Sisters Love was an American R&B and funk ensemble active in the late 1960s and early 1970s.

Sisters Love was founded in 1968 by former members of The Raelettes. Several of Ray Charles's backing ensemble quit the band at the same time and soon afterwards organized themselves into their own vocal group.[1]

They recorded their first single in 1968 for Los Angeles label Manchild Records and soon after signed with A&M Records. They remained on A&M for several years, appearing in the Willie Hutch-scored blaxploitation film The Mack singing the funk song "Now Is the Time".[1] They scored a hit single in 1971 with "Are You Lonely?", written and produced by Gene Chandler, which reached #20 on the Billboard R&B charts[2] and #108 on the Billboard Singles Chart.[3]
In 1972, the group left A&M and signed with MoWest Records, a Motown subsidiary. 
They toured with the Jackson Five and had an album scheduled for release in 1972, but this was shelved and the group disbanded in 1973; the recordings for the album remained unreleased until 2010.

The Rough Guide To Arabic Revolution

Across the world today, a PC or even a smartphone can double as a recording studio. That same smartphone (or an internet-connected PC) can transmit newly created anthems to millions, as it did during the Arab Spring. This Rough Guide explores the best underground hits that spurred on protestors during the recent seismic revolutions that occurred in the Arab world.

In the early days of the Tunisian revolution, a young rapper captivated the nation. Hamada Ben Amor, who is more commonly known by his stage name ‘El General’, raised many eyebrows with songs like ‘State Of The Nation’ and ‘Head Of State’. They became instant hits online, but under Ben Ali’s strict censorship these songs were considered treasonous, and El General found himself behind bars. El General was released from prison on the condition that he could no longer write or perform political songs. Ben Ali’s reign quickly ended, though, and El General is now considered the ‘Voice of the People’, and not just in Tunisia. His songs were regularly played in Cairo’s Tahrir Square during the Egyptian revolution. Another Tunisian singer Emel Mathlouthi is also heard on this album. 

Two of the most prominent artists from Tahrir Square were El Tanbura and Ramy Essam, both featured on this Rough Guide. El Tanbura are a collective of master musicians and philosophers (and custodians of Egypt’s oldest folk melodies) who hail from the Mediterranean city of Port Said. Cairokee are an Egyptian band who fuse rock ‘n’ roll with conscious lyrics and folk music references. Sami Yusuf is dubbed ‘Islam’s biggest rock star’ and has performed at Wembley Arena. ‘I’m Your Hope’ was recorded during the Egyptian revolution and dedicated to the youth of the Arab world. 

Before 2011, Ramy Essam was not a household name in Egypt. In fact, he was simply a student with a guitar and a remarkable songwriting talent. He began singing in Tahrir Square in the early days of the revolution when there weren’t any formal ‘stages’ Soon, his songs ordering Mubarak to ‘Irhal, Irhal’ (‘Leave, Leave’) had become the soundtrack to the revolution. This Rough Guide comes with a full-length album by Ramy Essam.

Jyotsna Srikanth: Call Of Bangalore

Carnatic music from the south of India is renowned for its naturally melodic form. Jyotsna Srikanth’s music is woven through with this aesthetic; her artful violin soars in gāyaki style (as if sung), punctuated by percussionists Patri Satish Kumar and N. Amruth on mridangam (double-sided drum) and khanjira (clay pot) respectively.

Jyotsna hails from Bangalore, the capital of the state of Karnataka. Her music, like her home city, is full of eclecticism and revelling in the collision of old and new. On this album Jyotsna concentrates on a collection of Carnatic classical music showcasing works by some of its greatest composers. Yet via a host of other projects, Jyotsna is equally as likely to be found jamming with her fiddle in free jazz, folk fusion or even rock forms. This elasticity imbues her classical Carnatic playing with a fresh energy that summons listeners to discover the opulent musical history of her home; this is her Call Of Bangalore.

Jyotsna first began to play violin at the tender age of five. As a young child she was influenced by and in the company of greats. Kunnakudi Vaidyanathan, the classical violinist from Tamil Nadu, was an early inspiration and as a young musician she accompanied the respected multi-instrumentalist Mangalampalli Balamural Krishna. She has also worked with international artists Eduardo Niebla, Rao Kyao and Robert Atchison. While rising through the ranks in her music career, Jyotsna also found time to attain a medical degree and is a qualified doctor. Clearly a fiercely intelligent and ambitious multi-tasker, Jyotsna’s music is now the focus of her life. In addition to her live performing career she teaches violin, curates the London International Arts Festival and plays for Bollywood soundtracks.

Traditionally, Carnatic concerts begin with a varnam, a short exploration of the raga in use. True to form, this album opens with the track ‘Varnam’. The raga used here is mohana, a pentatonic pattern used in cultures across Asia. The work is colourful and breezy, an up-beat way in to the album. ‘Gopalaka Pahimam’ was composed by nineteenth century Maharaja and patron of the arts Swati Tirunal and used the morning raga bhowli. Jyotsna also includes a composition by one of the most famous Carnatic composers, Muttuswami Dikshitar. ‘Annapoorne’ is typical of Dikshitar’s craft, sweet and slow in tone and tempo, and heavily decorated with gamakas (ornamental figures). The subject concerns Annapoorne, the Hindu goddess of nourishment. The raga used is sama, one that denotes peace. The closing work ‘Thillana’ is by Jyotsna’s contemporary Lalgudi Jayaraman. The raga mand is adopted from the northern Indian, or Hindustandi, tradition and the time cycle is furious and rhythmically complex.
