Bursts of the Million

Chicago’s analog synth melting psych-pop artist Oscillator Bug is like a force of nature in the age of climate change: unpredictable. Borrowing from the revolution-minded mass hallucinations of 60s psych as well as weirdo bedroom pop and several decades worth of avant-garde synth experimentalism, Oscillator Bug is a wild, infectious and occasionally disturbing rendering of 21st Century popular music. 

Oscillator Bug’s Zaid Maxwell has been making music in the Windy City for several years, playing in and recording various bands. While currently playing in a couple of more explorative and caustic outfits, Maxwell was compelled to extract these 10 auditory earwigs of pop goo that had taken roost in his brain. The resulting Bursts of the Million is tunefully fun and twisted Candyland passage through someone else’s fever dream that pulls listeners ever-inward. 

Album opener “Enavasion” kicks things off with one of the more jagged tunes, reminiscent of Ween’s finest post-funk colliding with early Devo and driven by Maxwell’s jaw-dropping falsetto vocal acrobatics. The title track pits a delicate lullaby vocal melody over a Suicide-style organ rhythm loop. Elsewhere, the hook-laden “Feel Rif” sounds like a frenzied march of warbling synth creatures and guitars that Maxwell tries desperately to keep under control, like the Sorcerer’s Apprentice, singing in alternating falsetto and baritone as a shimmering melody leads into a cathartic eruption of electro-euphoria reminiscent of Of Montreal’s glammy artrock. Other tracks like “Glimmy Gloe” and “Don’t Go To Sleep“ further emphasize the album’s primal, hallucinatory glory. At times it’s like “Raspberry Beret” era Prince gone lo-fi, other times a Tangerine Dream nightmare, and elsewhere a godhead rendering of Future Islands in the sky with John Lennon. Point being: buy the ticket, and take this ride.

Founded by sonic architect and explorer Robert Raths aka ghostworker in 2007, Erased Tapes is a truly independent record label that has disrupted the industry and rejuvenated the musical landscape. The London-based label has consistently nurtured genre-defying artists from all around the world without losing its avant-garde ethos.

2015 saw BBC 6 Music radio presenter Mary Anne Hobbs stage an Erased Tapes evening featuring Nils Frahm and A Winged Victory For The Sullen at the Royal Albert Hall as part of the prestigious BBC Prom. It was the fastest selling ticket of the entire season. Shortly after Erased Tapes was awarded Best Small Label 2015 at the AIM Awards.

On February 5th 2017 Erased Tapes opened the doors to its new East London home, marking the 10th anniversary by introducing fans and the public to the new Erased Tapes Sound Gallery.

Ten and Tracer is Jonathan Canupp. He was born in Boulder, Colorado a while ago. Some rappers say they were born with a microphone in their hand; Jonathan was born with a Macbook, Vaio, Roland JP-8000, Roland JX-10, Electrix FX units, Roland MKS-100, Yamaha FB-01, Violin, Flute, Cello, Minidisk recorder, several vintage reel-to-reels (Sony, Grundig), several cassette and micro-cassette recorders, Reaktor, Max/Msp, Ableton Live, FL Studio, and Adobe Audition in his hand(s). He has many hands.



Ten and Tracer has released on many labels, including U-Cover, Rope Swing Cities, Bitlab, Archipel, Zymogen, 8bitpeoples, and others. He has supported and headlined with such acts as Thomas Fehlman, Proem, Lusine, Kangding Ray, Sawako, Terminal 11 and CDatakill. Have you heard of these people? His most recent shows in 2007 and 2008 have earned him a growing reputation in Colorado. He has also played in shows in Belgium, France, Germany and Holland. Have you heard of these places?

Ten and Tracer once had a Wikipedia article about him, but he encouraged people to vandalize it and now it has been removed. Ten and Tracer has more than one-thousand friends.

Ten and Tracer lives in Denver, Colorado. Ten and Tracer says “Thanks to everyone for your support and interest. We are friends now.” 

Ten and Tracer is also known as Jean-Pierre Courvoisier, 1/2 of the techno super-group Les Freres Courvoisier (with Joshua Smith aka Time for Trees).  He also collaborates with Milieu under the moniker Waterstrider.  And has a little known project with Able in the works called Sonnen Kanu.
