box (@boxofbox) is one of the dearest friends we’ve made in this dance music thing. A seemingly eternal well of kindness and intention, the legend of boxofbox is slowly spreading far and wide. To know them is to love them and to hear them play is a gift (always). When I first heard box would be playing @hot-mass for the first time for Pittsburgh’s fantastic Transit party, I almost cried…. before immediately began making a plan to get to Pittsburgh cause I wouldn’t miss it for the world. 

The reality of that night far outweighed my high expectations. Making their way through the world’s longest playlist, box sloshed an enthusiastic crowd of friends and strangers, human dancers and prancing pups alike through their expansive musical soup that touched on so many much loved musical traditions and diverse dancefloor sounds that we hold so dear. I won’t spoil the ending but I’ll never forget hearing those last few tracks and then emerging from Hot Mass to discover the outside world blanketed in a still, untouched fresh layer of snow that had neatly fallen while we were sweating it out inside.

Hot Mass might be my favorite dancefloor. The friendships that have flowed from/through there are some of my most cherished, and this set in many ways was a love letter to all those folks.

It was my first time playing on the system (if you don't count a mini set of trance bangers to annoy Aaron Clark during a Humanaut party setup). I came in with flexible open format intentions – I have seen the full gamut of DJs play there for some of the most up-for-anything crowds you could hope for, and I wanted to meet that dynamism full-on.

There are a couple "ambient" washes, which I love doing when I can get away with it. The tiger snoring specifically is something I've wanted to try inspired by Plaslaiko closing Panorama Bar, where mid-set he spontaneously blended into a pitched down loop tool that made it sound like pulsating/purring. He let it sit for at least a full minute while he ducked down to re-up some vitamins before knocking back into something breaky. Truly a floor-melting moment for me; hopefully I melted a few heads in return.

I threw on a block of tearful tracks for the landing. Spring's "No Time (for crying)" in particular was a must play for me; I listened to it almost every day during covid lockdown, and I wanted to forever link it to one of the spaces (as Not Mass) that brought me consistent solace during that hellish era. The last three tracks were inspired by seeing the faces of loved ones left on the dancefloor and wanting to give them something for a good happy cry.
