Organic-Electronic remixes inspired by the sensitive and mystical spaces between land and sea.

When Atlanta-based producer and multi-instrumentalist Piper Street Sound, aka Matt Mansfield, created his intimate sonic landscape Barrier Island (2017) he drew inspiration from Georgia's Sea Islands.  The EP saw the producer's kaleidoscopic talents through the prism of Georgia's crown jewel, the beautiful but imperiled Cumberland Island. Barrier Island focused on water and nature, displaying Mansfield's signature production style; electronic timbres woven into dubby organic instrumentation and naturalistic sounds.

Now an array of like-minded producers have remixed his work, and brought their own colors to bear, taking the source material into new spaces. Featuring remixes by Kaleema, Jin Yerei, El Buho, Andres Oddone, and Santi of Santi & Tugce. Most have chosen the album's final set-piece al-lu-vi-al, an exploration into dripping rhythms and splashes of Dub-infused spring reverb. These remixes provide book-ends and centerpiece to the work, with tunes Georgic and ZikaZikaZika rounding out the set list.

Cumberland Island, the inspiration for this EP series, is one of the last undeveloped barrier islands on the East Coast. Once owned in turns by the Spanish military, plantation-based agricultural concerns, and Gilded Age robber barons, the bulk of the island was gifted in perpetuity to the National Parks Department to remain a wild, undeveloped National Seashore in 1972. Cumberland Island is at the time of this writing in danger of being carved up and developed. Disruption of the aquatic and avian species and their food sources that season on and around Cumberland Island would have disastrous effects on a global scale.

Shika Shika is proud to present “Rwandance” the second album by German multi-instrumentalist Andi Otto. Anyone that has had the opportunity to see Andi’s live performance knows about his talent as cellist and was no doubt blown away by his self-made device, the “Fello” - a sensor-extended cello bow.

“Rwandance” sees And move into new territory - born out of a meeting between And and Rwandan musician and dancer Evariste Karinganire, while collaborating for the music of dance piece Planet Kigali.

“The idea was to first listen to a music archive of songs and instrumental recordings of instruments from Rwanda. Then I tried to transform this material into my own sound. I was mesmerised from the very first moment when I heard this beautiful language: Kinyarwanda alongside these instruments like the Umuduri a percussive bow instrument, and rhythmical structures, like the 5/4 and 3/4 feelings which are the basis of many songs.”

Andi has a talent for using technology in a way that is touching and touchable, enticing out warm and organic tones from his machines. On “Rwandance” this sensibility enters into a perfect dialog and harmony with the traditional Rwandan rhythms. His break away from the traditional 4/4 structures of electronic music is not only refreshing but full of groove.

"Planet Kigali“ was premiered at Kampnagel in Hamburg at the end of 2018:

"Planet Kigali“ is about a bunch of time-travellers who come back from the future to our present year. They remember that there had still been borders and passports in 2019, a fine, utopian plot… and they represent a hypothesis of what aspects of Rwanda’s cultural tradition could look and sound like in 200 years. The time-warp makes it possible to shift the focus away from the topic of the country’s horrible genocide. Instead of investigating a post-traumatic society, the piece tries to jump ahead to the future and to the past simultaneously. Between old memories or recordings and our dreams, fears or expectations of the future.”

The Brazilian Lisbon-based multifaceted artist Cigarra (Ágatha Barbosa) has been clearly showing versatility as a producer. Despite her immersive research of sample appropriation - plunderphonics and copyleft - unveiling a popular, peripheral, contemporary, global blend production; Cigarra's last EP titled "Ato" (released on the beloved Tropical Twista Records, 2018) stepped away a little from the dancefloor and pushed her creative process to the forefront of an intersection between music, theater, protest, performance, communication and emotion.

Evolving skills over experiences and performing with other narrative languages, the three tracks on "Ato" showcase collaborative productions from distinct artistic niches and differ from those found in her first "Limbica" EP; showing a more refined, accurate Cigarra's side; including being able to recreate politely from samples, lines, field recordings, noises, voices that were turned into bases and bass lines. Being the track with the most feedback from the EP, "Tu No Me Vas" reflects the message that Cigarra carries with herself today and also part of the soundtrack for Cia. Nosotras's “Prantos Invisíveis” acting, a strong and urgent track of women marching on, cracking up everything wherever they go.The phrase that kicks off the production was taken from a song by Franco-Chilean singer Ana Tijoux, in this context, the graft is fervently sung by the actresses in the respective play, having its first version recreated and adapted in order to get an oriented-dancefloor setting, reverberating a poetic portrait of the immigration of Latin American women to Sao Paulo. Somehow, it reflected an ability to connect with the listener without following usual cues in music.

Vocal textures, various moods, and crafty rhythms. These sentences outline what this EP brings to the table. With contrasting and complementary lines to some extent, the choice of artists to create remixes came organically, uniting expressions and interpretations; weaving through floating ambiance, pop-infused pastures, funk 150bpm and vocals featuring throughout. Maracuyá brought in an ethereal interpretation, relinquishing the original samples of voices, and adding strengthness coming from other female singing voices by Guápil, original Costa Rican music project. The Japanese experimental-wizard Ground features a delicate version with more organic midtempo creative references. R Vincenzo with his peculiar performing style and techniques related with 'baile funk' universe (Brazilian popular electronic scene), uses the machines for repetition, vocal percussion and hypnotic collages. Finishing up the package, the Brazilian duo Venga Venga goes from the eccentricity of remote cultures to the most metropolitan subversion, genuinely reinterpreting it.

Well beyond her assured rhythmic touch that underpins previous works, Cigarra stays intuitive. With a passion for celebrating global female sounds, she manages the label Hystereofônica, constantly featuring cutting edge artists in an intense attempt to provide "visibility to half of the planet that lives in the shadow of the history", because no matter what kinda music you were into, there are women making it with just as much class, skill and passion as men do. Then, fleeing from the strictly musical plan and running away from conventions, which is taken from the experimental freedom in her work, she kept the alternative world close to her craft.
