Rudy De Anda, frontman for Long Beach psych-prog group Wild Pack of Canaries, is writing and recording his own songs for an upcoming vinyl on Porch Party Records- a 5-song EP titled Ostranenie recorded with Isaiah "Ikey" Owens and will be released in May 2015. 

Rudy is backed by drummer Zach Mabry (Forest of Tongue), bassist Lily Stretz (Meow Twins), and multi-instrumentalist J.P. Bendzinski (Crystal Antlers, De Lux) who is also recording and mixing the upcoming Rudy De Anda Winter 2015 full-length album.

"Dustin Lovelis’ songwriting chops and ’60s and ’70s pop sensibilities shone on the two albums and an EP released by the Long Beach quintet he fronted, the Fling. Last year, burned out from touring and, Lovelis says, “curtain business aspects of music,” The Fling went on hiatus. Lovelis, though, kept writing, eventually producing enough demos to share with producer Elijah Thomson, the bassist for Everest who has worked on records by the likes of Delta Spirit, Richard Swift and Ivan & Alyosha. With composer/session man Frank Lenz manning the drums, they convened at Elliott Smith’s former home, New Monkey Studios, and two days later they had “Dimensions,” Lovelis’ forthcoming full-length. The album places Lovelis squarely in the parade of vintage-sounding guitarsmiths such as White Fence and Smith Westerns, staring down tumult from within and without with beatific melodies and ascendant choruses. Dan Michicoff of the Tijuana Panthers started writing and recording songs in his Los Angeles apartment. The project grew to include Matt Maust of Cold War Kids on bass and visuals, and also the voices of Robyn Roth and Naomi Greene. Michicoff and Maust then made their way up to Seattle for tracking at Joe Plummer’s studio La Puebla. Plummer of Cold War Kids and The Shins donned two caps as drummer and engineer of the sessions. Finally, they handed the mixed bag of home and studio recordings off to Yukki Matthews of The Shins for mixing. The resulting bouquet is the parti-colored Late Bloomers’ Bloomers.

New York, NY (May 2, 2016) -- There is a tidal wave of cross-cultural expression washing inland out of Long Beach and Rudy De Anda is at the forefront of this genre-bending, sonic re-definition of the musical melting pot. Rudy De Anda will release Delay, Cadaver of a Day on June 24 via Porch Party Records. 

Delay, Cadaver of a Day was recorded at Jazz Cats Studios (Crystal Antlers, Day Wave, Hanni El Khatib) and is a brutally honest, gritty, and loud representation of Rudy De Anda's auditory range. It weaves sweeping melodicism with a dynamic interplay of soul and punk-rock and showcases the darker side of the Californian musician. 

Inspired by The Velvet Underground, dissonance, and shoe-gaze, Delay, Cadaver of a Day conjures up imagery of Fellini stumbling upon the city of Long Beach, and goes from optimism to mystery almost immediately. "It's like a black and white film shot in present time," offers De Anda about the album. "It's the soundtrack to a Criterion Collection piece based in LA with more surrealistic notes, feelings, and vibes." 

Delay, Cadaver of a Day is the follow up to De Anda's debut EP, Ostranenie, released last year. The EP was a result of Rudy's craving to begin a solo project after fronting psych-prog group Wild Pack of Canaries. In 2013, when the band was treading on and off hiatus, De Anda started writing his own songs and was approached by one of his musical mentors, Isaiah "Ikey" Owens (Mars Volta, Jack White) to record. Lost in their effortless chemistry, the two friends setup sessions in Ikey's living room in-between his Nashville trips and his Jack White tour schedule. 

Ostranenie was lauded by LA Record, DIY Magazine, Grimy Goods and MTV Iggy (RIP), who called lead single "Visions of Plumerias", "...a warm, Brian Wilson-esque pop tune that betrays every notion of Long Beach (as the home of rapper extraordinaire Snoop Dogg or the ska lords of Sublime)." 

Rudy De Anda's live show is backed by a rotating cast of friends who are part of other notable projects including Crystal Antlers, DeLux and Meow Twins. Additionally, De Anda is part of a budding Los Angeles artist group called Qvolé Collective representing and celebrating progressive Latino music. Rudy De Anda has been busy creating a following from Long Beach and L.A., as well as tours down to Mexico and up to Santa Cruz, San Francisco and the southwest.

L.A. native Kevin Litrow's LITRONIX is a music machine inventing irresistible futuristic pop songs. He infuses warm analog electronic synthesizers, organic guitars, multi-layered loops, and boxed beats.

For the forthcoming debut album, critically acclaimed Sub Pop artist Avi Buffalo stepped in as producer, and is backing LITRONIX on guitar at shows. Franco Falsini of Sensations’ Fix brought his vision for a remix of the first single, and also plays on the full-length with a long list of talented musicians. Litrow is no rookie. In his past projects he has toured and shared the stage with the stellar talents of Peaches, The Gossip, The Kills, Ariel Pink, Future Islands, Blood Brothers, Broadcast, Múm, and Ian Mackaye. Now is the time for LITRONIX.

After his band 60 Watt Kid ended, Litrow had new aspirations. He wanted to continue creating and performing- but, without additional members. For years, Litrow submerged his sounds in a sea of loop pedal experimentation. He crafted beats using drum machines and beat-boxing vocals. He layered synths, bass synths, and abnormally tuned guitars. While swimming in his new world of sonic textures, Litrow moved to an apartment directly above a gas station. The infinitely rotating cast of characters that rolled in and out became the daily entertainment and inspiration to the songs on the upcoming debut album Pump the Gas.

Since a young musician, Avi Buffalo has been a fan of Kevin Litrow's music. He discovered the pleasantly strange sounds of 60 Watt Kid and frequented Kevin’s shows. Towards the end of 2013, Avi offered Kevin to record a song at a home studio in West Adams, Los Angeles. Though there was no album in site, the pair recorded one song, and then contacted Dylan Wood of 60 Watt Kid to record a second song.

Another admirer of Litrow is Long Beach label Porch Party Records, who have hosted Kevin Litrow’s projects at numerous house shows and venues since 2010. After an electrifying performance of brand new songs in the LBC in 2014, label owner Casey Terrazas immediately approached Kevin and wanted to put these sounds on vinyl. They headed into local Long Beach studio Jazzcats with engineer J.P. Bendzinski. Excited about the quickly blossoming creative collaboration, Avi offered to produce and record the album with Kevin and JP. Now, the team was complete. To bring these new sounds to the stage, Avi began playing live shows as the 2nd member of LITRONIX, captivating audiences with their vibrant, progressive sound. Back in the studio, numerous musicians from Los Angeles, Long Beach, and beyond overdubbed countless parts. Lastly, the songs were taken to Brian Frederick at 3 Pt Studios for the final mix.

LITRONIX will be releasing the lead single Are You New Age? on a 7” late summer of 2016 with a remix by Franco Falsini of Sensations’ Fix, then followed up with the full-length 12” LP Pump The Gas this fall- both available on Porch Party Records.

The Gentle Hits are an indie rock-folk band from Phoenix, Arizona that have deep roots in the international music scene.  Ian Metzger, lead songwriter and vocalist, drummer Mark Kulvinskas, and multi-instrumentalist James Mulhern, all gained a wide-scale following with their critically acclaimed projects Dear and the Headlights and What Laura Says.  After taking a bit of a hiatus- followed, perhaps by a stint of “Hey you should focus a minute and get your shit together cause your life just fell apart”- Metzger, Mulhern, and Kulvinskas could not help but return to their love of making music. 

“The death of our former projects, and the waves of tragedy thereafter in each of our respective personal lives, seemed to only heighten the need for expression,” says Metzger. “We created this band in an effort to keep our sanity”. 

In addition to writing, arranging, and performing its music, The Gentle Hits produced and engineered their forthcoming self-titled album. The result is a 13-song epic that spans the full spectrum musically and emotionally.

The Gentle Hits' previous projects continue to have an effect on their fans, while simultaneously connecting with new ones. Even with noteworthy appearances at Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo, and Coachella, desert band Dear and the Headlights gave their fans only a taste of Metzger’s melodic nature and lyrical delivery. 

To his fans- Ian Mertzger’s voice is still a part of their daily lives. The Gentle Hits is an unapologetic expansion on Metzger’s own truth. He and the band dynamically create a self assured and beautiful sonic landscape, encompassing all the grit and beauty one human life can hold.

Religious Girls is an experimental pop band from Oakland, California that originated in 2008. They’ve released several praised EPs and gained a dedicated following with their dynamic live sets (often performing off the stage in the middle of the pit). They haven’t released any music since 2012, and their fans are highly anticipating hearing new music.  The Stranger poetically explain Religious Girls unique sound and its powerful effect on the listener:

Religious Girls has become a diverse trio of multi-instrumentalists, with each member hailing from separate musical backgrounds that range from metal to noise to math rock and pop. Using their influences and talents, Religious Girls focus their energy into creating powerful harmonies and layering them over intricate percussive rhythms. "Derek Barber has become a go-to Bay Area guitarist for projects where the guitar is peripheral, not central. In the self-proclaimed “Afro-soul” of Bells Atlas, and the progressive vibe music of Astronauts, etc, and Madeline Kenney, Barber’s licks are intricate accents to songs that wouldn’t necessarily be described as “guitar music.” His ability to find tones and compositional shapes that blend with, for example, the shoreline breeziness of Madeline Kenney’s lounge-pop “Know,” has yielded him a versatile repertoire.

His solo output under the name Perhapsy has been similarly wide-ranging stylistically. However, on his latest and best record Kingdom Starlight Bliss (out 11/23), he stretches his six-string savviness into a fluid batch of aerial shoegaze. Unlike other modern gazers like Nothing and Cloakroom, Barber’s production and instrumental colors are explicitly reminiscent of the 90’s opuses from Slowdive and My Bloody Valentine. During a blind listen, the record could conceivably be a lost relic of that era, which is both weird and amazing. More than anything, though, it speaks to Barber’s inter-generational songwriting prowess. The dude’s pushing the artform forward while also recreating, with eye-brow raising accuracy, an inimitable era of the genre’s history.

“34th & West,” which we’re premiering below, is the second single from Kingdom Starlight Bliss and it’s like the heavenly haze of Cocteau Twins meets the propulsion of Loveless. The groove is tight, the guitars are spindly, the vocals are splattered with reverb, and the hook is dangling somewhere between all three.

34th  and  West

Perhapsy is the solo project of musician/graphic-artist Derek Barber, guitarist and songwriter of Bay Area-based groups Curls (Christopher Owens of Girls), Bells Atlas, and contributor to Astronauts, etc. and Madeline Kenney.

Although Perhapsy began as an instrumental post-rock band during Barber’s formative college years as a Jazz Studies major at the University of Michigan, upon graduation, everything changed. While on tour, Barber — diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder — endured an extended hospitalization in 2009. The experience left a lasting impression on him. Eventually, he emerged with a newfound musical confidence. This new desire to write songs about his struggles with mental illness, the day-to-day complex emotions of life, and the weight of his past religious overcoming would eventually find voice on the 2016 sophomore album Me Tie Dough-ty Walker. A marked transformation in stylistic direction, its songs focused not only around Barber’s dynamic guitar playing, but his distinctive and personal vocal stylings and songwriting.


Continuing to battle the everyday stigma surrounding mental illness, pondering extended periods of his life in psychiatric institutions, and a candid desire to bring real-life emotions to a song’s surface, Perhapsy released The — an EP off Oakland labels Copper Mouth Records and Wave Dweller — in 2017. Gaining notoriety around the Bay Area for his inimitable guitar contributions to high-profile bands, Perhapsy became additionally highlighted in local and online press for engaging live performances and an emerging talent as a visual artist. 

Kingdom Starlight Bliss — the new and third full-length album by Perhapsy — is an invitation into the ever-lush, layered, melodic, dissonant, and deeply personal musical world of Barber. Throughout KSB, musical storms rage and subside. Lyrics shift from fleeting thoughts of blissful meditation to detailed accounts of one’s past and pain.

Opening track “William Timothy” recounts the memory and personal story of the death of Barber’s father at age 13.  It’s with this deep candidness and dream-like qualities the listener is greeted into the complex world of bliss and sorrow. "The Curse (Is Getting Worse)" is a Heatmiser-esque banger with a propulsive drum and chord pattern inversely paired with pleading soft vocals. “Neverending Story” — a title jestingly yet affectionately taken from the 1984 beloved film — is a song more to do with romantic nostalgia than fantasy. “34th & West” shares the deep joy, passion, and risk of moving-in with a loved one. “Dying Arts” playfully yet sincerely questions the fear of pursuing Art and Music as profession. Closing track “Light” sets the stage for the spark a lover can bring into one’s life despite the change of the seasons. It isn’t until hidden track — an altogether rubato-beautiful and unconventional guitar-duet snippet of the Jazz standard “All the Things You Are” — is the full range of emotions and styles of the album felt. Here, we find Barber at the height of his abilities in musicianship, songwriting, but most importantly, candid and heartfelt expression.

Kingdom Starlight Bliss will be available November 23rd on 12” transparent cyan vinyl (with 24" lyric poster insert) via Long Beach label Porch Party Records.

"Perhapsy, the solo project of California-based Derek Barber, has released “The Curse (Is Getting Worse)," an intricate and coloured entanglement of guitar and Barber’s soft-spoken voice. He murmurs the questions “who are you?” and “what are you?” as the electric strings sew together a weighted and vast first single.

For his first single off upcoming album, “The Curse” is no exception, tackling the topic of pursuing something while having self-doubt, as Perhapsy puts it:

“It’s easy to wonder “who” and “what” you really are when you’re over-concerned with what other people think. I think there’s sort of a “curse” attached to being a musician or artist in that there’s no avoiding these things. However, there’s also something beautiful there: if you feel compelled to make art and music, you’re going to do it regardless. I think maybe that’s what “the curse” is.”

Apart from launching Perhapsy, Barber also strums in acts Madeline Kenney, Bells Atlas and Curls. His new album, Kingdom Starlight Bliss, drops November 23rd with Porch Party Records, marking Perhapsy’s fourth full length album.
