I close my eyes and I’m driving down the highway in an Altima

EXT. USED CAR DEALERSHIP - DUSK

The lot is nearly empty except for a few beat-up cars. Each looks to have a questionable history.

A 2009 NISSAN ALTIMA sits under a harsh glow. The car is stitched together by junkyard donors who didn't survive. Tires are balder than Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's head. Check engine light shining like a beacon of bad decisions.

Standing next to it, the DEALER (30s, rough around the edges, unreadable) leans against the hood.

DEALER lights a cigarette.

Across from them, the BUYER (20s, restless, broke, but determined) eyes the car.

DEALER starts to slowly walk around the car. The BUYER follows.

                DEALER
        (tilts head, smirks)
    You ever driven one of these before?

                BUYER
        (shaking head)
    Nah.

                DEALER
    Yeah. I figured as much.
        (gestures to the ALTIMA)
    I had a couple. Never drove the same way twice.
        (pauses)
    ...depends on who's chasing you.

BUYER half-smirks. Doesn't respond.

                DEALER
        (stops, looks at him)
    Go on. Take a look.

BUYER looks down at the crumpled financing sheet in their hand.

LOAN TERM LONGER THAN MOST RELATIONSHIPS.

DOWN PAYMENT LOWER THAN YOUR STANDARDS AFTER 3 A.M.

BUYER swallows hard. They shouldn't even be considering this. But something about the ALTIMA calls to them.

                BUYER
    What's the catch?

                DEALER
        (grinning)
    The catch?
        (leans in, voice low)
    The catch is... once you turn the key, there ain't no turning back.

BUYER looks at the ALTIMA's dents, the cracked taillight, and the front bumper held together with Flextape.

                BUYER
        (gestures at the bumper)
    No discount for the damage?

                DEALER
        (shrugs)
    If you're worried about the price, you're not ready for what it costs.

BUYER looks at the DEALER.

DEALER already knows.

                DEALER
    You don't pick an ALTIMA.
    You don't choose it.
        (pauses, exhales smoke)
    It chooses YOU.

Silence.

BUYER looks down at the keys in their hand.

A decision. A risk. A path forward.

BUYER slides into the driver's seat.

The steering wheel is cracked, but defiant. Worn smooth by countless hands, most of them driving away from something. Late-night getaways. Side hustles gone wrong. Detours soaked in adrenaline.

BUYER lets out a light chuckle.

                DEALER
        (grinning)
    You don't hold that wheel.
        (pauses)
    ...you inherit it.

BUYER grips the key. Their thumb resting on the edge.

DEALER leans in through the window.

                DEALER
        (softly)
    Ain't no backing out now.

BUYER takes a breath and presses the push to start.

THE ENGINE ROARS.

THE SPEAKERS EXPLODE WITH BASS.

A relentless, driving beat pulses through the cabin.

BUYER grips the wheel. Their heart pounds in time with the music. They glance in the rearview mirror.

A decision has been made.

                DEALER
        (grinning, nodding)
    Yeah.
        (steps back)
    ...I knew you would

BUYER slams on the accelerator.

TIRES SCREECH

The ALTIMA launches forward in the neon-lit night.

As the ALTIMA disappears down the street, the taillights flicker like a heartbeat.
