Frank & Genie Summers are the founders of Family Missions Company. They have served as Lay Catholic Evangelists proclaiming the Gospel and serving the poor across globe since 1975.  They and their missionaries have worked to proclaim Jesus, His Gospel, and to serve the poor in the USA, Europe, Latin America, Asia, Africa, the Caribbean and Oceania; amounting to over 47 countries.

Frank has been a featured speaker at conferences, retreats, and Catholic events at home and abroad and was honored with the Diocese of Lafayette’s Medal for The Bishop’s Service Award. Over the years, Genie’s conference and retreat ministry has reached International and National venues – including the Women’s Conference at Franciscan University, CCRNO, Eucharistic Conferences, Clergy and Religious Community Retreats. 

Genie’s novel, Go! You Are Sent, volume one of the testimony of their faith journey, has reached thousands with their story of miracles and faith. Volume two, Our Family’s Book of Acts, has been distributed in Asia and has a new reprint with pictures in the USA.

Frank and Genie enjoy speaking on: evangelization, foreign missions,  family life, the Holy Spirit, Life in the Spirit seminar, holiness, social justice, lay apostolate,  basic ecclesial community, prayer and Bible reading, and living the scriptures. The Summers have seven children, nineteen grandchildren, and an ever-growing missionary family filling their lives with happiness and holiness.

John Ogilvie SJ was born of noble Calvinist parents in 1579 at Drumna-Keith in Banffshire, Scotland. As a boy he was sent to the continent to further his education. With the help of Father Cornelius van den Steen (also known as Cornelius a Lapide) he was received into the Catholic Church, and was a student at the Scots College in Louvain and at other centres of learning. He entered the Society of Jesus on November 5 1599, and after insistent pleading, he was allowed to return to his native country where his ministry was cut short by his betrayal and capture in Glasgow. After extreme suffering he was hanged on March 10, 1615. The principal cause of his martyrdom was his insistence on the primacy of the Pope in spiritual matters, a primacy he affirmed with great constancy to the very end. He was enrolled among the saints by Blessed Pope Paul VI on October 17, 1976.

The following letter written secretly in prison a short time before his death and addressed to Father Claude Acquaviva, the Superior General of the Society of Jesus, reveals the courage and humility with which St John faced martyrdom:

Dearest and wisest of veterans, after Christ and his angels and saints the most tender love of my heart. 

My sufferings are terrible, the tortures severe. Your Paternity’s charity will ensure that you pray for me, that I may die with great generosity for the ever victorious Jesus. May Christ long protect you, the most expert leader of his chosen and tested soldiers as the bulwark of his Church.

St Nicholas Owen was born in 1562 in Oxford into a devout recusant family, and trained as a carpenter and joiner.  Very little is known of his ministry as a Jesuit, other than he put his training as a carpenter to work constructing priest holes. The only written account of him comes from what others have written about him, and we've collected these together in this audio. St Nicholas Owen SJ - Biography and Last Confession

This weekend is Saturday the 5th and Sunday 6th of March, beginning the fourth week of Lent. 

I am not alone as I sit here, trying to pray.
Christ is present in these people around me.
Christ is here at my side, waiting for me,
ready to enter into my life, waiting for my invitation.
So, let me begin my prayer by acknowledging his presence, and inviting him in.

Over the course of this week, our readings have centred around the role of the prophets in history; not only on the messages they had for people, but on their own relationships with God and the difficulties they faced, particularly in their hometowns. Hearing these readings can be both challenging and encouraging to us. This weekend’s reading from the Gospel of Luke brings that same challenge and encouragement, through Jesus reminding the crowds of the Prophet Jonah’s work in Nineveh. 

If there had been tabloids back in those days, the commuters into Nineveh would've been reading ‘Crazy prophet has Nineveh in uproar: Smart foreign royal starts eighth week at Solomon’s palace’.  The people Jesus mentions here were the A-list celebrities of their generation.  What attitude do I have to the royals and celebrities who take up so much space in the media today?  Am I fascinated by them?  jealous?  scornful?

What has Jesus got that these celebrities haven't?  What does he offer me that they don't?

As I listen to the reading again, can I hear Jesus asking for a little space?

How do I want to respond, today, to these words of Jesus?   Do I need to recognise him for who he is?   Do I need to make more space for him in my life?   Whatever it is I want to say to him, I can say it, right now.


Saturday 5th & Sunday 6th March - Beginning the Fourth Week of Lent

In the Spiritual Exercises, St Ignatius gives us the idea of meeting sacred scripture with one's own life, mediated through Imaginative Contemplation. The aim of these reflections is to do this in tandem with pieces of art. Each month therefore, we will offer a painting in the hope that it will enable you to reflect more deeply on a particular passage of scripture. The idea is that you can return to the painting and scripture and discover more depth throughout the month.

Introduction to Praying with Art

“Walking with the Risen Christ – New Creation Retreat”, which offers daily scripture, reflections and music. This retreat is part of a developing ministry to promote and support young adults in their journey as missionary disciples, whose discipleship is formed and shaped by the central ideas of integral ecology as outlined in Pope Francis’ encyclical Laudato Si’.

Professor Rhythm’s 1991 recording Professor 3 is a vivid reflection of urban South Africa as apartheid was ending. Thami Mdluli’s production project had young and old dancing to a sound that sought to unite Blacks within Southern Africa. “Our music gave hope to the hopeless,” he says. 

Professor Rhythm’s third instrumental album (which contains some background vocals, to be exact), portrays the moment when the dominant mbaqanga and American R&B-based bubblegum sounds being produced in Johannesburg and other urban centers were transforming into house and hip-hop-inspired kwaito. The pop of the 80’s and all that went with it—from the models of synths and drum machines to the lyrical style—gave way to a changing melodic emphasis and new, much slower tempi using a completely different rhythmic skeleton. Upbeat, chipper bubblegum, often with double-time breakdowns and upstroke syncopations, faded and the sounds began to more closely resemble those of contemporary Black America—where hip-hop was slowing down and the bass-lines and melodies were getting moodier, darker in general. At the same time house music had briefly reached mainstream acceptance in the States and that popularity continued to feed into awareness overseas. These two influences blended with the burgeoning house music scenes in Johannesburg and Pretoria as Professor Rhythm 3 was being produced in March 1991 (the same year apartheid ended). Mdluli explains, “We were Influenced by foreign bands and so people updated their sound.”

According to Mdluli, the evolving sound was bolstered by widening availability of house and rap records from abroad while, most importantly, an increasing sense that apartheid might soon be finished was met with a new positivity vibe society. “1991, ’92, ’93… Mandela was released. People were upbeat, they were happy, the music was good.”

Professor 3 came out on vinyl as the LP business was dying in South Africa and sold around 20,000 copies. It was mainly distributed on tape, which sold closer to 100,000. With the help of engineer Fab Rosso, the recording features backing vocalists from Mango Groove.

After making a half-dozen records as Professor Rhythm, Mdluli once again shifted his focus musically. By the mid-90’s he had veered off gospel music—and left playing in bands and started making his own solo recordings. His enormous success in the gospel realm in the years since is a remarkable story in its own right, but for now we are only dancing.
