I wrote 'The Chant' a few months ago when I was feeling as though I was being ambushed by a number of pretty intense situations. As I wrote, the song became less about me, and more about those who feel as thought they don't have a voice. We all have times when life is pretty awful and I hope that you have someone in your life that is prepared to stand and fight for you in those moments. 

This song was spontaneously recorded in a garage of a good friend in Tennant Creek. I recently spent some time working out in the desert, and had a fair bit of time to write and workshop some new music. Tim Webb added the bass, electric guitar and organ sounds which I love. I'd love to hear your thoughts. This is a basic recording at the moment and I'm going to be adding harmonies to it soon. 

The Chant (demo)

I wrote this song while doing community arts work in the remote town of Tennant Creek in the Northern Territory. While I was there, I experienced a number of incredibly powerful dust storms. There was something mystical about these dust storms and after a number of discussions with some local, spiritual Indigenous women, I discovered that these dust storms carry bad luck. As I watched the next dust storm roll in over the desert horizon, I started thinking about whether there was anyone in the town who, instead of seeing the dust storm as bad luck, were eagerly awaiting the storm to hit, hoping it would carry them away...

The Chant tells the story of a community being ambushed by a common enemy, and the sacrifice that community makes each day in effort to war off the enemy. If only the community banded together as a force, rather than wishing for someone...anyone else to fight their battles for them...

Closer explores the fear of commitment in a relationship, and the battle between desiring love and affection, with the fear of being vulnerable and overwhelmed. In a gentle, acoustic way, the song reveals that although love is kind and sacred, it can also be blind and full of danger.

Let Go is the most stripped back song on the EP. I wrote it while devising a contemporary theatre performance with some fellow artists on the topic of letting go and holding on, to people, experiences, emotions and fears in our lives. It discusses the battle when you know that change is coming and you need to let go of the person or the memory, even if you don't want to. It also explores the vulnerability that this brings.

I found Brea on Facebook and fell in love with her voice. So I just asked her if she would like to be part of my show. Because she lives in Berlin it was easy for us to meet up. She actually came to my place three times; Friday, Sunday and the following Tuesday. This made the whole process be really relaxed.
