DJ Hype - Ruff Stuff Volume Five (Part1) [Recorded in 1993]

An extended, unedited 90 minutes garage mix recorded in one take - apologies for a couple of wobbly transitions, I haven't played some of these tracks in YEARS. 

I mixed this for Rinse FM's Garage Hour show, but was having so much fun playing the classics and digging the crates for the less obvious tracks that I wanted to carry on a bit!

If you were a UK Garage DJ in the late 90's you'll hopefully appreciate this. These are the tracks many people forget about, and it was this darker side of the 2 step garage sound that stemmed genres like Grime and Dubstep in their early stages. 

A proper mix for the DJ's and heads alike to enjoy, and for the uneducated of you out there to get your ears around the kind of stuff I was playing in my very early days as a bedroom DJ.

“Run the Block” takes the tough but smoky sound that Document One has made their own and adds a layer of East Coast hip-hop flavour. The rap-along vocal, that trademark upright and synthetic bass fusion, the popping drums and live-instrument arrangement combine to give this tune jazzfunk energy in abundance. Then “Small Steps” flips the script, darkening things up in a way you might not be expecting from these guys. The intro is the sound of approaching menace, as military drums and an eerie dialogue sample ratched up the tension. Then the drop is all about those twisted tendrils of bass, snaking around techstep drums and ghost-in-the-machine stabs. This is what happens when musicality meets aggression on a hell-bent mission to mash up the rave. So, this release proves that Document One have a love and talent for all sides of this music. As their track titles declare, they “Run the Block” in the funk neighbourhood and they're making “Small Steps” into the shadowy technoid realm. Now they've shown they can kill the dance in both, it's clear the Document One operation doesn't believe in boundaries.

The main themes in the mix centre around wood percussions, thunderous synth pads and chopped Zulu vocals - creating a kind of dark atmospheric sound. It is anthem like, vivid, tribal, abstract in parts and yet specifically dramatic. 

The sound reminds me - in part - of techno in the late 90s where my dj'ing journey began at 'Teknival' and illegal rave party but also has elements of early dubstep which was deep and mystical.

Most of the tracks were new releases that came out of my recent trip to Durban as well as tracks recently sent to me via whatsapp.
 
The mix is a tribute to the artists of my label Gqom Oh!, their crews and friends. It also includes a handful of exclusive tracks from the next release "Gqom Oh! X crudo Volta Mixtape".

It is Rough, rugged and raw. It's riot music.
