The clandescent Federico Sutera and Laurent Schmidhäusler form the insidious duo Rotkeller, known for their excursions into ponderous and maundering interpretations of electronic music. Their last release on Thrènes was an experimental and perplexing delight that perpetuated their virtuosity. The Swiss pair has returned to release a pressing technoid sound on the Thrènes imprint entitled Anti-matter.

The project kicks off the track ‚Antimatter‘. It has distinctive and emphatic patterned per-cussions and a wandering pad that wistfully saunders in and out. There are clever uses of claps, crisp hats and insisted clicks. The track lays the foundation of the sound to ex-pect from the EP with comprehensive yet wonderous beats.

‚DipK‘ follows the opening track, which has a bit more body and sways. It was made for the waning hours of a club when it might be get-ting bright outside, but the crowd doesn‘t want to leave. It has a captivating synth that runs throughout and an infectious bassline; the sound allows the mind to roam free but rhythmic drums, hits and snares make the body move.

Midway through is the Kangding Ray remix of ‚Tetra4‘. The French-born but Berlin-based artist is known for his mastery in blurring the lines between techno and experimental, and this track is a testament to his talents. The cut has a classic underground club feel as it simply keeps up the tempo. The oscillating synth is compounded with spacy fluttering stabs with a kick drum that adds resounding velocity to the track.

The penultimate track, ‚Skpp Skpp‘, features B.Skupin. It has an enchanting heavy breath prominent throughout the cut, accompanied by ethereal choir chants and a deep

The first Prodigal Son release features a newcomer from France, known by the name EXAL. He is a resident dj for Blocaus in Paris often held at La Machine Du Moulin Rouge. His first ever record is sure to make an impact with two excellent originals already proven to do damage to dance floors with good results and they are backed up by two stunning remixers on the flip side.  Inigo Kennedy and Héctor Oaks both put their own uniquely epic spin on Exals original tracks. The vinyl has been mastered by Matt Colton at Alchemy Studios here in London and the artwork story begins with our guy Sariel Keslasi from Tel Aviv.

Ellen Allien, Anthony Linell and Tensal remix tracks from Amotik’s Vistār LP on his self-titled imprint.

After moving to Berlin in 2014, Amotik has been steadily building a base in the city that significantly inspired him. Having developed a unique style of atmospheric techno with a relentless raw undertone, his consistency as both a DJ and producer has seen him perform at some of the most exciting clubs and festivals around the globe. Amotik delivered his first full-length double vinyl LP on his Amotik label earlier in 2019 which will be accompanied by a debut live tour to end the year. The album features 10 tracks with elements of ambient, broken beats, textured soundscapes but has its foundations firmly rooted in techno and invites remixes from heavyweights Ellen Alien, Anthony Linell and Tensal.

Presiding over Stockholm's Northern Electronics label with Varg, Anthony Linell aka Adbullah Rashim dispenses a deep, hypnotic approach which can be heard on releases on Northern Electronics, Semantica Records and Abdulla Rashim Records. Anthony’s remix of ‘Chautis’ deploys his meditative production style to great effect through shimmering low end, glistening synths and alleviating elements.

Spanish producer Tensal who has over fifty releases on labels such as Polegroup, Modularz, Mord, Falling Ethics, Arcing Seas, Kynant, Float, Ownlife, Soma, Attic, Propaganda and his own Tensal Records imprint, gears his remix of ‘Paintis’ towards a modern, raw sounding number through crunchy oscillations, thudding kick drums and obscure yet brain-tickling atmospheres.

Berlin’s Ellen Allien has been at the forefront of the techno scene for many years adopting a style that sees her blend and weave between mesmerising Berlin techno, acid, freak jack slammers and classics which can be heard on her BPitch Control imprint, as well as her remix of ‘Tetails’ which adopts sharp rhythms, entrancing leads, dramatic yet euphoric leads filled with nostalgia to round off this remix package with majestic style.

Prodigal Son Records was established in 2015, after working on other labels, most importantly, it was something Chris Stanford could really call his own, its sound, its concept, its feeling. Growing up reading comics as a kid, the artwork had to be illustrative. The artwork is brought to life by talented sketchers and illustrators, but the brief is always Chris’s vision telling the story of a  modern, roughneck Prodigal Son with imagery on a dystopian setting. There is a level of quality control with the music, along with the community of artists slowly building over time, hence the slow output in the early years. Unless it’s somebody Chris has met in person or somebody he can envision being a part of the family and the identity of the label, there's only a small chance of on boarding. This may seem unjust to some, but loyalty and relationships built over years is important for developing the labels journey. It is more than likely you will see acts returning to release on the imprint time and time again. Chris finds it fascinating to see how the producers and remixers he’s worked with build on their own sounds and identities, developing as time moves on.

The labels style is much based on the influences Chris carries into his own style of djing techno. Elements of dark, moody, rawness with rowdy drums and menacing percussion that keeps the flow going strong. Also, he believes music needs to tell some sort of story otherwise what's the point?! Too dull & deep, sends you to sleep... Too relentless becomes hopeless... but a balanced variety is possible, whilst staying true to your sound. It’s important to remember the sound you are trying to project will come naturally if you stick to releasing & playing what you want to hear, as much as it is about making the dance floor move. By no means should we digest what practically is the same, yet again in disguise. 

2020 will see Prodigal Son reach its 5 year milestone having featured producers & remixers such as... Sept, Kas:st, Stephanie Sykes, Jokasti & Nek, Exal, Sosak, Insolate & Arnaud Le Texier, Joe Farr, Inland, Ansome, Inigo Kennedy, A. Morgan, Kaylah, Edit Select, Hector Oaks, He/aT, Nendza, Escape To Mars, Dyad, Setoac Mass, Codex Empire. The trip feels like it's still only getting started and has a whole lot to come….
