Andre Sobota - Fragments

An artist blessed with prodigious crossover talent, Andre Sobota has been a mainstay of the underground dance community's highest echelons since his early work for Proton in 2009. Delivering "Fragments" in February 2016, the Brazilian's work continues to grace the imprint, now further emboldened by a pair of exquisite remixes from Japan and Italy.

Originally from Ibaraki on the Pacific coast, Japanese superstar, Shingo Nakamura, has become a leading force in the progressive house and trance scene. Supported by industry leaders including Max Graham, Gareth Emery and Above and Beyond, Nakamura's renown is global in scope. A regular on the Silk Music imprint, his "Sapporo" album shot to number one in the Beatport Progressive House charts, and, with over a century of productions credits for the label, his influence cannot be overstated. A second album for Otographic combined with further work for the likes of Anjuanadeep and Armada has seen Nakamura hit the headlines with striking regularity.

A regular on both the Particles and Proton Music imprints, an array of remixes has graced the latter as Soundprank, Poison Pro and Derek Howell have all borne witness to a distinctive sound. Now reprising a remix of "One Day Out" in 2010, Shingo Nakamura revisits Andre Sobota with typically dynamic and melodic flair. A huge bouncing bass line provides a strong anchor while cadenced percussion prowess works in harmonious synchronicity with pulsating textured pads. A breakdown of emotive majesty retains the themes of Sobota's original as Nakamura's additional production supplies a leading edge.

Considerable talents in their own right, Italians Danny Lloyd and Andrea Cassino have been at the vanguard of the modern dance scene. Lloyd, a cutting edge figure with a host of production credits for the likes of Lowbit and BCSA, was a highlight of the 2015 Particles calendar with the original "Espejismo" EP highlighting burgeoning talent with its characteristic sound. Andrea Cassino's history is no less storied, cutting an iconic figure alongside Alex Laben from 2001 as Cassino and Laben. A solo artist from 2009, Lowbit, Armada and Soundteller have provided strong foundations for the Cassino sound, supported by the DJ elite in Hernan Cattaneo, Sasha and Richie Hawtin.

As Nocturna, 2014's four-track "Big Bang" EP exploded onto the underground scene via Cattaneo's Sudbeat, a remix of Dousk for Proton Music was a 2015 highpoint. Furthermore, November's "Nocturna – Compiled and Mixed", for the imprint, provided a successful celebration of the duo's work simultaneously demonstrating their impressive DJ skills. Now returning to Proton for a second remix, the Nocturna rework of "Fragments" is a delightful jaunt through intricate percussive rhythms and strong beat. Cleverly reworking the underlying melodic theme of Sobota's work, the additional production work in intermittent sparkling riff and deep, rich bass line has ensured a successful return to the label.

A pair of intelligent new interpretations sees Andre Sobota's "Fragments" unified by Shingo Nakamura and Nocturna.

Blugazer's "Ethereal Concepts," one of our favorites from this year's "Silk Royal Showcase 04" compilation, finally receives a full single release on our parent label, including powerfully emotive interpretations by Shingo Nakamura and Piramex. Based in NYC, Blugazer has generated strong buzz in the international trance & progressive community over the last few years, on account of his intricate, visionary productions. His original version is centered on a gentle groove, while a variety of relaxing and lush melodies are equally entrancing. The instrumental themes are quite memorable, yet the most breathtaking effects are provided by an unnamed female vocalist, whose ethereal voice offers a deep catharsis to the listener.

Veteran star Shingo Nakamura, fresh off a wonderful collaboration with Jody Wisternoff and James Grant on the recent "Anjunadeep 06" release, offers a deliciously deep take in the spirit of the original version. Soothing pads and a buoyant rhythm provide the listener with a floating-on-air sensation, while Shingo's signature chords offer uplifting melodic vibes. In the main break, Shingo's gorgeous piano lines, which beautifully coalesce with the vocal stabs, are a welcome addition to the soundscape.

Rising Russian talent Piramex, who recently won our "Both" remix contest, provides a peak-hour rendering, fueled by a ferocious bassline. As the song crescendoes toward the climax, vocal effects and pad layers are added, creating an aura of suspense. In the main break, a reworked vocal sequence soars above an anthemic bassline progression, while a variety of side melodies fill out the soundscape. The thunderous drop to follow is awe-inspiring.

Rising Anjunadeep star Lane 8 announced the release of his debut album in style recently, with the brilliant new single ‘Ghost feat. Patrick Baker’. On remix duties are a diverse trio of talented producers; techno innovator Audion, Aus Music prodigy Bwana and blogger's favourite Luvian.

After collaborating with Lane 8 on a track on the upcoming album, Matthew Dear took to his notorious Audion guise to remix ‘Ghost’, following remixes for legendary acts like Leftfield, Four Tet, Dubfire and Seth Troxler. Completely twisting the mood of the original, cutting the vocal over a frenetic groove he delivers a gnarly late-night techno cut.

Bwana has marked himself out as one to watch with his excellent EPs on Will Saul’s Aus Music, and his epic take on ‘Ghost’ is another winner, playing off the subtle melodies of the original with a huge bass hook, and Patrick Baker’s evocative lyrics.

UK based Luvian has been bubbling away for a while, with his early tracks picking up millions of plays on YouTube and Soundcloud. He takes his remix away from the club, instead opting for a gorgeous poolside version, stripping back almost entirely to sparse percussion, sensual melodic textures and warped vocals.

Born in the coastal town of Sevastapol, Alex Golovanov has had a huge impact on the modern progressive house scene under his Mango production guise, now culminating in the full-length album, "Citylanes Airplanes".

Since his first work for Morphosis in 2007, the "Kisses" EP gave an insight into the beautiful melodic refrains that would become a hallmark of the 'Mango sound' and subsequently lead to over 200 Beatport production credits. Since then, a close and fruitful relationship with Silk Digital has led to a plethora of releases that originally formed the inspiration for the label's very existence. Alex's work as AandR head for a 5-year period confirmed his close relationship with the Silk Family and the recent "Mango 01" compilation pays further tribute to his work.

The Mango sound has also become an integral component of the Proton catalogue and 2012's "Chasing Birds" EP gave Alex an opportunity to blend his talents with a love of Japanese rock music and the hugely successful "Starboard" rock group. With goliaths, Armada, Ministry of Sound and VANDIT also taking notice of his skilled productions, Mango has been as successful as he has prolific.

Turning his attention to his own Mango Alleys label, with its own unique brand of classic progressive house and a portfolio of high-profile artists and high-class output, Alex Golovanov has reached what he deems a "milestone not only for me but also for Mango Alleys". After a significant rebranding exercise, Alex is proud to announce its first release in the shape of his very own full-length album. The zenith of six years of skill, life experience and technical know-how, "Citylanes Airplanes" is the final act of an artist reaching the pinnacle of a career in music production.

Taking his characteristic sound as an ignition point, listeners can expect nothing less than a joyous explosion of classic chord-based progressive house, downtempo and ambient electronica. The common thread? Mango's unique and innovative sound design, immaculate sense of rhythm and unrivalled compositional expertise. Drawing influence from all aspects of his life and the cultural aspects of art and photography, bustling cosmopolitan city centres and towering skyscrapers, juxtaposed against charcoal grey skylines, form inspiration in parallel to crystal blue stratospheres dotted with scudding clouds across mountain dominated horizons. Mango is able to conjure up such images through a series of sublime musical vignettes where listeners find themselves on an unrushed journey across an ever-evolving landscape of musical styles, reflected in gradually changing vistas of vibrantly coloured suburbia, sepia tinged golden sunsets, rolling hills and sweeping lines of fauna. All these images help provide an audio-visual analogy for the music found within "Citylanes Airplanes"; a feedback loop resulting in a kaleidoscopic synaesthesia from the surrounding stereo soundstage.

Mango's final act is a tribute beyond the traditional confines of 'electronic dance music'. "Citylanes Airplanes" is a work unbounded by constraints, reflecting the world around us in all its colourful uniqueness and distilled into the very essence that has become the Mango trademark sound.

I worked really hard today to bring you guys a remix of my two favourite groups on the day of the release of the original. I don't know whose business decision it was to release the two simultaneously but it certainly did my head in.
