Roebin de Freitas has been prolific as of late and more is yet to come. The second EP of Perfidious for instance, is a three tracker full of (un)conventional techno music.

Based on Steven Pinker's 'The Better Angels of Our Nature', the EP opens shop with an offbeat kick followed by an eerie and intricate synth pad called 'Circle of Sympathy'. Quirky and snappy percussion adds that splash of energy making this track excellent for some high brow dance floor action.

'Zero-sum Game' is full of game and will have you reaching for that gain. The droned out bass line and fast arpeggiated bells set the pace relentlessly. No way back!

Third and final track 'Parent-offspring conflict' is the hidden treasure of this EP. A broody bass is at the core when the clap slaps your right in the face. Waves and splashes of synth pads come crashing in more and more for that outer body experience to come through. It will have you yearning for more...

As we turn to the next episode. Eric arranged to meet his father in a cold abandoned warehouse on an industrial estate on the other side of town, a building he knew only too well from just a couple years back. He’d been hanging out with his squatter mates and this is one of a few places they’d frequent. He’d been up to no good well that’s what his father used to say anyway. “I knew you’d come to nothing, you little piece of shit” his father said. “I gave everything to you and this is how you treat me, you ungrateful backstabbing waste of space”, as he sat there cable tied to an old wooden chair, rocking on its uneven legs, now knowing he had been lured under false pretences. “But did you really give me everything?”, Eric said as he sat there staring at canvas sack that covered his father’s disturbed and angered face, whilst he held his gun casually on his lap contemplating his next move…

The soundtrack is the first contribution by Stephanie Sykes of the Midlands, UK. With a history behind her connection to Prodigal Son, she steps up with two of her most impactful pieces to date, “Walking Alone” & “Glimmer Of Existence”. A mind full of inspiration, of sounds taken in from recent ventures and a wealth of experience from her residencies. Having had a very special 2016 this is only the beginning for Stephanie and a sampler for what’s to come. Her tracks are remixed on the flipside of the record, the brutality of South Londoner, Ansome, with his version of “Walking Alone”. Then the melodies of “Glimmer Of Existence” takes a philharmonic reworking from one of Glasgow’s finest Edit Select.

While we watched the current events unfold in the USA, we have been feeling pretty helpless, we wanted to speak sooner but we felt we wanted to take action rather than adding more words. We are sickened by the way individuals have lost their lives over the years at the hand of disgusting police brutality, most recently with George Floyd. But this all stems from systematic racism that generations have suffered. Some of us can’t really begin to know the true extent of how this has impacted millions of human beings over hundreds of years and while we know this may not amount to a huge donation... We believe that now is the time for change, we want to make a move towards this, even if it simply helps raise more awareness amongst our own circles.

Prodigal Son artists & friends have worked together over the past few days to make a compilation of which all proceeds will be donated to NAACP.org who are leading the fight for change in the United States, we know this is a global issue and will like to support everywhere but we have to focus on one movement at a time. We would like to thank Bandcamp for highlighting this as an important organisation to direct the funding to, as they recently announced plans to make considerable donations.

Please purchase if you can, pay at least £10 for 13 tracks or pay more if you feel you can. We will donate all the proceeds to the NAACP fight against racial based discrimination and their work to bring reform to the criminal justice system in the USA.

Chris Stanford is the boss of Prodigal Son Records, which hosts a wealth of talent as displayed in its discography. It continues to grow as the label embarks on 5 years in the making. He’s known as strong supporter of new artists & new music, always seaking fresh tracks that push the sound forward but also hold the traditional values of underground dance music. His sound builds on emotion, with hints of nostalgia and always an element of moodiness, which he gets from his UK rave scene roots. 

He has quite the reputation for his stripes he earned in a ton of London venues over the years. He has held lengthy notable residencies, a veteran on its scene of which has seen him perform in many European cities. 

Chris was of the original founding EarToGround crew with early collaborations with close friend Dax J, he has released music in the past but his passion has always been to release and play others music, hence his involvement within a handful of labels since 2008. But its behind decks is where he finds himself true to his trade and to himself as no nonsense DJ through and through...

Number 60 is curated by polish powerhouse Sept, who, next to being a resident at the Warsaw institution JASNA 1, also has excited ravers with dance inducing releases on esteemed labels such as Voxnox or Prodigal Son the past year. The Warsaw-based music producer curates a sound he describes as eclectic, hypnotic and powerful and that has led him to play a plethora of renonwn clubs around Europe and beyond. Sept presents a driving mix of peak-time techno that gives you a taste of what his performances are like.

BCCO Mix Series 059: Sept

Prodigal Son Records was established in 2015, after working on other labels, most importantly, it was something Chris Stanford could really call his own, its sound, its concept, its feeling. Growing up reading comics as a kid, the artwork had to be illustrative. The artwork is brought to life by talented sketchers and illustrators, but the brief is always Chris’s vision telling the story of a  modern, roughneck Prodigal Son with imagery on a dystopian setting. There is a level of quality control with the music, along with the community of artists slowly building over time, hence the slow output in the early years. Unless it’s somebody Chris has met in person or somebody he can envision being a part of the family and the identity of the label, there's only a small chance of on boarding. This may seem unjust to some, but loyalty and relationships built over years is important for developing the labels journey. It is more than likely you will see acts returning to release on the imprint time and time again. Chris finds it fascinating to see how the producers and remixers he’s worked with build on their own sounds and identities, developing as time moves on.

The labels style is much based on the influences Chris carries into his own style of djing techno. Elements of dark, moody, rawness with rowdy drums and menacing percussion that keeps the flow going strong. Also, he believes music needs to tell some sort of story otherwise what's the point?! Too dull & deep, sends you to sleep... Too relentless becomes hopeless... but a balanced variety is possible, whilst staying true to your sound. It’s important to remember the sound you are trying to project will come naturally if you stick to releasing & playing what you want to hear, as much as it is about making the dance floor move. By no means should we digest what practically is the same, yet again in disguise. 

2020 will see Prodigal Son reach its 5 year milestone having featured producers & remixers such as... Sept, Kas:st, Stephanie Sykes, Jokasti & Nek, Exal, Sosak, Insolate & Arnaud Le Texier, Joe Farr, Inland, Ansome, Inigo Kennedy, A. Morgan, Kaylah, Edit Select, Hector Oaks, He/aT, Nendza, Escape To Mars, Dyad, Setoac Mass, Codex Empire. The trip feels like it's still only getting started and has a whole lot to come….
