I named the genre Dream-Hop because I wanted to give it the dreamy feel of lo-fi with the hard drum patterns of hip-hop. Many things inspired the project: Anime (Sailor Moon, SAO), Japanese culture, Spirited Away, Nujabes, Maruchan ramen, sushi, Edinburgh, my muse Annasophia Robb, lofi producers (bsd.u, Entact, O K H O), vinyl records, and much more. I wanted to make a standalone dream-hop album that people can just relax or do homework to. The cover art is inspired by a cassette tape, and it features Venus from the Japanese anime Sailor Moon which I used to love as a kid.

Finally, I'd like to thank my fellow ODT collective mates Melrose and RSTY, as well as Bernard Willis and Entact for providing dope verses and remixes. Thanks to the whole ONEDAYTHOUGH family, to my family for always supporting me, and thank you to the fans for giving me a reason to do all this.

Description -

This album means a lot to me. First full length solo instrumental/beat album. Damn. It's been in the making officially for 7 months, unofficially since I was 16.

I don't like to write sappy things but if Take Care-era Drake taught me anything, it's worth giving an album a backstory and thanking those who helped you make it.

I officially started this project in the summer before my senior year in college. A lot of shit was happening. The album is a culmination of how I felt at the time, or how I've felt for a while. I wanted to make an intimate album. I hope the tone and visual aesthetics of the project convey some of the raw emotion that went into making it. [..] There are no standards I have to live up to except for the ones that I create for myself.

For now, it's just me. And what I've felt these past few months: the fear of not getting a job, the guilt I feel for basically failing my parents after they paid for my education, the want to let go and just pursue music instead of getting a legitimate job in anything not music related. The fear of dying alone. The loneliness of not being loved by someone. The want to be liked by people.

And of course other things inspired this album: anime (Akame ga Kill, Deadman Wonderland, W Dimension), Japan, lofi hip hop (bsd.u, swum, lord apex), nujabes, knxwledge, J Dilla, Flying Lotus, Dev Hynes, The Life of Pablo by Kanye West, Rodeo by Travis Scott, 90's/2000's R&B (Joe, Donnell Jones, Floetry, Goapele), Motown (Brass Construction, The Manhattans), jazz (Robert Glasper, John Coltrane, Ramsey Lewis, Pharaoh Sanders), Janet Jackson, Ten City, Jodeci, Yuji Ohno, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Jean Luc Godard, Francois Truffaut, Suehiro Maruo, and hundreds of other things that have filtered their way into my music one way or the other. The album cover is a drawing by Suehiro Maruo that I edited, and thought it reflected the album nicely.

I don't know what the overall mood of the project is. [..] I want people to listen to it when they are happy, sad, in love, nostalgic, partying, skating, or anything in between. Music affects all of us differently and that's what I love about it. [..] This album was made to reflect how I feel. How I've felt since I broke up with my ex 4 years ago - alone. But also to connect to anyone who has ever felt alone too.

But I can't front. My family is incredibly supportive. The pressure of getting a real job sucks, but they love my music. My friends are also very supportive. And the fans I have are amazing. Slowly but surely, I'll affect everyone. I want to become the best.

I made the entirety of this album in my dorm room in college. I produced it, mixed it, created the visuals for my live shows, edited the artwork, sent it out to press etc. etc. Don't limit yourself. Pursue your passion, and learn everything you can about it. Don't wait for inspiration, search for it constantly. And to anyone feeling alone — just know that you're not. "Everybody is something to somebody" and if not, you're somebody to me.

I named the album 'Otaku' to poke fun at myself and my love for anime/Japan. It also falls in line with Lofi Hip Hop's obsession with the anime aesthetic. I always joke with my friends that I'm a step away from getting a body pillow. I also wanted to explore the stigma behind it and question its definition. I don't think people should judge each other so harshly.

'DESPAIR' is the first part of my DESIRE trilogy. It's kind of like the B-Side to 'DESIRE'. The third part, 'DESTINY,' will be released far into the future, with 'DESIRE' releasing hopefully by 2018. I want to make it perfect for you guys and that takes time (at least with me lmao). I'm constantly trying to push the boundaries of my sound and experiment with genres, thus it has been taking me a while to deliver something cohesive. I had a full album this past Summer '17, but I trashed half of it. The other half ended up on LNR_[02] (4reel, Tomoyo, Juicyfruit, remember_) because I felt like I could do better. There's also the pressure of following up on 'Otaku', as well as the potential 'Sophomore Slump' pitfall. Hopefully I don't allow my creative ambition to crush me, but I believe with time I will be able to find balance between expectations and my own DESIRE. For now, this album is called 'DESPAIR' because that's what I've felt since 'Otaku' dropped. A lot has happened. My grandfather died and I ruined the first good thing I've had since my ex.

So I apologize for the delay and the lack of new songs, I just wanted to compile the loosies I had on Soundcloud and put them up on Spotify since people were asking and stuff. I've also been in a creative rut, stuck between a rock and a hard place with my own expectations, progression, and my DESIRE to make the best/most interesting music I possibly can. Not wanting to be stuck in the box that is the lofi genre, this EP is just a reflection of these feelings and I will speak more of it in the letter I will include in DESIRE. After that, I actually plan to make a lofi follow up to 'Venus' entitled 'Saturn EP' because I want to. And I think that is really important with avoiding being boxed in musically - making the music that YOU want to make. I was talking to my friend Scott who runs lo-fidelity in NZ and I mentioned to him how I want to make a Jazz album, a video game soundtrack/concept album, and an orchestral album. I don't expect all of my fans to f*** with all of my work, but hopefully they can recognize the vision across all of it and know that it is the music that I truly want to make. It's just going to take some time for me to master 90s Acid House lmao. Anyway, I think that's how artists can stay unique and that's what I've always tried to do.
