In 2015, the four members of Prep came together to cut deep grooves that mine contemporary R&B and electronica while hearkening back to the soft, sheer sound of the late ’70s and early ‘80s. The love for that style united vocalist-lyricist Tom Havelock, keyboardist Llywelyn Ap Myrddin, drummer Guillaume Jambel, and producer Dan Radclyffe. Prep is pop music that feels tip-of-the-tongue familiar even though you’ve never heard it before. They have a massive following in some Asian countries, especially Indonesia, Thailand and The Philippines, collaborating with local stars Live and in recording. Their self titled debut album arrived in 2020, followed by “The Programme” (produced by Renaud Letang) from 2024, featuring the original version of “Call It”, their cooperation with legend Eddie Chacon (of Charles & Eddie – “Would I Lie To You” fame). So how did the collab come together? We asked the Preps: “The first time we heard Eddie Chacon’s “Holy Hell” we fell in love with it instantly and thought “we have to do something with this guy”. A year later we were going to be in L.A. for a few days, so we had a word with our label, they got in touch, and next thing we knew there was a session in the diary.
That one day with Eddie at the Stones Throw studios in Pasadena was one of the best we’ve ever had, where everything just happened very naturally: we met, we got on, had tacos, Eddie had a melody idea, we put a beat down, chords down, the equipment worked, the stars aligned… We wrote “Call It” in an afternoon. It’s “Georgy Porgy”, it’s “Always There”, but really it’s neither. It’s us and Eddie Chacon, channeling a lot of good feeling through a roomful of drum boxes, synths - and an electric sitar.”
We here at TSTD headquarter are huge fans of the original track already, but we quickly had the idea to have L.A.’s Turbotito remix the track… and a dream come true.

Jisco Dazz - Slap That Bass (Stephen Richards Remix)

Get Down Edits founder Darren 'Dazz' Dalton dons his solo Jisco Dazz alias for a fine outing on his own imprint. He's in sample-rich original production mode on 'Slap That Bass', adding Wurtlitzer style organ licks, jaunty pianos, dreamy chords and eyes-closed female vocal samples to a weighty bassline and smooth deep house bass. The accompanying remix package is pleasingly solid too. Dalton's Get Down Edits project delivers a more low-slung, funk-fuelled house revision that makes more of the killer bassline and vocal samples, before Noden slaps down (sorry) a rolling dub disco-meets-deep house rework and Stephen Richards gives the track a sunnier and more soulful garage-house feel.

Moi Je, en realité, is the Lyon-based L. De Lassablière. He is finally back with a new EP – ’Reviens’ – that’s more disco and funk than ever. He and a select bunch of close collaborators have crafted this new release with the act of dancing firmly in their sights. The essence of the Moi Je project is still there, with its French electronic influences blended with the warmth of Italian summer sunburns. It’s a signature, poetic sound that has evolved over years of experimentation and practice, now here in glorious high-fidelity. There’s a playfulness too, with lyrics and music combining in fresh new ways. His biggest success so far is his beautiful, warm, disco-ified remix of “On You” from 2016 for fellow Frenchman Kazy Lambist, which earned him a gold disc! The track hasn’t left our USB DJ stick since its release, and is guaranteed to get every sophisticated dance floor moving. (released on Delicieuse Musique Records)
