The third chapter in On Board Music’s The Meaning Of Time compilation series takes a different approach. The label engaged its community with an open call for tracks, and then tasked its core, established artists with remixes of each. The resulting, 22-track offering is a sublime snapshot of modern ambient and deep techno, showcasing the label’s richly talented roster and an exciting next generation. As with the previous compilations, all proceeds will be donated to Sea Watch and the important work they do for the migrant crisis in the Mediterranean Sea.

Previously during the first national lockdown Third Son wrote, mixed and mastered his debut album in 20 days. Watch a short Stamp The Wax documentary on the work here. Following on from this remarkable achievement, Joseph has been going back to his early music collections that informed and inspired his work over many years, making his own re-imagined interpretations of them to form a new body of work called Retrograde.
Released in June, the covers span a broad church, from electronic, to rock, to minimal piano and ambient. The LP will be accompanied by a short run of tapes, the medium mostly used by the artist in formative years. The album was produced from his home studio in London.
“Over the last year I’ve been listening to key music from artists I’ve always gone back to over the years. The songs and pieces that still grab me after 100 listens. I slowly made my own interpretations, which kept me occupied during the drudgery of lockdown. We all need a project. I ended up with something for all settings, the sitting on the floor in the lounge listen, the kitchen disco listen and even an optimistic club listen.” Third Son Over his short but intensely packed musical history Third Son has been meticulously honing his craft and sound and has received accolades and spins from a huge cross section of the industry to include Maya Jane Coles, Michael Mayer, Anja Schneider, Jackmaster, Jasper James, Kolsch, Dark Sky, Terr, Lena Willikens, Moscoman, DJ Boring, Sasha and many more. As well as this he has seen praise from household publications such as DJ Mag, Mixmag, Beatport, Future Music among others. Following releases on Dusky's 17 Steps and Matthew Herbert's Accidental Jnr, 2021 is a bumper year with the artist releasing on Shall Not Fade, Unknown To the Unknown sub label Soft Computing, Disco Halal and Permanent Vacation. This plethora of names is testament to Joseph's ability to continually stay ahead of the curve and keep the listener guessing.

An artist who has been an integral part of the rich and colourful tapestry of underground dance music culture for over three decades, James Monro continues to find himself at the cutting edge of a scene he helped establish. Now, as Monro celebrates his long involvement in dance music, he draws together a collection of tracks for Proton Music, "In the Ether".

Born in the UK but firmly settled in South America, Brazilian based James Monro has always been at the vanguard of underground dance movement. A classically trained musician from an early age and inspired by icons of the electric music scene, Moroder, Eno and Jarre, Monro's love of disco, psychedelia and hip hop saw him translate his passion into energy-fuelled performances behind the decks across his home country and onto the beaches of Goa in the early 1990s.

As co-owner of the Flying Rhino imprint in 1995, Monro added another string to an already impressive bow, before joining forces with long-term friend, co-producer and label partner Grant Collins, to create the 4DigitalAudio label. Striking out as a producer under a variety of production alter-egos, the Midnight Ramblers outfit (alongside Flying Rhino co-owner, George Baker) saw an appearance on John Digweed's iconic "Structures Two" album, with the heavily supported "Scarab", charted by no lesser lights than Babicz, Cattaneo and Warren, while the "Ambientworkx7" track featured on the latter's "Renaissance: Masters Series" compilation. A plethora of high-profile releases have continued to find success on blue-chip imprints that include, Iboga, Bedrock and Flow Records as James Monro continues to stay hugely relevant in the current, fluid music market. A regular on the Particles and Proton Music imprints, 2013's "Fonik" and 2015's "Nectar" EPs, showcased James Monro's extraordinary original work as high-profile remixes from Kastis Torrau and Lonya continued the success. 

Now, James Monro returns to Proton with a truly astonishing body of work in the shape of the full-length album, "In the Ether". Developed and written in his Encantada hometown, the fulmination of a decade-long work is now represented by a striking twelve-track offering that spans Monro's musical career. A work that may never have come to fruition due to an extraordinarily difficult set of circumstances in recovering corrupted files after the loss of a computer and back-up on a boat-sinking incident in Brazil, make the album a real triumph of human endeavour and musical craft.

Full of the trademark melodic flair that is consistent with a classically trained musician, the floating, airy sounds of "Profusion" and "Viridian" are juxtaposed against the pulsating bass dominance of "Alchemical", "Galactix" and "Rise", creating a sense of urgency and drive. The intricate rhythmic patterns and meticulously programmed percussive cadence of "The Pink Button" and "Rapture" with their clave/wood block sound, plus modulated synth lines and buffer overridden effects.

Creating a delicious dance-floor groove, "Voyager" weaves a sublime path through an intelligently constructed chord motif whose delay adds elegantly to the sonic tapestry, while "Modular" once again, finds a pumping sustained bass line, added to a series spine-tingling melodies and growling pitched vocals. Similarly, "Frolic Acid" hits hard with its huge running bass line, textured white-noise pads and acid-tinged lead line that evolves into shimmering melodic phrasing. Closing with the hi-hat and shaker fuelled, "Impendium", a chorus of percussive effects lead the charge against ethereal synth lines that flow in unencumbered hypnotic fashion.

With a body of work that is certain to stand the test of time, James Monro has fully transformed his music "In the Ether".

In early 2017, Michael A debuted on Proton Music with the outstanding "Bright Hope". Full of his trademark craft and vision, Particles now revisits the EP with remixes from two North American artists.

Adopting the contracted, Dezza, for his scintillating work, Canadian born, Derek Silvester, is an artist with an exceptional production pedigree. Able to call upon Above and Beyond, Tiesto and Paul Van Dyk as fans of his music, Dezza has found his tracks allied to a host of blue-chip imprints that include Colorize, Black Hole and Silk Music. Over four-hundred production credits to his name with a plethora along the Silk road, original EPs that include 2014's "Meekix/Derry" and 2016's "Brit", continue to place Dezza firmly on the industry map and the heads-up-display on the globe's top DJs. 

A debut remix for Proton Music in November 2010, reworking Mango and Kasuza's iconic "Asphalt Lines", is now complemented with a standout remix of "Seven". Intelligently taking the groove foundations central to Michael A's original, Dezza's skill is to rework them into a sonically charged offering that builds with spine-tingling momentum and trademark melodic skill. As elegant as it is effortless in execution, the resultant work is a track that generates a new direction based on the themes resonant in the original with a cornucopia of additional production material, rich harmonies and rhythmic flair.

Chicago born but now firmly ensconced in his adopted Greek homeland, Savvas Karabinos, has been involved in the dance music industry since the early 1990s. A renowned DJ and the host of numerous open-air parties, Savvas' work with Yosebu in 2000, under the name Acropod, witnessed a full-length album for Klik Records. With over a double century of production credits to his name since 2010, Savvas has continued to find his work valued by the finest modern underground imprints. Thus, Ready Mix Records, Motek Music and Submarine Vibes continue to extol the virtues of the prolific producer. Indeed, it is for the latter that the deep vibes of "Monsoon" can be heard alongside a remix from Jelly For The Babies for "Haunting Melodies".

Reworking the title track from Michael A's EP in a debut for Particles, the Savvas remix of "Bright Hope" is a deliciously deep offering that revels in rich percussive flow as shakers and wood blocks provide a rhythmic backdrop for evolving melodies to develop unencumbered by weight of expectation. Reminiscent of Jean-Michel Jarre with its cascading delayed motifs and soaring chord progressions, Savvas turns in an innovative new remix that intelligently reworks Michael A's components into a new and dynamic piece.
