There's this stigma about downtempo. That it lacks the energy and panache to really carry a crowd off its feet, to really get people moving. Here's the truth: boring people need constant stimulation. Take an artist like Russ Davies, for example. Could you characterize the music of Abakus as downtempo? Sure, though there's a ton of nu-disco hints, indie house flavor, and it begs the IDM sticker, though that's got its own truckload of stigmas. When it comes down to it, though, one Abakus song bears the emotional intensity of a breakup, enormous heartache, crushing defeat, or a bittersweet moment of somber joy.
