Since its inception in 2018, Maztek’s 0101 Music has gone from strength to strength, catering for a vast array of styles of drum and bass ranging from neurofunk to halftime. Having already springboarded the careers of emerging talents like nabepro and Bad District, the Dutch label’s Divison imprint now returns with its first compilation album, one of its most ambitious outings to date. Weighing in at a whopping seventeen tracks, Sonic Codes Vol. 1 features a combination of longstanding signees and deserving newcomers, all hand-picked for inclusion by Maztek himself to make for a gargantuan LP.
Close followers of the label’s developments will no doubt be pleased to see residents like Binary and Alerstorm contributing exclusive cuts to the new project; in fact, it even features the pair’s first ever collaboration, a barbed, mechanical number entitled “Siege”. Neurofunk aficionados will recognise a number of familiar faces making their label debuts, too: Germany’s Kaiza, whose recent contributions to Bad Taste, Citrus and Red Light have marked him out as one to watch, appears twice on the compilation, teaming up with Vertex and Fearend on the syncopated heater “Papercut” and banding together with his C4C-approved crew Instinkt for the stuttering stepper “Serpens”. Meanwhile, seasoned Belgian badman Taos showcases his gritty synth work on “Ungreyed Tones”, and the fast-rising Belarusian trio Psynchro – whose recent output includes appearances on RAM, Eatbrain and Cyberfunk – turn in “Composite”, a cinematic number punctuated by garbled basslines and murmuring subs.
True to form, Maztek has also unearthed a whole host of little-known production wizards, sourced from right across the globe. The enigmatic Loded offers up a jittering, jagged belter entitled “Break Out”, while Italy’s Eclict teams up with fellow newcomer FMD&B for the neuro juggernaut “Turbolence” and London tag team Edison & SMP excel with the dark, percussive creeper “Ganglands”. With all this and more on offer over the course of the LP, there’s plenty to get stuck into…

What had once been but a small village had changed, coating itself in the metallic materials of a new age born of the prosperity that was wrought by its forebears, those who had bound demons in stone so many years ago. The elements of fire and brimstone with which such creatures once threatened the village now lay bound themselves, claimed and wielded as tools that had wrought the stairsteps of progress from the ruins of the city’s troubled past. As progress had waxed however, time waned, and few left still remembered the obelisk which lay hidden at the heart of their city, encased within a monument to victory over the realms’ more worldly foes. Within however, those foes of old had slumbered, keeping sharp the memories of their magical imprisonment. Outside, time had passed, and now arrived back to where it had once been. Thus with the waking of the demons is stone, the time of DIVERGENCE did once again begin.

It began subtly, as the influence of the demons seeped out from the ancient obelisk, transforming the visages of the metallic heroes who were their former jailors into subtly more monstrous forms. From the obelisks dark and rotted core seeped a sinister demonic poison, and ichor that worked its way into dark places both familiar and new. With it came the demons, who slithered out of their forgotten prison and found refuge amidst the smoke and flame now welcomed by those who had forbade them long before. As their power and number grew, their essence enveloped the city, immersing it in a sea of acrid darkness that choked living beings and the light of the sun with equal tenacity. Caught within this abyssal miasma, the minds of the city’s inhabitants corroded as their bodies mutated into horrendous forms, a slow, grueling process that spared those affected not a single horror. As day and night ceased to pass within the haze that strangled the city, the demons emerged from their dark places, assuming their de facto rulership over the city which was now carved in their image. Thus it was again that the world of the living was changed, therein by the darkness from which DIVERGENCE came.
EATBRAIN continues their DIVERGENCE compilation series with DIVERGENCE III, bringing together a monstrous roster including a surprise last ever appearance by the legendary FOREIGN BEGGARS produced by KILLBREAK, and label veterans TELEKINESIS, AGRESSOR BUNX, MIZO, THE CLAMPS, DISPHONIA, IHR, L 33, NAIS, COD3X, LIVEON, KUTLO and novel additions DISASZT, SHADOW SECT, SCREAMARTS, CHASER. After experiencing a breakthrough year in 2020 which saw them reach dizzying heights in the drum and bass scene with releases on RAM Records, Viper Recordings and Liquicity, Australian duo V O E are back on home turf with the new two-tracker “Sirens” / “The Darkness”, incoming via local label ProtoCode. Based in Adelaide and made up of two accomplished singer-producers, Tevlo and CARZi, V O E have carved a niche for themselves with their signature brand of vocal-led D&B, demonstrating a penchant for striking an expert balance between spellbinding cinematics and merciless bassweight. Typically saving their darkest and heaviest offerings for ProtoCode – as evidenced by their label debut, 2020’s “Where You Belong”, and their recent Alpha Cuts compilation contribution, a remix of Dead Zodiac’s “The Fall” – the pair have opted to showcase the two extremes of their sound on this latest drop. Centred around a hushed vocal from CARZi, “Sirens” means business from its introductory notes. Introduced with sprawling ambiances and tense, acid-esque modulated synth plucks, it suddenly breaks out into explosive, neuroleaning crescendos, pierced by unrelentingly jagged basslines and strident drums. With new twists around every corner including bellowing breaks and an exhilarating halftime switch-up, this aural juggernaut is one of the duo’s most ambitious productions yet. In stark contrast from its predecessor, the gritty but tangibly liquid-inspired roller “The Darkness” opens with gentle piano melodies and a sublime topline – once again provided by CARZi and showcasing her impressive vocal range – before bringing serrated synths and bubbling arpeggios into the mix. The result is a more commercial, yet simultaneously hard-hitting number, an apt reminder of the pair’s versatility right across the drum and bass spectrum. “Sirens” / “The Darkness” lands exclusively via Beatport on 19th March 2021, hitting other stores and streaming services a fortnight later on 2nd April.
