The arguments against Dune are numerous, but the one Mike White of The Projection Booth podcast puts forth in his commentary track might be the most compelling one for. White has an affinity for Herbert’s books and Lynch’s movie and brings an educated eye to each frame with background from the books, the production, the various drafts of the screenplay, etc. It’s film scholasticism with a healthy dose of appreciation.

White loves Dune and wants you to love Dune too. And I must admit, his appreciation is intoxicating. There are many aspects of Dune that work: The pustules pocking the Baron’s face, for instance, are positively repulsive, and MacLachlan’s performance as Paul somewhat paves the way for FBI Special Agent Dale Cooper in its earnestness and calculation.

Also known as The Streetwalker, The Margin, and sometimes even as Emmanuel 77, La Marge film stars Joe Dallesandro as Sigismond, a loving husband who leaves his wife and child to head to Paris. While there he learns of the sudden, unexpected death of his aforementioned family and spends a few days living in fringes of society, spending most of his time with Diana, played by Sylvia Kristel, a prostitute. The 1976 film is one of several adaptations of André Pieyre de Mandiargues by director Walerian Borowczyk.

After a brief hiatus, The Projection Booth returns with a discussion of John Woo's A Better Tomorrow (1986). The film is seen as a hallmark of the “heroic bloodshed” subgenre of action films, doing for gunplay what a generation of Hong Kong films had done with swords.

The film tells the tale of Ho (Ti Lung), a criminal whose younger brother, Kit (Leslie Cheung), is a police officer. He's betrayed by a fellow gangster (Waise Lee) and sent up the river. When he returns to Hong Kong he wants to stay on the right side of the law which is more difficult than it should be.

The film speaks to loyalty, brotherhood, and put Chow Yun-Fat on the map as a bankable action star.

Cinema Junkie's Beth Accomando and Mike wax fondly about the glory days of HK Cinema, twin brothers, strange sequels, and the true colors of a hero.

A Better Tomorrow (1986)

Co-written by Chuck Vincent and Rick Marx, Roommates (1981) tells the tale of a trio of women trying to make their way in New York City.  The film stars Samantha Fox as Billie, a former prostitute trying to make it in the straight world, Kelly Nichols as Sherry, a model from California with a drug problem, and Veronika Hart, as Joan, an aspiring actress from the Midwest.  

Heather Drain and Ashley West join Mike to discuss this harrowing adult film.  Interviews include writer Rick Marx, cinematographer Larry Revene, and star Jane Hamilton (AKA Veronika Hart).

Roommates (1981)

On this epic episode of The Projection Booth, we remember the road warrior, the man we called Mad Max. In the roar of an engine, he lost everything and became a shell of a man, a burnt-out desolate man, a man haunted by the demons of his past, a man who wandered out into the wasteland. And it was here, in this blighted place, that he learned to live again. 

Ben Buckingham and Mike Thompson join Mike White to discuss the ever-shifting landscape of George Miller’s Mad Max series from its audacious beginning as a bikie exploitation / revenge Mad Max (1979) to the post-apocalyptic Western Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior (1981) to the troublesome Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome (1985) and concluding (?) with the spectacular Mad Max: Fury Road (2015).

Based loosely on the writings of Jack London and Leon Ray Livingston, Robert Aldrich's Emperor of the North Pole (1973) tells the story of two hobos in the American Northwest during the depression -- A Number One (Lee Marvin) and Cigaret (Keith Carradine).  The two have a very uneasy relationship with one another and a completely antagonistic relationship with Shack (Ernest Borgnine), a railwayman who doesn’t want any freeloaders on his train.

Sci Fi December continues with a look at the 1986 film from Georgiy Daneliya, Kin Dza Dza.  It’s the story of two men who are transported to the planet Pluke where they have to navigate the barren landscape and strange cultures of the people there.  

Jennifer Handorf and Dan Martin join Mike to unpack the rituals and anthropological implications of Pluke as well as dicuss the 2013 animated remake, Ku! Kin-Dza-Dza.

Our appreciation of 1969 continues with our second look at an adaptation of Edowaga Rampo’s work, Blind Beast.  Directed by Yasuzo Masumura, the film stars Mako Midori as Aki Shima, a model, and Eiji Funakoshi as Michio, a blind sculptor who becomes obsessed with her.  He and his mother kidnap Aki and keep her in his warehouse studio where the two become engaged in a game of cat and mouse as he tries to create a new form of art that only the blind can appreciate.

We’re discussing the 1985 film from Wolfgang Petersen, Enemy Mine. Based on a novella by Barry Longyear, the film stars Dennis Quaid as Davidge and Lou Gossett Jr. as Jerry. The two are of different races -- one human, one drac -- who find themselves stranded on a hostile world.
