Release Info: 
A rising star from South America, Ric Niels has lit up the progressive house scene over the past three years. Now joining the Proportion roster, the Argentinean artist releases his “Pirate / Psyncopath” EP.

Renowned for his evocative and emotive sound, Ric Niels has found himself courted by some of the finest modern imprints through his fusing of analogue and digital synths to create a blend of deep, organic and tech sounds. As such, his music has found a welcome home on such celebrated imprints as The Soundgarden, Particles, Plaisirs Sonores and Mango Alley. Almost a half-century of production credits can thus be found for the latter in both solo and collaborative guises with Ric seeing work with Dowden, The Wash and Mango himself grace the Russian imprint.

Supported by an elite DJ cast list that includes the likes of Nick Warren, Guy J, Hernan Cattaneo and Henry Saiz, it is not difficult to see why the Argentinean from Chaco Province has continued to be such a sought-after producer within the progressive house fraternity. Opening his Proportion account with a scintillating musical diptych, “Pirate” immediately grabs listener attention with its pounding beat and deep bassline groove. Light percussive touches pervade the dense sonic layers as trademark melodic prowess reveals itself through a dynamic dancefloor backdrop. Cascading synth lines and delay-infused arpeggios ripple across the soundstage, coming to the fore at a striped back breakdown before a growling bass riff heralds an exciting final movement full of potency and drive.

Pulling the listener in with a shaker-fuelled percussive line and chest-thumping kick, “Psyncopath” provides the hallmark rhythmic poise for which Ric Niels has become renowned for. Full of sinister menace, a creeping bassline pattern and textured pads swim dizzyingly across the stereo spectrum in the early stages before a filtered arpeggio wends its way onto the main stage with poise and verve. Infused with white-noise at a mid-point chock full of sonic layers and captivating melodic characters, the final movement drives effortlessly forward as the hypnotic groove once again finds it mark.

Lighting up the stage on Proportion, Ric Niels delivers another moment of mesmerising magic with his “Pirate / Psyncopath” EP.

PREMIERE: Ric Niels - Psyncopath (Original Mix) [Proportion]

Finishing 2023 on another stratospheric high, GMJ & Matter return to their ever-rising imprint with a twin-track EP of rare quality as they end the year with “Stellaris / Idtritah”. 

Over a year that saw a collection of releases cement their reputation in the rarefied atmosphere of the Progressive House movement’s leading lights, GMJ & Matter have seen music featured on Cid Inc.’s Replug, Hernan Cattaneo’s Sudbeat Music and Alex O’Rion’s newly minted Solis Records throughout 2023. Add to that a set of performances across their native Australia, Europe, and culminating in a spell-binding sold-out label showcase at Amsterdam’s Akhnaton as ADE hit the city for the dance industry’s annual shindig, and it’s not difficult to understand why the Melbourne-based duo are such hot properties. 

As label bosses, the duo have overseen the meteoric rise of their Meanwhile imprint since its debut in early 2020. A regular fixture in the Beatport Progressive House Top 10 charts, Meanwhile has been the purveyor of outstanding underground dance music with a roster of artists including Jamie Stevens, Alex O’Rion and Simos Tagias. Now returning to their label with another pair of original offerings, “Stellaris” is a gorgeous free-flowing offering that immediately hits its stride with powerful beat, percussive intrigue and hallmark hi-hat urgency. Full of depth and delight, a sub-bassline hypnotises before an immaculately cadenced synth motif is woven into the rhythmic foundation with the precision of a master seamstress. A flowing and atmospheric new melody adds depth at the breakdown and continues into the head-shaking third movement accompanied by an array of white-noise risers. The result is another instant GMJ & Matter classic. 

Continuing the deep, driving narrative of its partner track, “Idtritah” mesmerises with an immaculately constructed groove of rolling top-line hats and percussion, while a staccato bassline adds further gravitas. A cascading combination of melodies trip across each other with ease as a warm blanket of melodic flow and smooth delays envelops the listener, culminating a beautifully textured and ethereal mid-point break. A new plucked phrasing enters the fray in the second half to magical effect with the addition of subtle vocal textures and exquisitely placed effects creating another superb track that sits perfectly within the GMJ & Matter canon. 

Ending the year as they began, GMJ & Matter shoot for the stars once more with “Stellaris / Idtritah”.

Continuing to add new talent to their roster, Tash's Movement Recordings welcomes Maze 28 and TEELCO to the label for their debut EP. Hailing from Albania, Mario Zefi aka Maze 28 has emerged as one of his country's most hotly tipped progressive house artists. In just three short years the Durres resident has earned support from genre tastemakers Hernan Cattaneo and Nick Warren, while his melodic creations have found a home on Clubsonica, iNU, Juicebox Music, RKP and Mango Alley, the latter of which operates as his primary home. Meanwhile, fellow countryman TEELCO has been a fixture of the progressive house underground for the better part of a decade. Noted for his deep melodic sound, the Tirana resident first emerged on the strength of tracks for Balkan Connection's BC2 and Soundteller Records, making him a name to watch going forward. The next decade would see TEELCO further hone his craft and notch standout releases for Deep Down Music, Mango Alley, RKP and Univack, while earning the praise of genre tastemakers Hernan Cattaneo and Mariano Mellino. Having been paired previously for Mango Alley, Maze 28 and TEELCO now combine their extensive forces once again, with their much anticipated Movement Recordings debut 'Sense'. 

Maze 28 and TEELCO showcase their ever growing creative synergy on the lead selection 'Sense'. Aimed squarely at the dancefloor, its rhythmic energies and catchy synths are immediately infectious, perfectly anchored by a warm key changing groove for maximum emotional response. The break furthers the track's evolution with a spacious approach, letting the lead breathe against a backdrop of warm textural drifts and poignant bass swells, before an intense build sparks a huge finale to send people home with a smile. 

'Seekers' continues the EP's peaktime appeal with a similarly energetic approach. Here, Maze 28 and TEELCO add a great sense of space with electric lines taking centre stage atop charged beats and full rolling basslines. Nostalgic in nature and mood, its supreme flow not only makes for a perfect mid-set style track but also furthers the emotive lean of the release. 

The release concludes with the lush sounds of 'Kintsugi'. With a backbone of tough kick drums and chunky rhythms, comes an air of shapeshifting atmospheres and subtle but heartfelt melodies, resulting in the ultimate goosebump worthy vibe. Staying true to its title, the main break delights with a backbone of breakbeat percussion setting the stage for an oriental-themed melody to round out the EP on a feel good note.

A rising Brazilian star with a growing portfolio of high-quality releases to his name, Tonaco makes his Meanwhile full EP debut with the 3-track "Disurbia / Avalon / Crackdown". Hailing from the central Brazilian state of Toncantins, famed for its cerrado, rivers and soybean plantations, Tonaco has planted his own roots within the underground dance scene with a growing list of releases to his name. From a 2019 debut on Transensations with "Vollus", a further quarter century of production credits have followed with work appearing on such leading labels as onedotsixtwo, Mango Alley and Moonlight. After first appearing on July 2022's "Meanwhile Excursions" compilation with "Sententrional", Tonaco now returns to Meanwhile with a first full solo EP. Opener "Disurbia" is a growling, rumbling affair that immediately revels in an unsettling atmosphere of effects and growing synth swells. Building easily within a sonic framework of hypnotic rhythmic energy, a smooth arpeggio brings a moment of light melodic touch at the breakdown before the huge low-end dynamism creates and a seething, head-shaking monster reminiscent of early 2000s progressive breaks. A high-energy backdrop fizzes across "Avalon" with its rapid-fire hi-hats and metronomic snare while a syncopated bassline adds groove aplenty. Entering its mid-section, an enticing and free-flowing middle eastern sounding melody lilts across the mid-range, full of mysticism and visions of desert landscapes. Hitting its stride once more in the third movement, a growling spoken vocal and driving rhythm create a mesmerising sequence towards the outro. The final track sees "Crackdown" continue the percussive narrative of earlier tracks as a hypnotising combination of tom fills and carefully placed melodic rhythms combine to create a soundscape full of vitality and brio. Building at the half-way stage with a wonderful bassline pattern, a light and airy melody then fills the sonic spectrum into a gloriously evocative breakdown of echoing keys and spatial effects, before dropping back into the smooth rolling groove of toms, hats and driving beat. Making a further name for himself with a trio of assured and immaculately produced tracks, Tonaco excels with "Disurbia / Avalon / Crackdown".

‘Fugue State of Mind’ is a masterpiece of subtle, mindful power. Sonics and FX dance with abandon on the skippy percussive backbone of this track as the signature motifs rise and fall along with the tension and release.
‘Rain of Drums’ hacks back to the glory days of prog with low end sweeps, bleepy rhythmic arps and a satisfyingly groovy bass line. 
‘Rewired’ picks up the pace with a plucked bass taking the lead ably assisted by strong sound design and some well chosen samples. 
Rounding out the pack is ‘Celestial Being’. Tribal rhythms and FX lead the way making space for echoed arps a huge bowel shaking bassline and oodles of feel good factor.
