NVST - Killing Your Voice (Warzou Club Mix) [Big Science Records]

Our sixth VA compilation continues in the collective spirit at the heart of Pressure Dome; here taking its fullest form. The first of its kind in the label catalogue, ‘Two [Is Greater Than] One’ sees a selection of PD regulars and friends of the label put their heads together across eight atmospheric tracks, equally as suited to the club as to solo listening. 

Those who have followed the label for a while will be no stranger to the comp’s first collaborator. Human Resources teams up with London dub techno specialist, Keplrr, on ‘Spring’: a mood-led composition where the impact is contained in atmosphere. Fragmented drum breaks are engulfed by airy synth pads and punctuated by a dancehall-indebted rhythm that marches at 90BPM. ‘Yuppel’ welcomes Noods Radio mainstay Sid Quirk aka Keppel into the mix. He is joined by label boss, Yushh, on a ruminative percussive tool, guided by cavernous drums that fabricate a vivid, immersive environment. With the guidance of Brighton’s Caldera, the journey continues with Süss Choc. The reverb-laden synth plucks on ‘evoke water droplets, and hallucinatory details echo around them to create the illusion of being in a mountainous cove.

Delay Grounds – an audiophile in the truest sense of the word – is next to take the baton. Together, he and Yushh take it up a notch on ‘Telomere’ – a full-bodied club-ready track packed with glitchy chords and giddy drums. A gnarly, Pariah-esque breakdown segues into the track’s second wind where pitched-up vocal chops accelerate it to the compilation’s energetic climax. With the help of London drum specialist, Syz, ‘Fuzbidun’ keeps our feet firmly on the dancefloor. Breakbeats are chopped and rearranged, flitting between double and half time whilst a distorted mid-bass roughens things round the edges, prepping the ground for the compilation’s move to a more inorganic feel.

Bristol don, Forever, joins Yushh next on ‘Passing Notes’ – a groove-driven club track where skittish percussion ricochets from side to side, so palpable it tempts the touch. ‘Crash Bash Party At BUFOs’ is no different. The link-up between Delay Grounds and dance music’s stalwart of musique concrète, Wordcolour, is completely idiosyncratic to both artists: the perfect combination of found-sound percussion and skillfully rehashed vocal samples. It’s up to two PD mainstays – Roy Mills and Human Resources – to close proceedings. A chugging rhythm bubbles under the surface of ‘Sycophantasy’, sending us on a dubbed-out trip before picking the pace back up again.

GTEP04 excitingly welcomes german producer Kid Kun to Ghosttown Records. These three productions beautifully display Kid Kun´s personal take on modern, UK schooled techno hybridity. “Creep” introduces the listener to an industrial soundscape, spiced by eerie vocal chops. It’s undeniably dark, but powerfully driving energy continues to evolve with “Recharge” whose grimy claps fuse with thundering basslines. “Saturn”, finally, takes Kid Kuns sound to the faster paced realms where it hypnotically nods at DnB infused steppers. To round off the EP in style, Berlin based Cocktail Party Effect takes on “Creep” and transforms it into the ultimate uptempo roller. All through, a powerful display of high-end dancefloor-tools. GTEP04 is out 24th of May via Ghosttown Records.

Toupaz lands on Grid with a luminous, deep and complex EP. 4 tracks mixing impossible genres with contrast as the watchword.

The lead track Rabatanto wanders between dubstep and techno influences, at once dark with sizzling bass lines and ethereal with dubby percussion samples. A club banger for any crowd.

Genuine Connection is the tool of the bunch, galloping along at 142bpm it will thrill everyone with its ultra-detailed uk bass vibe contrasting with airy and colourful synthesizers.

On the b-side, Birdsong slows the tempo with a slow dancehall atmosphere mixed with deep subs and rap vocal samples.

Islandish, the closing track puts the emphasis on emotions, with emo synth lines again combined with dub echoes and a false slowness to create a one-of-a-kind emotional mood.

Blu Terra - Fix

Nothing is known about Blaire's early life, but it can be assumed that at some point he started working for the Murkoff Corporation - a company originally founded by computing pioneer Alan Turing and former Nazi scientist Dr. Wernicke, with a long track of crimes around the world. Blaire eventually rose through the ranks and became a high-ranking Murkoff executive. In 2009, Murkoff purchased and reopened Mount Massive Asylum, a former Colorado asylum, which remained closed for over 30 years until it was bought and the sole purpose for this purchase was so that Murkoff could start at the asylum the Morphogenic Engine program - nanotechnology experiments and dream therapies on asylum patients with the reason for these experiments being profit.

Intending to keep the experiments a secret, Murkoff hired paramilitary forces to guard the asylum and also appointed Blaire to become head of the asylum and report back to them results from the experiments. Blaire was especially dedicated to keeping what's happening inside the asylum a secret and going as far as institutionalizing, torturing, killing or enrolling at the Morphogenic Engine program anyone who tries to expose Murkoff and their plans to the public due to the fact that Blaire and many people who work for Murkoff could be given life sentences or the death penalty for crimes against humanity if exposed, as well as the possible large profit from these experiments.

This 2 track EP was created so that it would fit seamlessly into an Interplanetary Criminal Boiler Room, built with a blend of classic garage swing and modern underground grit.

This tune specifically marks a turning point for me as I define my sound. Perfect for DJs who want to inject some attitude and momentum into their sets :)
