The relatively young experimental platform, Edited Arts, was born out of a friendship between two students and has had an impressive journey so far, establishing itself as a progressive event organiser and filmmaker. Since its conception about two years ago, the organisation has matured and grown in many ways. Instead of throwing house parties, it regularly organises live events at London’s booming venue, The Glove That Fits. Instead of curating a DIY multimedia exhibition at the abandoned police station, it assists in the event programming at the Royal Albert Hall. Instead of filming a graduate art show, it collaborates on a documentary with Resident Advisor. Now, it’s also set to conquer another height and become a label.

The name ‘Edited Arts’ refers to the process of continuing to work on something that seems finished, editing it and saving it as a new file. It’s about the process of constant improvement and advancement through building on what’s already there. As such, the platform aims to upgrade the current concept of audiovisual performance by paying special attention to the set design during its events. Similarly, for its very first release, the platform turns to what it already has – a community of long-time collaborators – and comes up with a tracklist full of adventurous talent, enhanced by some really noticeable newcomers.

The bio of their debut compilation, EXTENDED, purports to “invite musicians, artists and designers to consider the idea of the extended self”. This can be seen in the artists involved, many of whom have been prominent at Edited Arts since near the beginning of its existence. They include Alex Buchan, the artist behind music videos of this compilation, Loraine James, Rave Retirement Community, Keiken, and +777000, who’s premiering here today. +777000’s input ‘Salt Salt’ is a metaphor for the medical use of salt, the painful healing that is heard in the patches of noise on an otherwise ambient track.

Listen below and look out for a full compilation released on Wednesday, May 15th via Soundcloud and Bandcamp with a visual stream available on Youtube. All the profits will be donated to Young Minds, a charity fighting for children and young people’s mental health.

There is grief, exultation and relief inherent in belonging to community. Re Munus reflects on the tone of deep gravity with which the re munisation of the de munised is unravelling. The generations which dismantled their social contract, achieved immunity, revoked solidarity.

Severe circumstances foment collectivity, suffering and empathy, interrupting the ethereal dream of social weightlessness. Re Munus sketches sensations and observations during a time of reorientation, rediscovery of lived sensibility on a relational scale. An encounter with sensations which we had said defined us—the tangibility of which we had forgotten, believed to be confined to the past. There is tension between the physical withdrawal and lived intensity which permeates these works.

Personal drift. There is a multitude of presences guiding you through this record as a listener, not without their own doubts as to where they are leading you. A murky social space. Time-compressed club experiences within layered acoustic dimensions; consolidated, captured and played back into the same space. I am sitting in several rooms simultaneously. Death metal screams in an Animal Crossing world modelled on our own.

The choral rush of ‘Million Dollar Cowboy’ from Lugh’s Hélico EP (2018) re-appears again in ‘Braises’ and ‘Free Fall’, deeper and re-figured. Sometimes the record also haunts itself—each element heard having been through a process so long and many-staged, it’s as though it has already lived.

These compositions hold within them a flawed attempt to communicate on every level. The desire of language as expressed through music—towards shared meaning. Paradoxically voiced and voiceless, it denies textual, verbal description, instead crying out through the cracks in forming its own liquid tongue. Clone choirs simultaneously rehearse in an open space below. A slow walk through this spectacle. It’s an anguished record as much as it is at times tranquil. The movement between voices detached and embodied becomes playful—often warping them far beyond recognisability.

Beautiful artefacts. Stomach churns in the face of a burnt-out horizon. Cantering & sneezing. Air is driven into the corners and creases of a gold-plated, reverberant structure. The neural network claps to keep itself in time. Gutter Synthesis organ lament; tears of the duffing oscillators. There are moments on this release when tensely divergent fragments are barely held together. The prominent human voice mixing with the heavily re-sampled voice—it’s an incredible lift. Superimposed night and day. Sonic creatures living within the material, sharing time and space. Tenderness and together-ness.

After a long wait, Etang Brulant is absolutely stunned and delighted to bring you serbian musician Zhe Pechorin and her new solo release, « Boundary Lessons ». After several appearances on Various Artists these past months (Amek, Minor Adjustments...), a 20 minutes live jam released on Ōtium and a cassette on Holy Geometry two years ago, « Boundary Lessons » seems to crystallize the mental universe and her thoughts network in a touching and highly personal way.

Using deep pads and pristine synths drowned in an ethereal reverberation without ever slipping into a cacophony of lost or forgotten frequencies, the melodic composition of Zhe Pechorin demonstrates a calm and peaceful state of mind, yet torn apart by an overwhelming melancholy, sometimes subtly pulled out of its torpor by noisy addings and the discrete trespassing of damaged leads. Through the listening of the whole album and the meaning of titles, one can feel a strong sense of loss ; almost a mourning process or a heavy nostalghia, adhesive to the skin and the mind and dangerously craving for recognition. Homesickness of an unknown time, of an unknown land, of an unknown past - or a real and more painful impression of regret, one can choose the shape of its interpretation.
