feel yourself swallowed up into the clouds. One for the dreamers.

Nicepeople never seem to take the pedal off the gas, consistently pushing their brand and propelling top shelf house music from an array of inspiring producers of old and new, and they begin next year exactly as they mean to go on.

Germany is not known for soul music, but some of the hottest disco artists of the 1970ies and 80ies were based in Germany. To be more precise, in Munich. Donna Summer, Moroder, Faltermeyer, Boney M or Silver Convention who created the „string disco sound“ came from Munich’s wild disco scene in the 1970ies. And that's the vibe you get with the new GOME guys. The 25 years old guys originally come from Munich. They have the Munich disco DNA. Which means: They feel the funk, they know about Soul music and good bass lines, they know how to groove (not to bang) and they have that slight sense of irony and easiness you need to make good disco music. (Some say the dark days of Berlin techno are over after Covid, Munich disco is the opposite.)

GOME are a live act. Their disco is played on several drum machines, keyboards, sequencers and microphone. (Check their live on Insta). Their first EP got massive props from the likes of Laurent Garnier („Love love love for this EP“) and other more funk oriented house DJs.

The new one goes further. It's 80ies disco. The first track „Teach you“ was produced in the raw style of early Prince or the legendary Sexual Harrassment. A pumping bass line, driving 808 beats and funky rap vocals is the only thing you need. Erobique, King of German disco and member of the band International Pony (DJ Koze & Cosmic DJ) did a stripped down remix showing that less is more.

Detroit's https://soundcloud.com/pontchartrain takes the Razor-N-Tape reigns for his debut on the label - an all-cylinders-firing jazz laden, deep house EP with an exquisite https://soundcloud.com/demuja remix.

The A side kicks off with 'The Friends & Lovers Dub' version of the title track 'Love Is Madness', filled with deep pulsing pads, resonating dashes of sax, crisp percussion and a bumping bassline that provides the perfect backdrop to the echoing mantra of 'Friends... Lovers'. 

Next 'I-80' is a wonder of shimmering arps, brooding bass tones and reverberating trumpet touches. Perfect for the early hours, entrancing dancers as it washes over the airwaves. 

On the flip, Austria's golden boy Demuja hits hard with a Kerri Chandler channeling deep house remix of 'Love Is Madness', centred around a pumping bass synth, sustained organs and a classic marriage of horn stabs and emotive spoken word.

Love Is Madness EP

Pontchartrain - Love Is Madness (The Friends & Lovers Dub)

For the last 12 years, the way that Detroit-based DJ Pontchartrain has approached music, is centered around two things - learning and sharing. The result has been an interesting change up from the status quo of what comes out of the motor city. Heavily funk-infused and sample-laden original productions, edits and reworks that border on brand new versions of the track, and sets that string together a wide array of sounds that all center around the idea that dancing and feeling music are the main goals.
 
What started off as a project for edits and DJ tools has turned into a rediscovery of the roots of dance music. This shift in the last few years has pushed him into the new opportunities with some of the greatest labels in disco and house realm, and interesting achievements across the globe.
 
Currently he serves as A&R for one of the most prominent edits labels in the world, Whiskey Disco, and for the house subsidiary, Lovedancing. In addition to curating these two outlets and putting out his own records on them as well, in the past few years alone he has released on over a dozen labels, including Kolour LTD, Rocksteady Disco, Delusions of Grandeur, Toy-Tonics, Soul-Clap Records, Masterworks Music and more. Output has been nothing short of consistent, hitting #1 chart positions on sites such as Juno, several times.
 
Wen it comes to performances Pontchartrain believes in the overarching goal of making people dance, and think in equal parts. From the time he brought the Detroit Children’s Choir on stage with him at Movement Festival to sing along, to the bold invocations of poetry and messages of love, the dancefloor is a temple when he’s on deck. A place to worship each other and the feeling of letting loose. Whatever sounds get you there; genre is second to the emotion.
 
Like many of the great Detroit artists he looks up to, there’s a humble blue collar aspect to his background as well. Pontch still works as a social worker directly with drug addicts getting back on their feet right here in the motor city. He volunteers with groups such as Give A Beat, LRNG, Girls Rock Detroit, local public libraries, and is now a volunteer and teacher at Spin Inc music production school. Music is truly a way of life, part of the greater idea of lifting each other up. His actions, sounds, and personality encompass this idea.
