DEEP GECKO ENERGY is the first label release for DJ, producer and dancer Rowan Savage. Having cut his teeth in Warrang’s ballroom scenes - as both a dancer, DJ and producer under the name Guy Ruin - Savage’s practice takes its starting point within queer ballroom culture and the celebration of queer indigeneity.

Under a new moniker, salllvage, queer indigeneity becomes launched into space, and an offering to the burgeoning field of indigenousfuturism is made. Created from field recordings taken on his native Kombumerri country (located in South East so-called Queensland), Savage’s music channels his relationship to country within the esoteric landscape of club music. Sludgey, dubby, bass-y and tribal – Deep Gecko Energy is a release that crawls under the skin. Across each of the five tracks -  ranging from hard hitting dancefloor bangers to the more subtle rhythms of bass music - the listener is immersed within a constantly shifting field of textures, dynamics and grit that at once reaches forward into new sonic territories while harnessing a deeply familiar primal energy from within.

PREMIERE: Autochthonic Sensory Meridian Response - salllvage

Hextape’s new concept album >:) (‘angry smiley”) scatters the listeners across 35 mins of chopped up jungle, footwork, techno, noise, and classical cello directly inspired by the solo rave-like experience of an MRI machine. The sounds of an MRI usually evade recording, as electrical equipment interferes with the magnetic functions of the machine, yet produce a constant stream of electrical noise as it uses electro-magnetic and radiofrequency waves to create resonant imaging of a subject’s body. Upon realising the MRI produces music that could rival some of the best sound artists of our time, whilst being inextricably ephemeral and unique to the patient’s body, Hextape approaches their memories of the sound like a recitation from an oral culture.

Drawing on the artist’s experience both as a patient and as a guest researcher at the Melbourne Brain Centre, >:) imagines a secret world of sanctioned and pirate radio stations only audible inside the scanner, conveying the siren song of the hospital both inward (to the listener) and outward (to the rave).
