Livro dos Mortos é a designação dada a uma coletânea de feitiços, fórmulas mágicas, orações, hinos e litanias do Antigo Egito, escritos em rolos de papiro e colocados nos túmulos junto das múmias. O objetivo destes textos era ajudar o morto em sua viagem para o outro mundo, afastando eventuais perigos que este poderia encontrar na viagem para o Além. Ele orientava as pessoas quanto aos caminhos a seguir para se atingir o reino de Osíris (a principal divindade cultuada pelos egípcios, símbolo do renascimento da alma, de sua IMORTALIDADE). Ao obedecer as instruções contidas neste sagrado manual, o Homem tinha condições de atingir um estágio elevado que o habilitava a se tornar um Espírito Santificado.
A ideia central do Livro dos Mortos é o respeito à verdade e à justiça, mostrando o elevado ideal da sociedade egípcia. Era crença geral que diante da deusa Maat de nada valeriam as riquezas, nem a posição social do falecido, mas que apenas os atos seriam levados em conta. Foi justamente no Egito que esse enfoque de que a sorte dos mortos dependia do valor da conduta moral enquanto vivo ocorreu pela primeira vez na história ocidental, visto que entre os habitantes do Vale do Rio Indu já existiam as noções de Karma e Dharma, ações que resultariam numa reação nesta e em outras vidas .
Não resta dúvida de que o julgamento dos atos após a morte devia preocupar, e muito, a maioria dos egípcios, religiosos que eram. Para os egípcios esse conjunto de textos era considerado como obra do deus Thoth. As fórmulas contidas nesses escritos podiam garantir ao morto uma viagem tranquila para o paraíso e, como estavam grafadas sobre um material de baixo custo, permitiam que qualquer pessoa tivesse acesso a uma terra bem-aventurada, o que antes só estava ao alcance do rei e da nobreza.
